Hello
My name is Jamie Oxtoby, Im 27, from Yorkshire,
England. I am currently living in Wellington, New
Zealand.

I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London

in 2012 in BA Design, having been awarded the
Second Class - Upper Division mark after the
three year course. I was then employed as a Design
Assistant at Kingstown Associates in England
for 2 years. I then went travelling to SE Asia and
Australia for over a year, and then I returned to the
company for 2 more years. Here I took on extra roles
in the photography studio, email newsletter design
and working remotely when I visited my anc in
America for 3 months at a time.

During my time at university I took part in a

number of work experience jobs in some large design
agencies in London. I have done some freelance
design work and wedding photography in my spare
time as well.

Final Year Studio Project

Trafferball - Can A Sport Be Extracted From Rioting?
This was a self-proposed brief about extracting a sport
from rioting and social unrest, that transmits the
cultural values of our society in the early 21st century.

I have done this by designing the sport of Trafferball, as

well as a ctional timeline to the year 2100, highlighting
its developments as a social activity and a cultural
reference of the present day. I want the sport to ignite
discussion about how and why these riots took place, as
well as perhaps being the next stage in popular sporting
activity, undertaken by general sports enthusiasts.
I want this sport to be a social
re-enactment of the communities,
however large or small, that were
affected by the riots and surrounding
protests. This can then develop into
a social event itself, highlighting the
behaviours and opinions of our current
society and thus become a means to
commentate or our present culture.

a glass bottle; Early sketching of ball; Development of throwing the Bottleball; Final design
of the Bottleball, Oxtoby, 2O12.
By forming a sport from a factual event,
it enables us to preserve the actions
taken by both sides, as well as our own
personal experience of the riots.

Studio Practice Briefs

The briefs I was given during my 3-year course allowed
for a lot of exibility in the design process as well as the
outcome. This was a multidisciplinary degree so any form
of design could be used to answer the brief.

Design Against Crime

London, England
Apr 2O11 - Sep 2O11
Part of the Innovation Centre at
Central St Martins University
(CSM), in the centre of London,
Design Against Crime (DAC) is a
practice-led research centre which
aims to design objects, services
and environments that address
both the users and abusers. It links
criminology to design problem setting
and solving for practical social
contexts.

The centres focus is based on the

understanding that design thinking
as well as design practice can and
should address security issues without
compromising functionality and other
aspects of performance, or aesthetics.
Grippa Clips and Stop Thief Chairs were
designed by DAC to reduce the number of
bag thefts in bars and cafes.

I designed the site map for Starbucks in

Victoria station - a particular hotspot for
bag theft, as well as a questionnaire that
was used to observe and record users of the
products to measure their efciency.

Kin Design
London, England
Jan 2O11 - Feb 2O11
I was chosen as part of a group of 4 to collaborate with
Kin, an interaction design and research company, and The
National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.

The project was to design a temporary and travelling

exhibition for primary school children that explains the
importance of using longitude in naval navigation.

Screen Printing/
Mixed Media Art
Throughout my school years and then later in my spare
time, I have had a great in interest in art and painting,
perhaps on an equal level to graphic design.

I received an A grade at A-level Art in England, and

then went on to an Art and Design Foundation Diploma,
at Hull College, where I achieved a Distinction - the
highest grade available.

I moved into a career in graphic design but I still use my

art skills in my work when I can.

Volunteering Work

My Christian faith has given me a

real passion for serving the homeless,
refugees and the poor. I have volunteered
in food banks in Australia and helped to
manage one in North Carolina.

I have completed a 160km walk in 4 days

in England to raise money for Refugee
Foundation Serbia, in Belgrade, where I
volunteered as an English teacher over
New Year 2017.

My wife and I have also recently

completed a 3,700km cycle ride from
Cairns to Melbourne, raising over
$3,200AUD for World Visions East
Africa Hunger Campaign.
About Me...
I love travelling and being outside and exercising. Recent
trips have included 3 months living in Fairbanks, Alaska
- hiking, rafting, camping and looking after my niece and
nephew there; backpacking through Cambodia, Vietnam
and Thailand; a road trip through Northeast USA and
Canada.

I am also a qualied soccer coach with a level-1 FA

qualication, and I was a Steward at Lords Cricket
Ground during my time in London. I have also taken a
course in archery and have completed 2 tandem skydives.

In the summer of 2012, I was lucky enough to be selected

out of 250,000 applicants to be one of the London Olympic
Games 70,000 volunteers. This role included working on
the main entrance of the Olympic Park as well as Wembley
Soccer Stadium, welcoming people to the event.

I got married to my beautiful wife Allie, who is from North

Carolina, in May 2017. We met whilst on a camping tour
of the outback in 2014.
