The words in bold are what I think less commonly used

1. Some people think young people are more influenced by their friends than their parents or
teachers. Do you agree or disagree?
Answer:

Nobody can deny that friends have huge impacts on young people, especially when the majority of their
time is spent with their friends. However, it is by no means clear that more influence came from their
friends, as families and teachers also play vital roles in adolescents lives.

On the one hand, it can be seen that young adults spend most of their time in schools, socializing with
their friends, instead of conversing with parents or teachers. Such long duration of interacting with their
peers can change their opinions on certain topics to match with those of their friends, altering their
behaviours, thinkings, and characteristics. Furthermore, people from the same age group tend to have
the same taste in music, fashion, and ideology, making it easier for friends of the same generation to
bond and influence each other.

Conversely, parents and teachers are considered figures of authority to young adults, meaning they have
big effects on their children/pupils psychological development. Teachers and parents can impose
discipline on them which allows them to absorb conventions and codes of conducts which they can follow
themselves, hopefully leading to an absence of truancy, bullying, and delinquency. Moreover, young
people usually perceive parents/teachers as role models, and thus they will actively seek out their advices.
This is because it is unarguable that mature people have much more life experience and knowledge
compared to young adults; therefore, it is only natural for them to want to study from their elders
wisdom.

To conclude, it appears that, while friends can impact young peoples way of thinking and processing
information, families and teachers also contribute substanstially to their development.

The pie chart provides information on the proportions of tourists in four different categories of tourist
attractions and in five theme parks in Britain in 1999.

It is clear that theme parks and museums and galleries were the two most popular types of tourist
attraction in that year. As for theme parks, Black Pleasure Beach had the most visitors, followed by
Atton Towers.

At a closer and more detailed look, we can see that 38% of the surveyed tourists went to visit Theme
Parks, and 37% of them went to museums or galleries. By contrast, historic houses and monuments only
received 16% of the sample, while wildlife parks and zoos only saw 9% of them, making it the most
unpopular type of tourist attraction in the year.

Considering the theme park section, almost half of the people who answered the survey (47%) had been
to Black Pool Pleasure Beach. Atton Towers came in second place on the popularity ladder with 17% of
the visitors visited this theme park, followed by Pleasureland in Southport with 16%. Chessington World
of Adventures and Legoland in Windsor each welcomed 10% of the sample, making them the least
popular amusement parks out of the five.

The line graph illustrates the changes in food price index (in points) and oil prices (dollars per barrels) in
the period from 2000 to 2001.

It is clear that average food price index and oil price increased considerably from 2000 to 2011, although
many fluctuations could be observed in the same period. Furthermore, the trends for both products are
virtually similar, as a correlation of 93.6% was suggested.

In a closer and more detailed look, it can be seen that between 2000 and 2007, food price index and oil
prices steadily rose from 90 points to 140 points and 25 dollars per barrel to 60 respectively. From 2007
to mid 2008, both commodities experienced leaps from 140 points to 220 for food price index and 60 to
approximately 135 dollars per barrel for oil price.

Unexpectedly, the year 2009 saw dramatic drops in prices of both products to 140 points for food index
and 40 dollars for one oil barrel. However, in 2011, a sharp recovery can be seen in food price index, as
it soared by 100 points to 240; oil price also recovered, but not as much as food index, as it only
increased to 100 dollars, which was lower than it had been in mid 2008.

2. The government should allocate more funds to public services instead of wasting money on arts
such as music, painting and so on. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Answer:

Some people believe that government spending should be directed towards public services rather than
arts such as music and paintings. While there are many benefits that can be derived from investing in
community work, arts also contribute greatly to a society and cannot be disregarded.

To begin, those who support public spending point to the importance of it in improving citizens quality
of life. For example, a society can have low literacy rate or a history of serious crimes, whether financial,
political, homicidal, or otherwise. In such situations, the argument goes, community spending can
alleviate such problems by reducing those rates by opening more free public schools or police stations,
effectively increasing the citizens life standard. Furthermore, arts can be seen as niche, as many people
are materialistic and do not enjoy arts, leading to a large sum of money being wasted just to appeal to a
small selection of audience which otherwise could have been spent to help the society as a whole.

On the other hand, in a business sense, unique arts can be considered as alternative assets and can
bring back fortune for the government. For instances, commodities such as conceptual and
contemporary paintings fetch high prices on the market. The money received from selling those artistic
creations can be used to reinvest in public services, consequently improving the communitys standard
of living. The second reason is that arts can bring more visitors to the country, netting more profit for
local businesses. It is because art is a manifestation of a countrys traditional and cultural value, which
is attractive to foreign tourists who are looking for exotic beauty and eye-opening experience.

To sum it up, it seems to me that, while public services are major contributing factors to the
development of a nation, arts also play a vital role in a society; therefore, it is mandatory that both
should receive fundings from the government, neither side should get more than the other.
