Analysis

The second condition of equilibrium, Torque, is the central topic of Experiment 204. It is defined
as the capability of force to change the rotational motion of a certain particle and the measure of the force
applied on the object to enable rotation. In terms of the axis of rotation or pivot point, it is specific most
of the time. Denoted by r, the distance between the point of pivot and point where the application of force
is defines the moment arm. This denotes the direct proportionality of the torque with the applied force as
well as its dependency on the distance perpendicular of the force applied to the point of pivot. This
experiment strives to analyze the system in equilibrium and its application. The effect of the forces acting
on the system as well as their radial distance from the axis to the torque would also be evident in this
experiment.

The initial experiment is to experimentally determine the weight of the pans. In order to
determine the weights, we need to balance the 1 and 2 . To achieve such, th summation of
torqus ( ) shall equate to zero. Placing (1 + ) narr and 2 farther from the rotation
of axis can balance the system.

The succeeding experiment is about obtaining equilibrium by using force. In this experiment, the
spring is attached to the beam in an angle. The angle of the spring balance affects the torque of the system
since the formula of torque is the cross product of force and the distance of the object from the rotation of
axis.

The last experiment is to experimentally determine the beam weight. In order to determine its
weight, exposure of the weight of the gravitational force, which affects the beam, is a must. Thus, we
need to support the beam to be transferred in a different rotation of axis where the second hole is exposed.

One of the probable sources of error in this kind of experiment is carelessness. Since the making
and measuring of the system in equilibrium is sensitive, a little movement can change the distance and
therefore, forcing one to balance the object again. As mentioned above, the measurement from the pivot
point plays a huge role and inaccurate measurement of it can greatly affect the experiment. Furthermore,
to further improve the accuracy of the results, it is suggested to use a digital spring balance.
