COURSE DESCRIPTION / COURSE OBJECTIVES / LEARNING OUTCOMES

In your capacity as a business practitioner, you will be conducting research, interpreting reports, and acting on
the results of business research. Hence, even if research is not the career of your choice, you will need to
understand and absorb the research process in order to better judge the suitability, reliability, and validity of a
research study. And this is what we will try to do during the course of this semester.

This course aims:

to familiarize the student with the techniques of business research methods
to have the student gain perspective and practice in applying these tools to real life situations through
cases and a research project.
to develop an understanding of the use of information in strategic decision making.

At the end of this semester, you will be able to achieve the following outcomes:

1. Define and understand the basic terms and concepts of business research.
2. Conduct a complete research project which includes the following steps:
a. stating research objectives
b. designing the research plan
c. creating and testing research instruments
d. collecting data
e. using statistical packages to analyze data
f. presenting the results and recommendations through oral presentations and written reports

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

This is an asynchronous online class. Every module will have lecture notes/slides with some voice overs to
explain concepts. It is highly recommended that you absorb these materials at the beginning of the week.
Quizzes are designed to test your application of concepts. You will not find straight definitional questions. So
give yourself time to absorb and understand the material. A couple tips . . .
Allocate at least three hours a week to review the materials.
Check the course Blackboard site everyday!
If you do not understand the material, reach out to me early. Do not assume that you will be able to
look up the glossary or subject index in the book and answer the questions.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS / FORMAT

Grading
The areas of evaluation are as follows:

Assignments %
Point Value Grade
Topic Approval Form 5%
90 100% A
Weekly Discussions 20%
80 89.99% B
Midterm Exam 10% 70 79.99% C
Paper Submission Part 1 (Chapters 1 & 2) 15% 60 69.99% D

APA Reference Assignment 15%

Paper Submission Part 2 (Entire Paper) 25%

Final Exam 10%

TOTAL 100%

**Please allow 2-4 days for all grading including exams and other assignments**

Do not expect any adjustments to class grades at the end of the semester. No extra work will be available for
improving a poor grade. Do not even ask! And, many of the assignments BUILD on future assignments, so if
you miss one, you cant make it up once the other assignments are due. For example, you cant turn in the
topic approval form at the end of the semester, after the paper is due. You cant turn in Part 1 of the paper
after Part 2 is due.

Grades and Posting of Final Grades

If you have a challenge to a specific exam/assignment grade and/or specific question, you must use the
following Grievance Procedure. The Grievance Procedure requires you to present your case to me in writing
with the following information: (a) Student name (b) Question or item number (c) Your chosen answer (d) The
basis to support your alternative, such as text pages, with clear rationale. I will review any grievances and will
make a judgment about whether additional points will be awarded. Each faculty member has the right to post
or not post final course grades for each class. Final course grades provided to a student by a faculty member
may not be relied upon as official. Students may access their official final grades online. According to FERPA,

Dr. Jennifer L. Flanagan jltflanagan@twu.edu 940.898.3128

BUS 5153.70 Research Methods in Business Fall 2017 100% Online course

faculty may not provide final grade information to students via telephone, email, posting or any other source
which might compromise student confidentiality.

Late Assignments
Late assignments may be accepted with no penalties, but only if the student obtains a University Excused
Absence from Student Life. This includes written assignments, missed exams or quizzes, and online discussions.
If Student Life does not issue a University Excused Absence, then late work may be accepted with the
following penalties: 10 points off for each day late. It is up to the instructor whether a late assignment will be
accepted if there is no University Excused Absence.

Methods of Instruction
This course will utilize a variety of instructional methods including online lectures, online discussions, parallel
reading, internet assignments, and online group interaction. As a graduate student, you are expected to
contribute to the learning experience by sharing your knowledge and experiences and allowing others to
respond and to reflect on your thoughts. Learning is a community experience and we learn best in the midst
of interacting with others.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Communication with the Professor

I believe that frequent and open communication between the professor and the student enhances the quality
of learning. To make the task easier, we now have the advantage of e-mail which makes 24 hour
communication possible. I urge you to use e-mail or any other means of communication to let me know your
concerns or queries. Please do not wait till the end of the semester to work on your grades. At that late stage I
cannot do anything to help you. This course offers sufficient opportunity to make good grades without having
to resort to extra credit which as a rule, I do not allow.

The class e-mail is available on Blackboard. Please make sure you are familiar with how Blackboard works. It is
important that you do so, because from time to time, I will be sending you material that we will discuss in class,
or notifications of changes in reading assignments, project schedules etc. I did not receive the e-mail is not an
acceptable or responsible excuse for this class.

You are also welcome to use the class mailing list to bring to our attention important marketing events or any
other course related news that you think would be of interest to the class.
CAUTION: The mailing list can be used ONLY for course related material and NOT for personal mail.

Academic Honesty/Plagiarism
Honesty in completing assignments is essential to the mission of the University and to the development of the
personal integrity of students. In submitting graded assignments, students affirm that they have neither given
nor received unauthorized assistance, and that they have abided by all other provisions of the Code of Conduct
in the TWU Student Handbook. Cheating, plagiarism, fabrication or other kinds of academic dishonesty will not
be tolerated and will result in appropriate sanctions that may include failing an assignment, failing the class, or
being suspended or expelled. Suspected cases in this course may be reported to Student Life. The specific
disciplinary process for academic dishonesty is found in the TWU Student Handbook. The TWU library link,
Avoiding Plagiarism, will aid students in completing their assignments with integrity.

Dr. Jennifer L. Flanagan jltflanagan@twu.edu 940.898.3128

BUS 5153.70 Research Methods in Business Fall 2017 100% Online course

In an effort to ensure the integrity of the academic process, Texas Womans University vigorously affirms the
importance of academic honesty as defined by the Student Handbook. Therefore, in an effort to detect and
prevent plagiarism, faculty members at Texas Womans University may now use a tool called Turnitin to
compare a students work with multiple sources. It then reports a percentage of similarity and provides links to
those specific sources. The tool itself does not determine whether or not a paper has been plagiarized. Instead,
that judgment must be made by the individual faculty member.

Assignments will be randomly checked for plagiarism using Turnitin.com.

Plagiarism, in all its forms, is considered academic dishonesty and is taken very seriously. If your paper contains
ANY plagiarized content, you will not receive any points for the assignment and you will be subjected to the
consequences of academic dishonest described above. If you have any questions about plagiarism, you should
watch the film online at the TWU library web site entitled Avoiding Plagiarism. The web site is:
http://www.twu.edu/library/.

Plagiarized content includes any and all of the following:

Word-for-word material from another source that is not in quotation marks and/or properly
cited
Paraphrased material that is put into your own words but still follows the original authors
thought pattern and is not cited with a citation following the content.

Your textbook is NOT an exception. You MUST cite external resources regardless of where they come from.
You are strongly encouraged to use references to guide your writing but I am more interested in hearing YOUR
ideas and YOUR arguments. You should not rely on quotes from other sources to make up the bulk of your
papers. They should be used sparingly and only to support YOUR arguments.

Any sources that you do use should be valid sources such as the text book, library books, journal articles, news
stories, government websites, or the website of companies you are discussing. Any other websites should not
be considered valid resources especially Wikipedia. Use of Wikipedia or any other illegitimate sources will
immediately result in a failing grade.

APA Format - The official form and style format for the School of Management is APA. All written assignments
must use appropriate APA format for citations, references, and other aspects of form and style.
http://www.twu.edu/downloads/som/TWU_SOM_APA_Manual.pdf

Purdue has an excellent website with tips and instructions on how to properly use and cite references to
prevent plagiarism. You may use either APA or MLA format. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ . Another
website that is useful is Son of Citation (Google it).

When in doubt check with me! If you are unsure whether you are committing plagiarism or a source is not
legitimate, ask me first because there will be NO allowances made. I didnt know that was plagiarism/a bad
reference is NOT a valid excuse.

Attendance & Participation for ONLINE COURSES

Since this is an online course, we will not have regularly scheduled meetings, either online or live, but students
are expected to attend class online via discussions, assignments, and responding to emails. Students will

Dr. Jennifer L. Flanagan jltflanagan@twu.edu 940.898.3128

BUS 5153.70 Research Methods in Business Fall 2017 100% Online course

need to complete all assignments and course requirements consistent with the assignment schedule. Excused
absences will not generate extra time for meeting deadlines and scheduled events. Since late assignments are
not accepted, you are strongly encouraged to submit assignments prior to the due dates. Students will be
expected to participate consistent with course objectives and goals.

It is the students responsibility to: Stay active in the course by logging into the course on a regular
daily basis, Attend class regularly, and Always read every course announcement at the top of the
course. Feedback for assignments, university announcements, and major department announcements
will be posted to this forum.

Blackboard Issues
Please call the Help Desk for any technical questions related to Blackboard (940.898.3971). Faculty do not
fix problems in Blackboard. Instructional Support Services has technology information available for your
reference at http://www.twu.edu/blackboard/browsers.htm. Information on plug-ins for the Blackboard
application may be found at http://www.twu.edu/blackboard/plugins.htm

Internet and Email

You will need a TWU e-mail that you check regularly. It is CRITICAL that you get in the habit of checking your
email at once a day.

You will need access to the Blackboard system. If you were not automatically added when you were enrolled,
you need to email me IMMEDIATELY so that you have full access to course content. If you dont have one
already, set up your Blackboard account immediately.

Course Schedule
All assignments are due on the date, at the time, and must be submitted in the manner and location specified
in the guidelines. Course Assignments (e.g. DISCUSSION BOARD, Discussion Questions, Quizzes, and Article
Analyses) will close at the stated times on the due date. Once closed, students can no longer access the
assignment or discussion forum. (However, all work that is posted on Blackboard is preserved and can always
be viewed by the professor, even when you cannot.)

Student Responsibility
As a professional, you are expected to come to class, and to come prepared. You are expected to read and
thoughtfully study all assigned materials and complete all assignments. Always be ready to discuss the
assigned materials. Ask questions to clarify any parts of the material that you do not understand. You are
expected to participate in class appropriately. You are expected to turn in assignments on the dates
scheduled.

An EMBA/MBA program is your opportunity to learn how to better think, process information, write, and
present. This requires work and a great deal of personal effort. I am always willing to help, but I cannot go
through the process of struggling to learn for you. Please care enough about yourself to work hard in order to
gain as much as you can from your classes.

Study Time/ Material Covered

Most of TWUs EMBA/MBA classes are designed to take three times as much time OUTSIDE of class as they do

Dr. Jennifer L. Flanagan jltflanagan@twu.edu 940.898.3128

BUS 5153.70 Research Methods in Business Fall 2017 100% Online course

in class. Remember that a large part of your learning experience depends upon your efforts, not just the
efforts of the instructor. A typical student should plan about 10 hours of time outside class each week for each
three-hour graduate class. Some classes will require more. Since this particular class does not meet as often,
most of your time is spent in independent study and research, and working with your team.

Syllabus Subject to Change

The data provided in this document is for information and planning only. The dates are subject to change based
on the material covered and unexpected circumstances that require changing the schedule. Additionally,
policies and procedures in this syllabus are subject to change.

ADA Non-Discrimination Policy

Texas Womans University seeks to provide appropriate and reasonable accommodations for all individuals
who have a recognized disability. The University complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws,
regulations, and guidelines with respect to providing appropriate academic accommodations to afford equal
educational opportunity specifically Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with
Disabilities Act.

If you anticipate the need for reasonable accommodations to meet the requirements of this course, you must
register with the office of Disability Support Services (Main Campus: CFO 106, 940-898-3835 (voice), 940-898-
3830 (TDD), dss@twu.edu) in order to obtain the required official notification of your accommodation needs.
Please plan to meet with me by appointment or during office hours to discuss approved accommodations and
how my course requirements and activities may impact your ability to fully participate.

Dallas students are encouraged to use campus phones to contact the Office of Disability Support
Services on the Denton campus by dialing 81-3835. The DSS webpage is located at
http://www.twu.edu/disability-support-services/

Code of Student Conduct and Discipline Policy

Every graduate student is expected to comply with the student conduct and discipline policy of the
University. Every graduate student should obtain a copy of the booklet entitled Student Handbook, which
sets forth the official policies governing all student conduct at TWU. The Code of Student Conduct clearly
stipulates a students rights in the event he or she is charged with misconduct or some violation of the
Universitys regulations. This may also be accessed online at http://www.twu.edu/o-
sl/StudentHandbook.pdf.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly Online Discussions
Student participation in the online discussion forums is considered a necessary factor in the learning process.
Students are expected to read all additional assigned materials for each discussion forum.

The discussions will be graded for:

1. Frequency: Number and regularity of your discussion comments. Students are expected to log into
the course and post/respond to each graded discussion forum a minimum of two times. Your
response and then you respond to two other students.

2. Quality: Content of your contributions. Examples of quality posts include:

Midterm & Final Exam

There will be a Midterm and Final, as shown on the course schedule. IF YOU MISS AN EXAM, please keep in
mind . . . . A make-up exam is both a right and a privilege, and therefore, I expect you not to abuse that right.
The privilege is only for the student who has a valid reason for not being able to take the exam on its regularly
scheduled time and day. A make-up exam will be given to a student only if the excuse given is in accordance
with the legitimate excuses as certified by the University. Appropriate documentation is required. The student
must notify the instructor of absences before the exam. It is the responsibility of the student to schedule the
make-up exam.

Expect technology to fail. Be surprised when it works. What this means is that do not put off taking
quizzes until the very last minute. At that point, if you run into technical difficulties, I will not be able
to help you. Plan ahead. Sometimes, students have been kicked off Blackboard when they are taking
a test. In these cases, BB does not register any of the answers you have already given. Also, it will
not let you take the test again. In these cases, the only option is for me to reset your test and for
you to take it again. If this happens to you, DO NOT PANIC. Send me just one e-mail. When I reset it,
you will receive an e-mail from me saying I have done so. You can then retake the

APA References Assignment

As you collect secondary information for your paper and build your literature review, you will find several
references. You will submit this as a separate assignment to grade for APA format. Submit a reference section
with YOUR NAME and a list of your references in ABC order. Make sure they are in APA format, as that is all
that will be graded. You can add to these references for the final paper.

Research Paper
Throughout the semester, you should be working on your Semester Research Paper. You will select a research
problem in business. This can be anything where you can formulate a problem statement and a testable
hypothesis. The paper should include the background of the problem, the problem statement, the purpose of
the study, the studys hypothesis(es), the methodology to be employed in the study, and a review of the
literature pertaining to the problem, as well as any instruments you propose to use to test your hypothesis(es)
(i.e. a questionnaire). There is a topic approval form that must be completed IN FULL and you MUST gain
approval on this topic to proceed. It is YOUR responsibility to pace yourself throughout the semester in order
to have a finished product by the due date.

Dr. Jennifer L. Flanagan jltflanagan@twu.edu 940.898.3128

BUS 5153.70 Research Methods in Business Fall 2017 100% Online course

Youll submit your paper in 2 parts. Part 1 will comprise of Chapters 1 & 2. You can add to this paper (these
chapters) for the final paper. Part 2 will be ALL Chapters (1-5).

Details on the Research Paper

You must submit your topic for approval! (see topic approval form). You need to refer to the APA Publication
Manual for the mechanical details of a prospectus preparation.

o APA Format
o 11 or 12-pt font
o Between .5-1 in margins
o Running Header with paper title (shorten if necessary) and Footer with page numbers.

All papers will be scanned through turnitin.com automatically when submitted through Blackboard.

Chapters for this paper should start on new pages and follow this format:

Chapter 1 - Student should include chapter titles and subheadings (for all chapters) for each of the following
elements when preparing Chapter 1 on the paper:

A. Background What led you into doing this problem? Why are you interested in this problem?

B. Problem Statement What is the problem of your study? You need to be very specific. When we talk about
a problem in research, it does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. You can have a problem
where you are trying to determine the attitudes and opinions of a response group.

C. Purpose of the Study Why is your study important (not necessarily to get an A in ECO 595)? What is the
significance of your study?

D. Study Hypothesis(es) An educated guess on the results of your study.

Chapter 2 Titled REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

A literature review is where you review published material related to your problem. IF YOU CHOOSE
THE SAME TOPIC (PROBLEM) YOU USED FOR PAPER 1, YOU MAY USE THIS PAPER FOR YOUR REVIEW OF
LITERATURE. If you choose a different topic for your Prospectus you must do another review of literature
that relates to your new topic.

Chapter 3 Titled METHODOLOGY

In this chapter you will tell the reader very specifically HOW you are going to solve your problem that
was stated in Chapter 1. You must give very detailed information in this chapter. For example describe
your proposed sample. This must be a realistic sample--how will you contact them, who are they, how
will you get them to participate, etc. In other words, describe in detail the procedures and steps that will
be used to gather the data.

Dr. Jennifer L. Flanagan jltflanagan@twu.edu 940.898.3128

BUS 5153.70 Research Methods in Business Fall 2017 100% Online course

Chapter 4 Titled FINDINGS

Since you will not be collecting data you will not have any actual findings. But, you need to create
hypothetical data (or find similar hypothetical data, and run a statistical analysis, and develop at least
one Table and at least one Bar Graph for this chapter, using the statistical analysis. You should also
have a short explanation of your hypothetical findings.**

Chapter 5 Titled SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In this chapter all you will need to do is the Summary, Recommendations, and Conclusions. You must
have made-up data in order to do conclusions and recommendations. In the Summary you will need to
state "what you did"--your problem statement. Also, in this Chapter, you need to tell "how you did it --
Methodology. This is even a great place to discuss limitations to the study, or perhaps what could be
done differently next time.

REFERENCES This section will contain a list of alphabetized References from your literature review. You must
have References in APA format.

APPENDIX This section will contain a copy of your survey questionnaire, for example.

Note: Start each of these on a new page, and use appropriate subheadings in EACH chapter. See sample papers
for examples.

**TWUs IRB & Human Subjects in Research Policy

Note: You will not be collecting the actual data in this class. However, you should be aware of the following research procedure: It is the policy of
Texas Womans University (TWU) that all research conducted by any TWU faculty member, staff member, or student using human subjects must
have prior approval from a TWU Institutional Review Board (IRB) before the research is initiated (see TWU Policy 1.15 Human Subjects Research).
The TWU IRBs on each campus (Denton IRB #00000829, Dallas IRB #00000844, and Houston IRB #00000845) review and approve research
involving human subjects. The IRBs operate under Federalwide Assurance # FWA 00000178 issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS). http://www.twu.edu/downloads/research-sponsored/irb-procedures.pdf

You can find more information on TWUs Research and IRB policies and procedures here http://www.twu.edu/research/irb.asp

Semester Research Paper Topic Approval Form

Point Allocations:

100 Points Perfect! Check your notes section in your grades for additional comments, but
otherwise, youre good to go!

50 Points Look in the notes section for comments on revisions to be made AND the deadline in
which to make them. Anything submitted past the deadline set in the notes cannot be made up and
your 50 will stand in the gradebook.

0 Points Either nothing was submitted, the incorrect form was submitted, or whatever was
submitted was incomplete. CHECK THE COMMENTS SECTION and get this back by the deadline set in
the comments!!

Please note: This assignment grade cannot be made up after the midterm. It doesnt make much sense to turn in a
topic approval form, for example, a week before the paper is due. So, GET THIS IN and GET YOUR APPROVAL by the
deadline. After the Midterm, this cant be made up at all zero points!
