Introduction
Once the preserve of science
fiction, Artificial Intelligence
(AI) is now firmly embedded in
our day-to-day lives. Maps that
compute the optimal driving
route for a journey based on
current traffic, smart song
suggestions from Pandora,
friend recommendations, job
recommendations, product
recommendations based on
your purchase history all
are powered by AI. Even email
spam filters, which learn to
differentiate between email you
do and dont want to receive,
rely on a form of AI.
In recent years weve become
accustomed to seeing AI
referenced in business tag
lines and popular culture. In
2011 IBM Watson defeated the
worlds two best players of the
Jeopardy quiz show. In March
2016 Google DeepMinds
AlphaGo eclipsed the 1997
achievements of IBMs Deep
Blue when it defeated Lee Sedol
in a five-game match of Go. Siri
and Cortana are AI assistants we
can carry in our pockets. And yet
these achievements only hint at
the future of AI.
To understand the current
state of AI and what the future
holds, we must first split our
understanding of AI into three
definitions:
Artificial Narrow Intelligence
(ANI): Sometimes referred to as
Weak AI, this is the most limited
form of AI and this is what is
currently possible in 2016.
ANI is capable of carrying out
specific tasks brilliantly, using
a combination of advanced
algorithms, deep learning
and various other techniques
depending on the use. Often,

Natural Language processing
is employed to facilitate human
interaction.
This AI is narrow because it
is incapable of carrying out
any task outside of its specific
purpose. Impressive as AlphaGo
may be at playing Go, it would
be flummoxed if you asked it for
restaurant recommendations.
Artificial General Intelligence
(AGI): Sometimes referred to as
Strong AI or Human-Level AI. At
this level, AI would be capable
of performing any task to the
standard of a human. Precisely
when AGI will be achieved is a
subject of debate, with most AI
specialists predicting it will occur
around 2040.
To reach AGI requires hardware
comparable to the human
brain, which can process

approximately 10 quadrillion
calculations per second on
just 20 watts of power. Such
a computer actually already
exists in Chinas Tianhe-2,
which can handle 34 quadrillion
calculations per second. Spread
across 720 square meters,
costing USD 390 million, and
requiring 24 megawatts of
power, Tianhe-2 is clearly
inappropriate for the consumer
market. However, it does
demonstrate that hardware is
unlikely to be the biggest block
on the development of AGI.
Developing software that is as
advanced as the human mind
poses a greater challenge.
While such software does not
currently exist, the majority of
computer scientists believe the
most promising approach could
be to build an AI that can code
changes into itself enabling it
to develop improvements on its
own AI. This would enable it to
become progressively smarter,
and to constantly build upon
its own intelligence with an
exponential increase in gains.
Artificial Superintelligence
(ASI): This is an AI that is
more advanced than human
intelligence. Due to the Law of
Accelerating Returns, this state
could potentially be realized in
mere days of even hours after
AGI is achieved.
The consequences of
developing ASI are, by its very
definition, unknown. This level
of intelligence would soon
be many billion times more
intelligent than the smartest
human. Because of this, it is
impossible for anyone to predict
with certainty what this leap in
technology will bring forth. An

end to global warming, a cure
to cancer, human extinction,
the end of human mortality, and
eternal agelessness are all being
considered as very possible
outcomes. Stephen Hawking
describes the advent of ASI as
a moment that could spell the
end of the human race, while
Ray Kurzweil believes it could
introduce a human-AI synthesis
or technological singularity that
can best be described as a form
of utopia.
This may sound like science
fiction, but if we look at the ANI
of 2016 we can already see the
impact of these developments,
most noticeably on the
workforce.
It is estimated that 50% of
todays jobs across the globe
will be serviced by AI in 2050.

below already demonstrate this
movement, with repetitive, data-
driven, non-social occupations
being the most susceptible to
early replacement. Roles that
require lateral, creative thinking,
empathy or social sensitivity are
the hardest to automate. ANI
is already advanced enough to
handle a wide spectrum of jobs,
from creating nutritious vegan
meat to predicting the success
of a startup.
For approximately the next 25
years, ANI innovations will be
restricted to carrying out specific
tasks, or a defined group of
specific tasks. Processing
jobs considered complex
to the human brain such
as advanced mathematical
calculations will be easy work
for an ANI. Conversely, its often
the most mundane tasks for
example, differentiating between
a picture of a dog and a cat
that remain incredibly complex
for our current generation of
ANI. As computer scientist
Donald Knuth explains, AI has
by now succeeded in doing
essentially everything that
requires thinking but has failed
to do most of what people and
animals do without thinking.
Until AGI is achieved, ANI is
reliant on machine learning
algorithms which require huge
data sets and an adaptation of
our natural world to be capable
of comprehension. In the words
of John Martinis, a quantum
physicist currently working at
Google, machine-learning
algorithms are really kind of
stupid. They need so many
examples to learn. The ANI
examples below are only able
to perform their specific tasks
because humans have already

adapted the natural environment
for them. X.ai may be able to
take the pain out of scheduling
meetings, but it can only do so
if everyone keeps their digital
calendar up to date and attaches
the necessary information.
Until AGI or near-AGI is achieved
this adaptation of environments
will remain a necessity. But as
is evident in McCann Japans
recent appointment of an AI
as Creative Director, this gap
between ANI and AGI is closing
fast.

The uncanny idea which
bears a striking resemblance
to an episode of the UK's
Black Mirror science fiction
series, which explores the
dark implications of digital
