Place the Blame for the Juarez Violence
Where it squarely belongs – the

In his powerful essay, “When
Will the Violence End in Juarez,” Rafael
Navarro Barron, points out the many in-
consistencies that exist in Ciudad Juarez,
Mexico between the poor and the privi-
leged few. His article which was pub-
lished in the August 20, 2010 issue of
Spotlight EP News, Barron pulls no
punches in placing the blame for the vio-
lence that permeates the city squarely in
the hands of those most responsible –
politicians and political leaders who
have, for decades, ignored the cries of
the poor, while they enriched themselves
without mercy, and without accounting
for their greed and avarice.
Barron calls what’s happening
today, “The Third Revolution,” or “La
Tercera Revolucion.” Keeping in mind
that the major revolutions in Mexico
have come in 100-year spans, this revo-
lution came about because of the city’s
inability or unwillingness to provide for
people, those who most needed assis-
tance from the government. “Juarez is
becoming a city of sadness, where its
restaurants are empty, where two univer-
sities have been shut down because there
are no students to teach and because no-
body believes politicians anymore.” Not
when they are part and parcel of the
problem. There is no protection, because
military personnel and law enforcement
officials are in cahoots with the drug
traffickers, the extortionists, and the
killers. In Juarez, there is lawlessness in
general.
The gist of the problem, how-
ever, isn’t that the cartels are battling for
power, or that they are fighting over lu-
crative drug routes. No, the problem
stems from the fact that Mexico has long
ignored its social problems, a catastro-
phe that didn’t happen overnight. As
someone who has lived in El Paso for

over 60 years, I can attest to the fact that
the rich become very rich, and the poor
become very poor. This Third Revolu-
tion is being perpetrated, primarily, by
the very young, by the very poor; by
young people who have experienced ex-
treme poverty, without any hope of ever
climbing out of their misery. These
young people have had to face the harsh
realities, that there is no hope for them.
There is no higher education for them,
that the enormous differences between
rich and poor in Mexico have acceler-
ated the situation, the problem.
The Third Revolution is built on
anger, an anger that has been building
for many years. People feel helpless,
having seen their political leaders enrich
themselves, while they get only the
crumbs that are left over. It’s no secret
that anyone elected to office will become
wealthy, will soon own land, which he
steals from the poor. These people, and
they know who they are, have abused
their positions, knowing that there is no
recourse for the populace, but, perhaps
they are wrong. The United States is
wrong also. In providing money to these
governments for battling the drug car-
tels, the only thing the U.S. is doing is
providing more fodder for the cartels,
more money so that they continue their
nefarious activities. The U.S. is not help-
ing Mexico end its social problems, I
wonder why?
The Merida Initiative is a case in
point. Instead of the U.S. sending money
to Mexico to fight the drug wars, direct
that money to where the poor can attain
a higher education, to where the poor
can elect leaders that will think of them
first, to where the poor can have clean
drinking water, to where the poor can
have an infrastructure that is not crum-
bling, where they can live with pride,
with dignity, and with better access to
governmental services. It does no good
to send money to fight the cartels, be-
cause that money will only serve to line
someone’s pockets. Does the U.S. actu-
ally believe that Mexico is using money
to better the lives and conditions of the
poor?
To Navarro, it’s no secret why
the drug traffickers are well armed, why
they murder, and why they allow them-
selves to be murdered. `”When the ma-
jority of them were children, nobody
cared about them or for them. Now, they
are getting even with society and with
the government for what they lacked in
their early years.” It might also be a
Mexican tradition, as the song says: “Si
me han de matar manana, que me maten
de una vez (If I’m going to be murdered,
might as well murder me now rather
than later), or words to that effect.
Navarro, a newspaper editor in Mexico,
who has now moved to El Paso, knows
from where he speaks. Does he have a
solution?
“If the government is to win this war,
this Revolution,” writes Navarro, “it
must re-invest its money to help the
poor, the desperate, the unprotected. It’s
urgent that Mexico do this. Get rid of the
monopolies that exist in oil, gas, electric-
ity – agencies that have encumbered the
people; modify programs to create an
equality that is attainable. Mexico must
regulate gas prices, help people save
money, provide clean drinking water for
every citizen, and provide services with
the poor in mind; provide an equitable
education for every child, so that igno-
rance is eliminated from the nation’s fu-
ture. Let this Third Revolution be one
that will benefit the greater good, and
not just the hateful few. To do nothing in
2010 will be devastating in 2011.”

Raindrops –
How Fast do
they Fall?
This time of year is our rainy season. Our monsoon
season reminds me of a question that I received from a reader
months ago. This person was wondering about raindrops and
how fast these water droplets fall from the sky. The reader concluded that the drops seemed
to hit (or fall) with great force. I thought it was an interesting question.

The speed of a falling raindrop depends on the size and weight of the raindrop and how fast
it falls; the heavier, the faster. At sea level, a large raindrop (about the size of a housefly)
falls at the rate of 20 miles per hour. Drizzle drops, (about the size of a grain of salt) fall at
4.5 mph.

A raindrop starts falling and then picks up speed because of gravity. Simultaneously, the
drag of the surrounding air slows the drops fall. The two forces balance when the air resist-
ance just equals the weight of the raindrop.

The air resistance depends on the shape of the raindrop. Most drops are fairly round, the
small ones spherical, larger ones flattened on the bottom by the airflow. At high speeds, the
air resistance increases with the square of the velocity.

Now when we have strong winds that accompany some storms the rain drops can reach the
speed of the wind. It’s not fun being hit by a raindrop going that fast as it hits you in the
face. This will also occur when air is rushing to the surface out of a strong thunderstorm
(raindrops speed to earth increases).
By the way, a falling human races to the ground at a velocity of about 125 miles per hour.

and car insurance, and his
rent because we wanted his
focus to be on his studies. We
also paid his tuition.
Jason has a part-
time job. Now that he has de-
cided to leave school, our
view is that he should find
another job and assume these
expenses.
My husband and I
disagree about who should
pay for any future education
Jason wants. If he goes back
to school, his tuition will be
paid for, says Dad. I think we
would be enabling him if he
thought we were always

Go get your sun-
screen. I'll wait. Bring it back
and start reading the ingredi-
ents. All sunscreens are not
created equal. Some are laden
with unsafe and suspect ingre-
dients and should be banished
from your shelves, right along
with soda pop and anything
with artificial sweeteners.
Here are the red flags you
want to avoid, according to
several reputable sources, in-
cluding the Envi-
ronmental
Working Group's
latest survey of
more than 500
beach and sport
sunscreens and
sunblocks. For
more details, including the
best and worst sunscreens by
brand, check out
www.ewg.org:
1. Retinyl palmitate is another
name for vitamin A. It's a very
good nutrient in your sweet
potatoes and spinach, but vita-
min A is not a welcome ingre-
dient in your sunscreen, says
EWG. Why? Because there is
growing data (including the
FDA's own research) that
links vitamin A to the acceler-
ated growth of skin tumors
and lesions. That's right. The
sunscreen you use to prevent
skin cancer may be raising
your risk of getting a skin
cancer. The EWG reports that
41 percent of all sunscreens
have vitamin A (retinyl palmi-
tate) on their ingredients list.
2. Avoid the chemical called
oxybenzone. It's a synthetic
estrogen that penetrates your
skin and contaminates your
body. Some studies have
linked oxybenzone to health
risks, including endocrine dis-
ruption, cell damage and can-
cer. Cancer? Yep. Doctors
have seen a scary rise in
melanoma cases in people
who regularly use sunscreen,
and oxybenzone is one of sev-
eral suspect ingredients.
3. Avoid sunscreen sprays and
powders, sunscreens with
added insect repellent, and
sunscreens with an SPF above
50. The sprays and powders
pollute the air with little parti-
cles that may or may not be
safe to breathe. (Use cream
sunscreens instead.) Insect re-
pellent is also a sus-
pect ingredient.
There's no proof that
the 50-to-100 SPF
sunscreens offer
more protection, and
they may induce you
to stay out in the sun
longer than you should, rais-
ing your risk of skin damage
and skin cancer.
When you choose a new sun-
screen, look for one with zinc,
titanium dioxide, avobenzone
or Mexoryl SX. It should
offer broad-spectrum protec-
tion, be water resistant and
have an SPF factor of 30-plus.
The fewer chemical ingredi-
ents the better.
The best sunscreen, the EWG
concludes, is a hat and a shirt.
I agree. I also urge you to do
regular self-exams, looking
for suspicious moles or
growths, and just to be sure,
see a dermatologist at least
once a year.
Want To Be Healthier? Hap-
pier? Go Outdoors!
Too little sun can be even
more harmful to you than too
much sun. Why? Because
your body needs sunlight to
create vitamin D, and vitamin
D deficiency — hugely on the
rise since people started using
so much sunscreen — can
cause weak bones, depression,
heart attacks and a number of
cancers, including skin can-
cer.
A simple blood test and a nu-
trition-wise doctor will help
you determine whether your
levels of vitamin D are suffi-
cient. And plan for daily ex-
posure to the sun — without
sunscreen — for 10 minutes
to 20 minutes a day, depend-
ing on your skin sensitivity.
Here are four more good rea-
sons to go outside and play,
borrowed from a recent Har-
vard Health Letter, and you
know how smart those guys
are:
1. YOU'LL GET MORE
EXERCISE. Being outside
means you're not inside
watching TV, playing video
games or snacking. Outside is
where the exercise is. Take a
walk. Ride a bike. Get your
body in motion.
2. YOU'LL BE HAPPIER.
Natural sunlight is a natural
mood booster, and so is exer-
cise. When you combine the
two, you'll relax and cheer up
in many subtle and wonderful
ways.
3. YOUR CONCENTRA-
TION WILL IMPROVE.
Kids with attention deficit dis-
orders seem to focus better
after being outdoors. Chances
are, so will you. To make your
outdoor time even more
soothing to the brain, combine
it with some deep breathing
exercises.
4. YOU MAY HEAL
FASTER. There is research to
show that people recovering
from spinal surgery experi-
enced less pain and less stress
and took fewer pain meds
when they were exposed to
natural light.
Don't hesitate a moment
longer. Open the door, go out-
side, and play. Start today!

put up with mediocre shoot-

entertaining psychopaths
would do. For the sequel,
"Kane and Lynch: Dog
Days," IO Interactive man-
aged to remove nearly every-
thing appealing while still
retaining what drove gamers
nuts in the original.
Witty banter between the two
has been replaced with mind-
less anger, leaving little more
than a couple of boring,
sadistic douchebags. I really
have no motivation to play
through a game when I hate
the main characters. In addi-
tion, the story line seems like
more of a side mission than a
real story, and the entire ex-
perience is over in five hours.

It's a good thing Mojo Nixon
was the opening act for long-
time pal Kinky Friedman's
recent concert at the Belly
Up Tavern in San Diego, in-
stead of just dropping by to
hang out and take in the
show.
"There was this time in Ohio
where Kinky said: 'Mojo,
come up on stage and play a
few (solo) songs,'" Nixon re-
called. "And then I
could
hear
him
and
his
band,
laugh-
ing, as
they left
the dress-
ing room
and
started to
get in the
van."
Friedman
chortled with
delight.
"That's the old Tom Sawyer
(fence-painting) gambit!" he
said.
The Mark Twain reference is
apt, and not just because
Friedman — a veteran
singer-songwriter-turned-
best-selling-novelist — has
been hailed as his genera-
tion's answer to Twain and
Will Rogers.
Rather, it's because Friedman
and Nixon have enjoyed a
Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn rela-
tionship that has produced
enough fertile material to
fuel a good book. One would
expect nothing less from
these two veteran cultural
provocateurs, whose first at-
tempt at artistic collaboration
was a memorable failure.
"In the 1980s, I hired Kinky
to write the screenplay to a
movie I was going to do,
called 'Citizen Mojo,'" Nixon
said. "The result was 30
pages of gibberish. I think
most of the budget went up
our noses."
Their now long-dormant pen-
chant for very expensive
Kleenex notwithstanding,
Nixon and Friedman are
close friends despite their de-
cidedly different political
perspectives. "I'm an anar-
chist Libertarian," said
Nixon, 52, whose career as a
rabble-rousing musical
satirist now takes a back seat
to radio broadcasting.
"Mojo
is much to the left of
me," said Friedman, 65, who
in the 1960s was a Civil
Rights champion and a mem-
ber of Students for a Demo-
cratic Society. He is likely
one of the few people whose
friends include Bill Clinton,
George W. Bush and Willie
Nelson.
While Friedman speaks in
well-modulated tones, Nixon
says nearly everything in an
animated cackle. He hosts
one daily and two weekly
shows on Sirius Satellite
Radio — the roots-music-
celebrating "Outlaw County,"
the NASCAR-celebrating
"Manifold Destiny" and an
outspoken political talk show
called "Lying (Expletives)"
— all of which Nixon
records at his home studio in
Coronado, Calif.
References to Jesus are a re-
curring theme in the work of
Nixon and Friedman, who
spoke together in a recent
joint phone interview, the
former from his Coronado
home, the latter from his
rural Texas ranch.

"I'm still lecturing Christians
about the death penalty," he

Golf is such a gentleman’s sport that even the slightest
controversy seems nuclear. Thus a big hubbub ensued
when reporter Jim Gray argued with Ryder Cup captain
Cory Pavin. The highly respected reporter claimed Pavin
told him he would pick Tiger as a captain’s choice if he
didn’t qualify for this year’s Ryder Cup team. Pavin later
said he never said it. Gray confronted Pavin in a shout-
out after a news conference. So who is telling the truth?
My bet is Gray is the truthful one. His career is based
on his credibility and personal relationships with the ath-
letes, and you don’t challenge the Ryder Cup captain
unless he deserves it. The chances are that Pavin, new
to being interviewed about anything more controversial
than how many putts he took on No. 4, told Gray he’d
pick Tiger, then changed his story to what he should
have said in the first place, i.e., something politically

It’s fun to let the big dog eat, as they say when
you’re about to bomb one with your driver. But there is
no rule in golf that says you must use your driver off
the tee on every par-4 and par-5. Still I see a lot of
high-handicappers who do this, regardless of the fact
that the driver can be one of the hardest clubs in your
bag to hit.

Why? Because it’s the longest club, and that

encourages you to swing too much around, causing the
clubhead to be trapped behind you. Once this happens
you don’t have time to square the face at impact and the
ball slices.

Loft is the angle at which the clubface looks at the

sky, and the less loft a clubface has, the more side spin
it puts on the ball. For most players that spells slice.

Situation, personalities determine if

hard is “too hard”
“Is there such a
thing as race
drivers racing
each other too
hard?”
A: It’s all a matter of past history and racing eti-
quette. The issue has been on the front burner in re-
cent weeks because of the dust-up between Ryan
Newman and Joey Logano at Michigan International
Speedway. Logano crashed into Newman, who was try-
ing to secure a berth in the Chase and couldn’t really
afford the lost points because of
the spin. Some said the two were
racing each other too hard at
that point.
But isn’t racing hard what
drivers get paid to do?
It depends on the situation and
the drivers involved, as several
other veterans explained last
week.
“It depends on the drivers,” Jeff Burton said, adding
that the situation is a factor too. “I will tell you, and
I’ve made the comment before, that people just don’t
realize how hard it is racing for 15th or 18th, and the
reason why is everybody is running the same speed.
“It’s just so hard to give any space because if you
give it, you can never get it back. But honestly it de-
pends on who you’re racing and your relationship with
that guy. Some guys race you harder than others for
18th, and with some guys, depending on just the per-
sonalities or relationships between those two drivers,
sometimes it’s harder and sometimes it’s not as hard.”
Carl Edwards said he’s raced with Newman and
Logano and had a range of experiences.
“I’ve had good races with both of them and bad races
with both of them, just like everyone else, and that’s
their deal,” he said. “There are certain guys that drive
differently than others, but I think, for me personally, I
would call them deals, but I have understandings with
each individual driver.
“I race Mark Martin differently than I might race
someone else because Mark races me a certain way, so
you just can’t have this overall thing. You’ve got to deal
with each individual the way they treat you, and I
think that’s the right way to do things.
“I think that leads to some confusion, like when peo-
ple don’t understand how you can let a certain guy get
away with something and another
guy will not stand for anything
that he tries to do. That generally,
I think, works the best. That’s the
fairest way if that makes sense.”
Edwards also said he saw some
ulterior motives in some drivers’
comments about the Logano-New-
man incident.
“I think it’s pretty weak of guys
to comment on other situations
and just criticize because of who
they’re friends with and who they’ve had past inci-
dents with,” he said. “That’s what I see going on. It’s
kind of like a little game, and it’s kind of funny actu-
ally to watch.”

Vickers gives medical update
Brian Vickers, out of the No. 83
Toyota because of blood clots dis-
covered earlier this season, made
an appearance in the media cen-
ter at Bristol Motor Speedway on
Saturday to give a medical update
and restate his intentions to re-
turn to the circuit at the begin-
ning of next season.
Vickers told a group of reporters that tests deter-
mined he had a hole in his heart, which has been sur-
gically repaired, and that his condition has been
diagnosed as May-Thurner Syndrome.
He said he planned to be off blood-thinning medica-
tion in plenty of time to be in the car for the Daytona
500.
