ABSTRACT
Home automation or smart home is the residential extension of building
automation and involves the control and automation of lighting, heating,
ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), appliances, and security. Modern
systems generally consist of switches and sensors connected to a central
hub sometimes called a "gateway" from which the system is controlled
with a user interface that is interacted either with a wall-mounted
terminal, mobile phone software, tablet computer or a web interface.
In this project Bluetooth module is interfaced to a microcontroller. This
Bluetooth receives the commands from the Android application device
using wireless communication. The program which is written to the
microcontroller communicates with Bluetooth module serially to receive
the commands. Microcontroller switches the electrical loads
automatically based on the commands received from the Bluetooth.

ABOUT BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over
short distances (using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the ISM
band from 2.4 to 2.485 GHz) from fixed and mobile devices, and
building personal area networks (PANs). Invented by telecom
vendor Ericsson in 1994, it was originally conceived as a wireless
alternative to RS-232 data cables. It can connect several devices,
overcoming problems of synchronization.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
Home Automation usually is comprised of following main parts:

1. Main Controller
2. Interfaces
Main Automation Controller: The Main controller is usually a
microcontroller. There are some systems that do use an actual home
computer but these are usually not as reliable. The advantage to having
a separate controller is its focus is only on all of the Home Automation
tasks. The controller we use hooks up to your home network and can
access the Internet.

Interfaces(Touch Panels, Remotes, and Mobile Devices, Internet)

An Interface is the way you interact with the Home making an
automation controller. There are many types of interfaces. Here the
interface device is our mobile through which the SMS is sent. When a
message among the predefined set is sent byte mobile, it is received by
the GSM shield, then the message is transferred to the controller and
according to the code the desired task is carried out.

APPLICATIONS
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC): it is possible to
have remote control of all home energy monitors over the internet
incorporating a simple and friendly user interface.
Lighting control system
Appliance control and integration with the smart grid and a smart
meter, taking advantage, for instance, of high solar panel output in
the middle of the day to run washing machines.
Security: a household security system integrated with a home
automation system can provide additional services such as remote
surveillance of security cameras over the Internet, or central locking
of all perimeter doors and windows.
Leak detection, smoke and CO detectors
Indoor positioning systems
Home automation for the elderly and disabled
