Dear Dr Tait

ACTION: Introduce yourself and why you are writing; refer to how you got the person’s contact details and what
attracted you to the employer.
I have recently graduated from Summit University with a 2.1 in chemistry (MChem). During my
degree I developed a keen interest in polymers and their applications through studying related
courses, and I’m eager to find a research role within the polymer technology industry. I recently
contacted your HR manager, Mrs Jensen, who suggested that I write to you direct to explore
whether any opportunities existed within your research group.

Throughout my degree I have kept up to date with advances in the commercial applications of
polymers through Polymers Today and other related journals. I recently read about the cutting-
edge work Polymer Dynamic have been doing in the field of electro-optic polymers and this
sparked my imagination for possible future applications. I would really appreciate the opportunity
to work with professional researchers in this area, and start out in an organisation like Polymer
Dynamic that is leading the way in this field.

ACTION: In this example the following paragraphs are general. Pull out specific examples of your skills,
experience or extra-curricular activities from your CV that demonstrate your suitability for the employer and the
area of work.
I have enclosed my CV, which outlines my work experience to date and my academic
background. I gained over 85% in both my polymer chemistry and advanced polymers courses.
I also completed a materials characterisation project using advanced thermal techniques during
my final year. This included a significant research component in which I felt I excelled and really
enjoyed. My personal tutor and project supervisor are both happy to provide you with references
relating to my practical skills and academic ability.

In addition to my academic achievements, I believe that I have very good general skills
demonstrated through my extra-curricular activities and the work experience I have gained
through part-time work and summer employment. I am well organised, quick to learn new
processes and techniques, and I believe that I have the initiative and level of rigor needed to do
well in research. I would be committed to developing my skills to support and contribute to the
work of Polymer Dynamic’s research.

ACTION: Make your close positive and keep your options open. You may want to include your availability if, for
example, you are looking for summer work experience. Give yourself an action to follow up your application.
I hope that my CV is of interest to you, and that it will be possible to arrange a time to meet with
you soon to find out more about the work of your group and to explore any opportunities for me to
join your team. I will give you a call within the next week to see what is possible.

Yours sincerely

David Brice
