GUCR ELECTIONS 2017

I. Introduction from President, Allie Williams

II. Candidate Statements
III. Information on Election Procedure

A Message from GUCR President

Dear GUCR members,

It has been an absolute honor and pleasure serving as President of the Georgetown University
College Republicans. On behalf of the entire 2016-2017 GUCR Board, I would like to thank you for
your trust in our vision and willingness to embrace our focus of constructive dialogue within the
chapter and externally with other campus groups. Not only has the Board achieved tangible results and
spread a positive message of conservatism across campus, but we have also learned a lot throughout
the experience.
My time as President has not been a walk in the park. Navigating the rough waters after the
divisive 2016 Presidential Election was no easy task. Divisions within our chapter reflected the lack of
cohesion amongst the national party, and rebranding the group and conservative label on campus was a
very daunting task. However, I ran for President on the slogan a New GUCR Century and, in the
spirit of Senator Marco Rubio, I was determined to advocate for a conservatism that does not
discriminate or make scapegoats out of populations, but instead empowers people to catch up, to give
them the tools at their disposal that make it possible for them to access all the hope, all the promise, all
the opportunity that America offers. This vision of inclusivity and equal opportunity was extremely
important to me throughout my leadership of GUCR.
During the past year, GUCR has engaged in productive discussions with the College
Democrats, Bipartisan Coalition, and several other groups with whom we disagree. On topics ranging
from gun rights/control to healthcare and campaign finance reform, our members have had the
opportunity to share their beliefs while hearing from the other side. Throughout this vision of opening
up conversation, however, GUCR under my leadership has remained unabashedly conservative and
proud to be the minority opinion in classes and group discussions. We have organized social events
such as sports outings, shooting trips, and general gatherings to maintain conservative unity and build
relationships that will last beyond the gates of 37th and 0 St.
I would like to thank members of my Board for working with me to achieve this positive
conservatism on campus, regardless of the difficulties we faced. I will forever live by the idea that if
you fervently believe in something, you have to fight for it, and I hope that the next Board continues to
advocate for an inclusive, true conservatism on this campus. I love Georgetown and the CRs on this
campus, and I know that the group can continue to make positive strides on the Hill and beyond. I wish
the next Board success in that endeavor.

With sincere appreciation,

Allie Williams
GUCR President 2017-2018
Your 2017-2018 Candidates

President
Jake Lyons
Hey yall - my name is Jake Lyons and Im a sophomore in the college from Hampton, Tennessee. I am running
to be GUCRs new chair.
I have been involved with GUCR since first arriving on campus and have been in several roles first as
Freshman rep, then Director of Campus Affairs, and currently Vice Chair. Its been a pleasure and an honor
serving on the board and I look forward to hopefully continuing.
GUCRs membership deserve a responsive leadership that provides more opportunities that the general
members are interested in. Being in DC, we have countless opportunities to assist members by providing career
driven events. Increasing the number of speaker events will also be a top priority going forward.
As republicans on an overwhelmingly liberal campus, we all share a common bond that is not being exploited as
an organization. We have lacked the social elements that could make GUCR into a true community here on
campus for conservatives. I look forward to working on this issue with the board and membership.
I want to know from you all what works and what doesnt. I want to listen to your suggestions and criticisms
and then act on them to improve the state of GUCR. Improving our club cant be done by just the leadership, nor
should GUCR only benefit those in leadership. I recognize these facts and humbly ask that you would vote for
me and together we might make GUCR a better organization for all conservatives at Georgetown.

Vice President
Peter Hamilton
Hi everyone, my name is Peter Hamilton and I am running to be your next vice chair! My focus, if elected,
would be on increasing the general public-facing aspect of the club while also maintaining strong internal
connections. Specifically, I believe it would be a great way to make friends and represent the Republican
message through the creation of an editorial writing team which would submit monthly or bi-weekly editorials
to The Hoya or other on-campus publications.
Im originally from Seattle, Washington, so when I first came to Georgetown I was pretty comfortable with
being the only conservative in a crowd. However, after talking with a lot of students and especially freshmen I
realized Georgetown has created a pretty hostile environment towards conservative students. I know that for me
that its exhausting to constantly have to defend my political views, even if Im doing something completely
separate, like grabbing food or hanging out with friends. I know that GUCR can create a community of like-
minded individuals who can create a sense of fellowship and belonging that can sometimes be hard to find at
Georgetown.
Jake and I hope to make College Republicans at Georgetown an open and growing community, and wed love to
hear from you as well. No matter what we hope to advocate for you and look forward to seeing you in the
future!

Treasurer
Hayley Grande
Hey Republicans! My name is Hayley Grande, and I am a Freshman from Orange, Connecticut. Being from the
Northeast, I was one of the only conservative voices in my community, especially among my peers. I am beyond
excited to finally be surrounded by other Republicans who share similar views about small government, creating
economic opportunities, and protecting liberty. I am running to be your next treasurer because I want to play a
greater part in making sure those beliefs are well represented on campus. Ensuring that budgetary and funding
related matters are in order is integral to the functionality of our club. As your treasurer, I promise to be
organized, timely, and transparent so that GUCR can thrive and have a great year!
Secretary
Stacie Hartmann
Hello fellow Republicans. My name is Stacie and Im a freshman studying government and economics from
Massachusetts. Im running to be secretary for GUCR because Im passionate about furthering the goals of this
organization and keeping the club well run and organized. As secretary, Ill be committed to sending weekly
emails to update you on when well be holding meetings and which events were hosting that you can get
involved in. My main push will be to get non-board members more involved, and I believe this starts through
emails that include sign-ups for volunteering opportunities or site visit opportunities. Id also push for
weekly meetings so that we can increase our voice and presence on campus, as we are already at a disadvantage
by being the minority opinion. I will work diligently to keep meeting minutes and send EAFs for approval so
that we can host events that attract large numbers of students, allowing us to get our name out there. In a broader
scope, as a voting board member, I have plans to take advantage of our location in Washington, D.C. more often
by sending students to lobby for proposed conservative legislation. Increasing presence on campus, especially at
Georgetown, needs to have a social element so Ill work with other board members to increase our social events
(which could also lead to an increase in membership). Overall, I am passionate about the Republican voice
being loud and clear at Georgetown and ask for your vote to make that happen.

Director of Campus Affairs

Hans Schundler
Hello, Im Hans Schundler. I am running to become Director of Campus Affairs, a position I held this Fall as an
appointment. In Campus Affairs, I see one of the most fundamentally important responsibilities this organization
offers. The description of the position which you have read emphasizes administrative work such as securing
room space and organizing events. To be effective in these duties, the Director absolutely must have sufficient
prior experience, and I do. As president of my high school student body, I organized and catalogued every
student organization in the school with a new website (which would benefit GUCR as well), planned their
tabling schedules, and organized social events and major club activities.
However, while I have a successful record in the administrative side of Campus Affairs, I have the most to offer
regarding our social interactions with Georgetown students. As general members of GUCR, you will primarily
hear of the Campus Affairs position in talks of tabling. It is among the most improvable aspects of this club, and
I realized that immediately upon assuming the position in September. As Director of Campus Affairs, I am
currently working to, and need your vote to continue to improve our presence in Red Square and beyond. I will
help design a variety of new T-shirts, posters, and memorabilia that will replace the rather antiquated selection
we currently sell, and will always make sure that GUCR speakers are blasting the best music in Red Square.
God bless.

Director of External Affairs

Rowan Saydlowski
Hey Republicans! My name is Rowan and Im running to be your Director of External Affairs. One of my
biggest goals for this year is to bring a large number of speakers to campus so we can constantly broadcast our
partys ideals across the school. Having been involved in conservative politics for years, Ive been lucky to
make a lot of close connections that I can reach out to as potential speakers already, such as Rep. Dave Brat, Dr.
Larry Reed of the Foundation for Economic Education, and multiple members of the Trump administration. Ive
also been introduced to a speaker program that could potentially set us up with Wayne LaPierre of the NRA,
David French of National Review, and Ambassador John Bolton.
As for internships, Im excited to say that I already receive dozens of listings regarding internships not only on
the Hill but also at media sources and conservative non-profits. I also receive hundreds of listings of
conservative jobs for those who are graduating soon, and dozens of conservative event notices. Id be more than
happy to pass all of this info on to the club, as well as actively seeking out even more. One more goal I have in
this position is to coordinate with the other CR chapters much more often. If Im elected as your Director of
External Affairs, Ill work hard to use all of our potential outside resources as we fight Leftism on campus and
beyond.
Director of Communications
Paulina Enck
Fellow Georgetown Republicans! My name is Paulina Enck, and I want your vote for Communications
Director. I have been a Republican since I learned what each party stood for. The ideals of small government,
individual freedoms, and free markets resonated with me and have framed my political identity since elementary
school. A rare conservative in Princeton, NJ, I will translate the passion of my convictions towards the GUCR.
As communications director, I will dedicate myself to making sure that everyone involved in the club
will be as informed as possible about all GUCR events and meetings. I will work closely with the directors of
membership and campus affairs to reach out to as many conservatives as possible. We could get Republicans
who are not GUCR members to become involved with the group by first inviting them to club events.
I will enact a comprehensive approach to generating buzz about GUCR events. I will look into
advertising our events on Facebook groups for other conservative and political groups. I will also create a
GroupMe to announce events and meetings, as well as to answer members questions about upcoming events or
board issues they care about, to maintain accessibility and a level of transparency. Further, I will create a
website to act as a hub for all GUCR information.
We must involve ourselves with conservative issues on campus, to continue to craft an identity within
the Georgetown community. Well-written op-eds, debates, and open-to-the-community events could truly
allow GUCR to expand its reach.

Harrison Nugent
Hi there, my name is Harrison Nugent and I am a sophomore from Pineville, Louisiana. Im running for
reelection as GUCRs Director of Communications with the simple message that WE need experienced
individuals, passionate about the positions they hold, in order to fulfill our organizations goal of instilling in all
Americans a hope in the principles of Lincoln and Reagan that encourage opportunity and inclusivity.
I assert that we do not have to live in a future of partisan cheerleading but instead one where the
Republican Partydefined not by its opposition to Democrats but by its ideological support for free markets,
individual liberty, and personal responsibilitycan work with people from all walks of life to advance policy
that is in the national interest. Indeed, this is not a cry for party loyalty but instead a cry for national cohesion.
As your Director of Communications this past year I let my passion for this future manifest through
countless hours of preparing logos and graphics for GUCR-related events and opportunities, through hundreds
of flyers and social media posts highlighting our members and the work they have done, and most importantly
through my shared commitment to Allie and Jake and the entire board to perform any duty sent my way to the
best of my ability. Indeed, I have spent upwards of $100 out-of-pocket in design software to make sure that our
group has a professional appearance online, and it is that commitment with which I call upon in asking you for
your vote.
Claire Smith
All Scaramucci jokes aside, I am Claire Smith, and I am a junior in the College from Bucks
County, PA studying Government, Theatre, and Economics. I am running for Director of
Communications, because I believe in the power of open dialogue, fiscal conservatism, and the
Constitution. After having a Republican reawakening after the election, I switched my party
registration, and worked for my Congressman, Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-08), where I wrote seven
speeches that made the House floor. I currently intern for former Governor/Secretary of
Homeland Security Tom Ridge at his lobbying firm, and I will be interning for Senator Pat
Toomey next semester! Furthermore, I was raised Republican, as my aunt worked for the
Senate Budget Committee and the OMB under Mitch Daniels, and my great-grandfather
worked on former Senator Edward Brookes campaign. I can best describe myself as a problem
solver, not an ideologue, and seek to encourage change, working with other groups to ensure
our commitment to the GOP while welcoming many secret conservatives who fear retaliation
on a liberal-leaning campus by making CR inclusive and accessible for all.
As CRs Communications Director, I would focus on working with other political groups on
campus to bring interesting speakers to campus, increase CRs social media presence, work with
the Hoya and the Voice for opinion pieces, and engage in multimedia efforts to increase our
presence on campus, particularly in such a volatile climate.

Director of Membership
Christopher Castaldi-Moller
Hi Fellow CRs! For those of you who dont know me, my name is Chris Castaldi-Moller a proud
Jersey conservative and I am running to be your GUCR Membership Director for the coming year. During my
time at Georgetown as the current Freshman Representative, I have been fortunate to meet many conservative
students on campus, but many of them have unfortunately been reluctant to share their beliefs. As Membership
Director, I would direct all my energy to bring these closet conservatives out involved and engaged with the
cause of conservatism at Georgetown and would do so in three ways. First, I would help make GUCR an active
organization with ample opportunity for general membership involvement. One-on-one conversations, petitions
on national political issues, bi-weekly or weekly meetings, and other measures can and must be taken to engage
the GUCRs general membership, as well as non-GUCR republicans and conservatives. Second, I would be the
stalwart advocate for freedom of speech in the GUCR. As recent events (particularly the near-defunding of
Love-Saxa) have shown, the radical left at Georgetown will take any opportunity to advance its ideology and
shut down any dissent. This organization must, if it is truly a College Republican group, be loud, clear, and
decisive in supporting all those harmed by leftist bullying. As freedom of speech is one issue almost all
Republicans and most moderates agree on, I believe that emphasizing this issue would attract more students to
the GUCR and energize our current membership. Third, I believe that taking a big-tent approach being open to
conservatives of all inclinations will greatly help ensure that no Republican is alienated from the GUCR. I
firmly believe that the aforementioned efforts would help increase the strength of the Republican Party on this
campus. It would be my honor to help lead the GUCR in doing so, and it would be my honor to have your vote
on the 28th! Thank you, God Bless you, and Hoya Saxa!

Tyler Tate
Hi CRs, my name is Tyler Tate and Im a proud, lifelong conservative from Northern California! Ive
been heavily involved in GUCR since my freshmen year and Im running to be your next Membership Director!
Im running because I think GUCR must do more to orient its activities around the interests and goals of
our members and stick up for our values on campus. My vision for GUCR is of a club that is guided by the
interests of our members and is grounded in making our experiences as Republicans in D.C. exciting and
invaluable. On campus, GUCR must do more to create an environment where we can be proud of our political
beliefs!
Heres how we can accomplish this:

1. Empower general members through basing our activities, events, and spending decisions on member
input
2. Leverage our Georgetown connections to plan site visits to places like the Speakers Office & the
NRSC
3. Host career & skills building chats with prominent DC Republicans to make connections & offer career
information to GUCR members
4. Take full advantage of Republican control of DC by focusing on hosting dynamic speakers & engaging
events on campus
If you have any questions about my ideas for GUCR or past experience, please dont hesitate to text (916-865-
7164), email, or DM me on Facebook! If you agree with my ideas for improving GUCR, I hope I can count on
your support!
