1 Thunder rumbling in the distance awoke Reginald Eppes at five in the morning.
He checked the weather forecast on his phone. A cluster of storms was coming, but
it sounded like his small town, Coaling, in Central Alabama, would not be hit too
hard. However, Reginald, a seasoned firefighter, knew better than to underestimate
the power of these huge electrical storms. 5
2 Know where the torches are? he asked his wife, Danielle. By the time he had
located them, the thunder was booming all around them. The instant he switched on
the torch, the house lights went off. A second later, the kitchen windows blew out.
Reginald and Danielle ran to protect their boys Ray, eight, James, six and Joel,
3 four still sleeping in their bedroom. Get up, get up, Ray! Reginald shouted, 10
waving his torch. The sleepy boy roused himself and teetered on the edge of his
upper bunk of his bed. Reginald held out his arms and called to his son to jump. He
was too late.
The roof tore away and the walls of the bedroom dissolved around them. Ray
4 was sucked up into a roaring swirl of debris. Ive lost him, Reginald thought. In 15
desperation, he threw himself over James, lying on the lower bunk, to shield him.
Scanning the room, he managed to locate a blanket and pull it over them. He was
just in time as the next moment, glass, wood and plaster hit them like shrapnel.
Reginald heard his wife praying as she held on to Joel. Then something huge, heavy
he thinks the washing machine slammed into him. He wound his arms tightly 20
around James, still grasping the torch in one hand.
After an agonising long period, the wind began to die down. Reginald estimates
5 it to be anywhere between two and five minutes, but says it felt like forever. He
found himself standing in the ruins of his home. Darkness lay all about him. Then
he thought he saw a shape moving towards him. It was Ray guided home by the 25
beam of his fathers torch.
At the hospital later, Ray described what had happened to him. I floated out
6 when the wall started moving. I think I was above the trees. I was scared. My mother
and father were gone. Pieces of glass went across my back and something hit my
neck really hard. 30
Ray had been snatched up into the funnel of a fierce tornado that had just as
7 capriciously set him gently back on the ground. Unbelievably, Ray sustained only
bumps and gashes. Of all his family, Reginald was hurt most severely. The heavy
object that crashed into Reginald as he shielded James fractured his ribs and deflated
his lungs. However, he and his family were alive. 35

Others in the local area were not so lucky. The F4-force tornado with winds of
8 up to 300 km/h, killed 65 people and injured more than 1000. Reginald and Danielle
Eppes are convinced that Ray survived his ride in the maelstrom only by some
miracle. I really believe, Reginald says, that someone was watching over us.
