Suggestions for the further development of early writing skills
Teach them to write their own names.
Have the students label their own work, this teaches them about being independent and
responsible.
Reflections on Observation Task 4: Development of Early Writing Skills

1. What are developmental writing stages the majority of the students

in?

Most students are in the Emergent stage, some write in a string of letters, while
others enjoy copying letters or words from environmental print. Also, some
students are already writing using the Tripod grasp, and some are using the
Modified Tripod Grasp. Unfortunately, I was told that the school is focusing on
reading more than writing. Most students dont even know how to write their
names in English on their own.

2. Describe and explain two (2) suggested strategies that the teacher can use
to help the majority of the students within their developmental writing
stage.

- Provide flashcards with each students names, hand it out to them and allow
the students to copy it down until theyve got it memorized.

- Provide the students with English writing notebooks, where the students
would learn to trace the alphabets and write on the line. Students can either
work on it during English class or have it as a home-work. Every 1 or 2
weeks students will be tracing new alphabets and over time the teacher and
parents can flip the pages back to the beginning and see the students
progress, notice their improvement and compare it to their previous work.
