The History of Journalism

What is News?
- Intangible; concrete and abstract.
- We get it from anything that brings out our senses or emotions. Happens when an event, action or
circumstance has an impact on people or their way of life.
- Its a COMMODITY - sold to and bought by people.
- It helps us make sense of our world by developing our understandings, learning and intuition.
- The importance of news for a person depends on who each person is.

How Did News Develop?

How Did Newspaper End Up Being the Way It is Now?

Benjamin Franklin contributed to developing Newspaper to be the way it is now:
1. Improved editorial content, giving readers something to stimulate their appetites and make them want to
buy the next edition
2. Came up with the idea of paid newspaper advertising - made newspapers profitable business enterprises.
3. Implemented a broad, non-judgmental, non-interventionist policy of editorial impartiality.

How are the Technology and the Journalism Related? And democracy?
- Advances in communication technology have led to advances in journalism and news dissemination.
- The spread of political information to citizens and the handing down of ideals and principles allowed the
evolution of democratic rules and change of system from direct voting to representative democracy.

- Those in power did not like the spread and each access to newspapers
- They feared that the printing and the newspaper could be used as a tool to educate the masses,
which would then lead to discontent, questioning of authority and civil unrest - they were basically
worried that the citizens might start complaining.
- Some journalists who wrote criticism towards the governors on their newspapers were even executed.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH, MEDIA FREEDOM AND FREEDOM OF ACCESS TO GOVERNMENT INFORMATION

- Printers and writers started gaining freedom of speech and freedom of the press as an increasing number of
newspapers appeared on the streets.
- It is the inalienable right of every citizen to have a voice in making the laws he is called to obey. result of
the meeting at Bakery Hill, Ballarat on 11/11/1854
- But not every country have achieved this yet; Australia still doesnt have complete freedom of speech.
Freedom of communication in Australia is only as free as the law permits.

Technology has given journalists an ability to circumvent political restrictions and new weapons to use in the
continuing battle for greater media freedom and freedom of speech. It has enabled and empowered them to gather
and report news as it happens, and for the public to access that news on demand.
