Arkrand, the Ironbound City

Brief intro and general characteristics:

The ruined city of Arkrand was once a massive metropolis, but now remains desolate and broken.

The city fills out a circular valley, surrounded by tall mountains on all sides.

A substantial part of the city is underground, but the map would only need to cover the surface.

The city was ravaged by earthquakes and has been (mostly) abandoned for 800 years, so the general
landscape is characterized by cracked earth and sparse, but unchecked vegetation.

The forging of iron was a large part of Arkrands culture, so the material features prominently in building
construction, alongside stone. Presently, this means many buildings are now covered in rust.

Sections of the city:

The Old City: Dominates the Southern part of the valley, now a mess of ruined buildings of stone and
rusted iron. This is where the city was first erected after the valley was settled.

The Seat of the Gods: Dominates the central part of the valley. A large number of temples to various
deities sit atop pillars of stone, connected by thin bridges (Inspired by this piece of art:

gonna make it on the map.

The Ashen Hills: Dominate the Eastern part of the valley. A sparsely populated, rocky hillside used as a
construction area, filled mainly with now-ruined forges and mines. Stained grey by soot, smoke and ash
over the years, very little vegetation.

The Swordfields: Dominate the Western part of the valley. Previously an agricultural area with fields for
a variety of crops, then repurposed as military grounds. The fields now hold ruined forts and
encampments, but little else.

The Shades: Narrow north of the Seat of the Gods, connecting the Ashen Hills and the Swordfields. Built
when the city was expanded, smaller buildings with more wood used in construction, in the past home
to the common folk and less reputable elements of Arkrand.

The Forest of Everlasting Winter: Dominates the Northern part of the valley, a thick forest permanently
covered in snow and frost.
Landmarks:
The Great Gates: Massive iron city gates at the Southern end of the valley, now permanently shut by
rocks, rust and roots.

The Crater Forge: The first forge of Arkrand, a flat, domed building built into a meteorite crater. Located
in the Southern part of the Old City.

Old Royal Palace: The original residence of Arkrands royalty, located in the Western part of the Old
City. Now just a crumbled ruin of iron and stone.

Cobalt Lake: A small, cobalt blue lake where the Old City and the Seat of the Gods meet.

Royal Crypt: Opulent stone crypt worked into the mountainside on the Western end of the Swordfields.

Heavensreach Spire: A massively tall spiralling white tower in the very center of the city, in the middle
of the Seat of the Gods (imagine a slender Tower of Babel ). The top section of the tower is a large white
sphere.

The Pit: A large circular pit in the Shades, holding stairs that lead to Arkrands undercity.

Rimehold: A large fortress, also built into the mountainside at the Northern edge of the valley, past the
Forest of Everlasting Winter.

Fort Ios: The only newly built fortification in the Sword Fields, constructed from stone and wood where
the Sword Fields, the Forest of Everlasting Winter and the Shades meet.

Cinderhall: A large, square stone building in the middle of the Ashen Hills, constantly spewing smoke.
