Integrated Services Digital Network

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) was developed by

ITU-T in 1976. It is a set of protocols that combines digital
telephony and data transport services. The whole idea is to
digitize the telephone network to permit the transmission of
audio, video, and text over existing telephone lines

The goal of ISDN is to form a wide area network that provides

universal end-to-end connectivity over digital media. This can be
done by integrating all of the separate transmission services into
one without adding new links or subscriber lines.

ISDN Standard Channels
To allow flexibility, digital pipes between customers
and the ISDN office (subscriber loops) are organized
into multiple channels

ISDN Standard channels are:

Bearer channels
Data channels
Hybrid channels

ISDN Standard Channels
Channel Data rate (Kbps) B Channels:
Digital data, Digital
Bearer (B) 64 voice, other low data rate
Data (D) 16, 64 information
Hybrid (H) 384, 1536,1920
D channels:
control signaling (in channel) for B channel (call establishment,
ringing, call interrupt, or synchronization). It carries control
signaling for all channels (common channel signaling)

H Channels:
High data rate applications (video, teleconferencing and so on)

B-ISDN Services
BISDN is the broadband counterpart to Integrated Services Digital Network, which provides digital
transmission over ordinary telephone company copper wires on the narrowband local loop.
