Reflections on Observation Task 3: Teaching Shared/Guided Reading

1. Which concepts about print (CAP), phonological awareness, letter

knowledge and or phonics did the teacher focus on?

- The teacher focused on pointing while reading, and while she was at it
Ms. Hamda would ask them questions such as whos bigger Titch or
Mary? and what sound does Titch begin with.

a) What did strategies/activities the teacher use to help the

students understand the concept being taught?

- The teacher asked the students closed-ended questions to keep them

engaged. Since story-time takes place at 12 and lasts for about 30
minutes before home-time, students dont have enough time to work
on activities.

2. Were there any initial/medial/final sounds, punctuation, sight words or

word families that were covered during the lesson? If they were, select
(a); if they were not, select (b).

a. What was the purpose of teaching these concepts? Explain its

importance.

- The teacher used the look and say approach, she would point at a word
and say it out loud. The purpose of teaching these concepts is for the
students to be able to sight words and recognize them and understand the
concept of different sizes.
