Research & Professional Experience

May 2010- Graduate Research Assistant, WCR Lab, West Virginia University , Morgantown, USA.
Nov. 2015 Developed a new analytical framework for modeling, analyzing the performance, and determining
the data processing requirements of Cloud-RANs;
Developed new practical computationally aware schedulers for Cloud-RANs;
Developed a new analytical framework for the outage probability in wireless networks, which
accounts for the presence of Nakagami-fading, path loss and shadowing with interfering mobiles
drawn from an arbitrary point process. In order to reduce the computational time, the application
runs across multiple servers and processor cores in a cluster computer;

Supervised and trained undergraduate students in order to complete their summer research projects;
Developed applications for the software defined radio (SDR) platform USRP N210, using the
coded modulation library (CML), under the GNURadio development toolkit (using C and Python).

Mar. 2008- Research Software Engineer, SSBT Spa, R&D Department, Milan, Italy.
Dec. 2009 Designed a system-level simulator (using Labview, Simulink and C) of a transmitter (processing,
modulation & coding and OFDM generation) and receiver complaint with the standard DVB-T2
(working in close contact with European partners of the V&V groups of DVB-T2);
Designed a system-level simulator (using Labview, Simulink and C) of a transmitter (pre-processing,
MUX Legacy-M/H TS, Processing, Convolutional Coding ) and receiver complaint with the standard
ATSC M/H (working in close contact with American partners).

Nov. 2007- Software Engineer, Elife International Srl., Portoferraio, Italy.
Feb. 2008 Designed and developed a complete frequency-hopping system (transmitter/receiver) in ISM band
(Assembler, VHDL and C were used);
Designed a full-duplex system using the power line communication technique (Orcad and PSpice
were used).

May 2006- Graduate Research Assistant, EMC Lab, University of Pisa , Pisa, Italy.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN January 12, 2016

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently defended my Ph.D. thesis in electrical engineering in the Lane Department of Computer
Science and Electrical Engineering at West Virginia University under the direction of Dr. Matthew C. Valenti.
I have very strong analytical and programming skills, and a deep interest in research and applied problems in
the field of wireless communications, (digital) signal processing, information theory, probability and statistics.
I was very enthusiastic when I read about this opening, since I believe I am a good fit for it having the proper
experience and background to provide my contribution to your team.
Throughout my academic studies and work experience, I have not only acquired the necessary technical skills
to independently face challenging problems of different nature, but also the ability to work in a team through
group projects by positively and actively contributing to group achievement. During my academic career, I
have conducted my studies in two different countries (Italy and USA), and because of this I have become a
very flexible and cultural sensitive person, who adapts quickly to a new work environment.
I have a very unique and broad academic background. During my undergraduate studies and my MEng.
degree, I have acquired a deep knowledge of VLSI and RF systems and their design for practical applications,
together with a strong understanding of antenna design, communications and signal theory. My intellectual
curiosity and desire to learn has led me to pursue a Ph.D., during which I have been primarily focusing on: 1)
interference modeling and optimization of modern wireless systems; 2) design of energy-efficient algorithms
for distributed estimation of parametric fields in wireless sensor networks; 3) design of scheduling algorithms
for efficient resource allocations in modern wireless cellular networks, including Cloud-RAN architectures.
During my academic research activity I have published more than 20 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and
international conferences and I have co-authored a book chapter.
Between my MEng. degree and my Ph.D., inspiration and enthusiasm well up in me when I was at work. For
two years as an employee in the R&D department of SSBT Spa, I have built an array of valuable skills in the
professional world, particularly in the area of digital video broadcasting, and coding theory. During this time,
my experiences have contributed significantly to my growth and, I have engaged successfully in two main
projects. After a short training period, I independently developed a system-level simulator complaint with
the DVB-T2 and ATSC M/H standard and new encoding and decoding algorithms. I also attended several
international meetings with other business partners during the process of standardization and development.
The outcome of my work resulted particularly useful in both the performance evaluation and testing of the
systems and their implementation in hardware, which led to product line.
During both my academic and work experience, I have learned how to work under time constraints, how
to visualize abstract concepts and apply them to industrial projects for real time applications. I have a
balanced view of my interests, potential contributions and priorities. I approach all my work with focus and
commitment to complete the tasks on time and to fulfill expectations. I am accustomed to a fast-paced
environment and work very well under pressure. I am used to handling multiple tasks, and I am self-motivated.
I have deep capabilities in problem solving with a strong willingness to learn. I am prepared to contribute the
skills I have acquired during my work experience, classes and academic research to your team.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Salvatore Talarico
