INTRODUCCIN
Lubrication is the most effective means of controlling wear and reducing friction.
Thus tribology, which is the science and technology of friction lubrication and wear,
is of considerable importance in material and energy conservation. As our
technological civilization expands, material and energy conservation is becoming
increasingly important. Wear is a major cause of material wastage, so any
reduction of wear can effect considerable savings.
Progress in wear control and prevention can be made only after a better
understanding of the mechanisms by which it occurs and of the controlling factors
has been acquired. The economic implications of wear cause concern in industry,
as a reasonable life is required of mechanical equipment to cover capital and
maintenance costs.

adhesin, abrasin, erosin y fatiga.

Future trends may be to experiment less but to measure and interpret more.
Research may be justified only if it can provide information to allow industry to
solve its immediate problems or can produce significant advances in technological
progress. It thus appears that increased effort is required to disseminate
knowledge in a readily understood form to effect greater energy, materials and
manpower savings at a minimum cost. It is hoped that the subsequent chapters go
some way towards doing this. Lubricants generally do not wear out but become
contaminated and so, from the point of view of the environment and conservation,
reclamation, which is presently only practiced of economical.
In the present and foreseeable future world economic situation, material and
energy conservation is becoming increasingly important. As wear is a major cause
of material wastage, any reduction in wear can effect considerable savings in
material and the energy necessary for their production.
