PREFACE

Welcome to the sixth issue of THE DAWN!

THE DAWN is a magazine that peel the beauty of Indonesia.

THE DAWN was born at the initiative of Mustika Purwandari and
Khairani Dian Anisa. The word DAWN is chosen as the name of
this magazine as a representation of the rise of Indonesias tourism.

In this edition, we offer you some simple yet interesting articles

that discover the beauty of Kudus. Kudus, which means Holy, is the
second smallest cty in the Middle Java in terms of its areas. However,
this small city has numerous amazing places to visit. Not to men-
tion its special dishes. For you, who wants to add some more pho-
tos on your Instagram, Kudus offers you some photogenic places.

This magazine is not just two persons work. It is the work

of a team. As the chiefs of editoral staff, we would like to
thank our solid team for every hardwork they have done.

KUDUS
Kudus is located at Pantura Street
between Semarang and Surabaya, its about
50 kilometers from Semarang City. Kudus
city is restricted by Pati city in the east,
Grobogan and Demak city in the south,
Jepara city in the west and north. Kudus
City is divided into nine sub-districts there
are Kudus, Bae, Gebog, Dawe, Mejobo,
Jekulo, Undaan, Kaliwungu, and Jati. In
Gebong and Dawe, the areas are dominated
by Muria Mountain, the only Mounth in the
north java region. The central of government
is located at Kudus. Because of the number
of sub-district Kudus is the second smallest
city in Central Java after Surakarta with its 5
sub-district.

The name Kudus comes from Ara-

bic that means Holy. The history of Ku-
dus is correlated with Sunan Kudus and
Sunan Muria, they are two of Wali Songo
who spread Islam in Kudus Area. One of
the Sunan Kudus heritage is Al-Aqsa Ku-
dus Mosque (Menara Mosque) that built in
1549, beside that another fact of Sunan Ku-
dus acculturation of Islam and Hindu, Killing
the cow is impolite for Kudus people mostly,
because before Islam came most of Kudus
people were Hindu. The behavior is used to
respect the Hindu. Based on Local Regula-
Although Kudus only has a small area, but
this city can be included into an Industrial City.
There are so many factories in Kudus. For exam-
ple there are big industry for cigarette and paper.
For cigarette industry, there are some cigarette big
factories like Djarum , Sukun, and Nojorono. Espe-
cially for Djarum, this is the biggest cigarette fac-
tory in Indonesia. This company usually become a
sponsor of many big events in Indonesia like con-
cert, education, and sport. For paper industry there
is a big factory in Kudus, named Pusaka Raya also
known Pura. Pura usually produces paper for ru-
piah money and ujian nasional, like UN 2012.
 INSIGHT
THE LEGENDARY LIEM SWIE KING
Liem Swie King was born on 28 February 1956
in Kudus. He is a former Indonesian badminton player
who excelled from the late 1970s through the mid-
1980s. He won the All England in 1978, 1979 and 1981.
Along with Morten Frost (Denmark), Han Jian and
Luan Jin (China), and Prakash Padukone (India), he was
one of the worlds leading singles players of that era.
A world level player in mens doubles as well as mens
singles, he was known for the ferocity of his jumping
smash.
His parents were Ng Thian Poo and Oei See Moi
from Fujian. He was the only son of 8 children. During
elementary school, he studied at Sekolah Tionghoa,

and later moved to SD Negeri Demaan II in 1965. In
1974, he changed his name to Guntur in order to accept
government instruction.
Liem won Central Java badminton championship
at the age of 15. In November 1972, he participated in
First Djakarta Badminton Open Tournament. It was his
first international tournament. Three years later, he won
Moenadi Cup, the Central Java Governor Cup. In 1973,
he strengthened Central Java on Pekan Olahraga Nasional
VIII and reached the final. After that in the same year, he
won Kejuaraan Dunia Bulu Tangkis Piala Garuda (Garuda
Cup Badminton World Championship) in Tegal
While in senior high school, in early 1974 he won
national championship. In the same year he participated in
All England for the first time. In 1976 and 1977 he became
the runner-up. Liem won the prestigious All-England Men
Singles Championships in 1978, 1979 and 1981 during a
six-consecutive-year run to the finals (19761981) of what
was then perhaps the worlds most prestigious badminton
tournament. He was the runner-up at the then triennial
World Championships in both 1980 and 1983 to fellow
Indonesians Rudy Hartono and Icuk Sugiarto respectively.
He was a member of the Thomas Cup winning Indonesian
teams of 1976, 1979, and 1984, playing both singles and
doubles on the latter two occasions. He also played in the
Thomas Cup in the years 1982 and 1986. He was a bronze
medalist in the mens doubles together with Hariamanto
Kartono at the 1985 IBF World Championships in Calgary.
He retired from badminton in 1988, and now owns
a health spa in Jakarta.

The Menara Kudus Mosque or Al-Aqsha Mosque is located in Kudus
in the Indonesian province of Central Java. Dating from 1549, it is
one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia, built at the time of Islams
spread through Java. The mosque preserves the tomb of Sunan Ku-
dus, one of the nine Islamic saints of Java (the Wali Sanga), and it is
a popular pilgrimage point.
It preserves pre-Islamic architectural forms such as old Javanese
split doorways, ancient Hindu-Buddhist influenced Majapahit-style
red brickwork, and a three-tired pyramindal roof. The most unusual
feature is the brick minaret on which a pavilion shelters a large skin
drum (bedug) which is used to summon the faithful to prayer instead
of the more common muezzin.

Mothel waterfall is a beautiful waterfall in Muria
Mountain in Kudus. Monthel is located in Dawe district. It
is about 18 KM from the center of Kudus.
Monthel is about 25 meters height with a hard rock
cliffs and a variety of natural vegetation in the surround-
ing areas. Its clear and fresh water attract may tourist to
feel the water

Rahtawu Village is located on the top area of Ge-
bog District, Kudus. This village offers you stunning
scenery of green valley and fresh river.
 Cook & Bite
Ingredients:
1 chicken
2 Liter of water
4 cm ginger, crushed
12 cloves of red onion, thinly sliced
Item 5 eggs, boiled
100 grams of bean sprouts, hot eduh with IAR
6 tablespoons celery, sliced
2 tablespoons cooking oil
3 tablespoons sweet soy sauce
Spices:
8 cloves of garlic
1 teaspoon cumin, toasted
1 teaspoon coriander, toasted
8 pieces of pecans, toasted
2 cm turmeric, roasted
1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 tsp powdered joy
soy sauce: 8 pieces of green chillies, 3 cloves garlic
and saute briefly
puree, mixed with 100 ml of soy sauce.
Steps:
1. Boil chicken, add ginger and lemongrass, and cook
until chicken is tender, remove from heat. reserve
broth soup.
2. Heat oil, saute bawangmerah and spices until fra-
grant. Put into the broth. add the soy sauce and bring
to a boil.
3. Shredded-shredded chicken and set aside.
4. Prepare a bowl, grammar sprouts, chicken siwir,
and boiled eggs. pour sauce in a bowl, sprinkle with
chopped celery leaves.
5. Serve the soup with soy sauce.
Ingredients:
1 chicken

5 large size rod Green Chili
2 pieces of onions
20-30 pcs Cayenne pepper
200 grams of star fruit Vegetables
Thick coconut milk 1 liter
Basil leaves
3 pcs Salam leaves
1 banana leaves as the wrapper
Galangal
10 onions
5 medium size of garlic
galingale, ginger, nutmeg and coriander
Steps:
All seasoning ingredients (red onion, garlic, kencur
ginger, coriander and turmeric) mashed into one.
Chickens that have been cut to taste put into place big
enough. Pour the spices on top, flatten the surface of
her chickens.
Add salt and squeeze squeeze condiments - the sea-
soning to chicken meat. Do not use force too large so
as not to damage his flesh.
Turn a large frying pan over medium heat. Put all the
ingredients above.
After that, enter the star fruit vegetables that are in
pieces, onion, chili, green chili, lemon grass, onion
and coconut milk little by little. Gently stir evenly
until the meat feels quite tender.
Prepare banana leaves that had been cleaned. Medium
size pieces. Love basil leaves at the base of leaves,
sprinkle with a little chicken broth plus ripe above.
Ith wrap neatly. Its as good as using a toothpick or a
stick to keep it safe.
Steam over medium heat about 35 to 45 minutes.

you can taste the truly sensation of Soto
Kudus. You can add egg satai, or fried
mashed potato as the complement of
Soto Kudus.

Sari Rasa Restaurant is one of the famous

restaurant that serves Garang Asam. It
is located onAgilkusumadya St. No 20
Kudus. It opens from 7 A.M to 9 P.M. To
taste its phenomenal Garang Asam, just
pay Rp 17500 to the cashier. Some well-
known people has witnessed its spicy yet
delicious sensation.

KRETEK DANCE
Kretek dance was inspired by the
creation of Kretek cigarettes
in Kudus. This dance tells the
cigarette-making process.
Its creator, Endang and Su-
priyadi have a dance class,
named Puringsari. The theme of
this dance is taken from how to
fold the cigarette, how to trim
the end of a cigarette (membat-
il), and how to pack it.
This dance represents the
steps of making a cigarette.
Starting from how to choose a
good tobacco. Then, the mbatil
worker cuts the tip of the ciga-
rette. Afterwards, the worker
brings the cigarettes to a fore-
man to be checked. When check-
ing out the cigarette, a foreman
sometimes put up a frightening
or even smiling expression.

To add the atmosphere of
harmony in this dance, it
is accompanied by Javanese
gamelan pelog type lancar-
an, coupled with a Kinanthi
Kota Kretek song that ac-
companied by terbang pa-
pat, jedor, saron, slentem,
bonang, demung, kendang
ciblon, kendang, ben and ke-
tipung.
