SH ARC-M3-HUB Description Version 04.00

1. Overview
The SH ARC-M3-HUB is a modular active ARCNET HUB with up to 3 bi-
directional data channels (called ports in the following). The SH ARC-
M3-HUB supports the implementation of expanded ARCNET networks in
industrial settings. The entirely modular concept allows the use of a wide
variety of transfer media.
It regenerates completely the received signal including the signal level
as well as phase distortions. Thus it allows practically unlimited
expansion of ARCNET networks. Selecting between the various port
modules allows the use of a variety of transfer media such as coax
cables, fiber optics and twisted pair cables. The bit rate is set
automatically within the range of 19kBps to 10 Mbps.

5.2 Setting data rates

Data rate settings of the SH ARC-M3-HUB are done automatically. If and
when the data rate was detected correctly the green LOCK LED will be
on continuously. Until the correct data rate is found the LED will flash
about every 2 seconds.

Page 7
SH ARC-M3-HUB Description Version 04.00

5.3 Indicators
The SH ARC-M3-HUB offers a variety of possible diagnoses helpful at
start-up or during operations. The network status is continuously
checked parallel to all other hub functions.

Front View

5.3.1 Activity LED at port module

A green LED per channel indicates that a signal is being received at that
channel. The brightness of the LED depends on the volume of the data
traffic.
Note: Activity is defined as data traffic at a port that is being processed
by the SH ARC-M3-HUB. When data is being received by port 2, f. e.,
while port 1 has been selected as active port, this will NOT activate the
indicator LED at port 2.
In normal operation no reconfiguration cycles the LEDs light up
continuously. Again, the brightness of the LEDs indicates the volume of
the data traffic.

Page 8
SH ARC-M3-HUB Description Version 04.00

5.3.2 Status LED at port module

A red LED indicates various statuses. They are defined by the global
LEDs on the hub module. F. e., the status LED on port 1 together with
the RECON LED indicates that a reconfiguration burst [1], [2] has been
detected on port 1.

5.3.3 POWER LED

The green LED indicates that +5V supply is present.

5.3.4 RECON LED

The red RECON LED indicates a reconfiguration burst had been
recognized. The red status LED at the respective port indicates the port.

A reconfiguration burst [1],[2] starts to rebuild the ARCNET network. In

normal operations they are triggered by newly arriving nodes. With
instable networks such as low signal levels, reflections on the coax
cable, defective participants etc., these bursts may also occur during
current operations. This points immediately to the port that has detected
the RECON.

5.3.5 HIT ERROR LED

During transmitting the system automatically checks if the number of
sent impulses agrees with the number of received signals per port. If that
is not the case it may have the following reasons:

- A hub port may have an electrical short

- The transceiver of a hub port might be defective, f. e., due to
lightning etc.
- A port module is operated at an impermissible bit rate (f. e., SH
KOAX-M with 5 or 10 MBps)

The red status LED indicates the respective port.

Note: Automatic checks only occur if and when at least 2 ports feature
active nodes!

5.3.6 TX ERROR LED

This indicator LED shows that no more data are being sent from the
internal buffer. That can only occur if and when bit rates deviate
extremely from the set point. It is also an indication that some nodes do
not agree with ARCNET specifications.

5.3.7 ALERT ERROR LED

All ARCNET protocol elements feature a starting sequence of 8 logical
ones followed by a zero. Physical problems on the network such as
Page 9
SH ARC-M3-HUB Description Version 04.00

(semi-) defective nodes may falsify this sequence: the status LED will
flicker. The red status LED on the port indicates the respective port. The
LED remains lit until a correct package is read again.

5.3.8 LOCK LED

This LED indicates that a valid bit rate had been recognized.
If and when the LED flickers every two seconds no valid bit rate could be
read. Data transfer via the ports is then blocked. Thus data traffic via the
hubs is impossible. That can happen if and when
- one or several network participants work with an invalid data rate
- network participants may feature different bit rates
- very strong distortions on the cable such as spikes etc.
- no activity detected on the port after switching on the SH ARC-M3-
HUB.

5.3.9 COAX DISABLED LED

This LED indicates that a bit rate smaller than 2.5 MBps was read and at
least one port module of the type SH COAX-M-x or SH-TWP-M-x is
present. Sending of data via these port modules will be blocked to avoid
damage of the modules. This does not account for all other port module
types.

5.4 Cascading of SH ARC-M3-HUBs

With the implementation of extensive ARCNET networks it might make
sense to connect several HUBs sequentially or to cascade them.
Depending on the functional concept of most HUBs in the market, the
maximum number of sequentially connected devices is limited. This is, f.
e., because jitters generated by the devices data regenerations may
distort the timing pattern (reading of data signals).

The SH ARC-M3-HUBs let you cascade any number of devices

regarding data signal jitters: a new concept allows regeneration of the
signal quality as well as the regeneration of the timing pattern. Even with
signals that feature a jitter caused by signal distortions in the cable the
SH ARC-M3-HUB regenerates the timing pattern and outputs jitter-free
data streams.

The regeneration of the timing pattern is important in extensive ARCNET

networks; also important is the delay of data signals through cable- and
Hub delays. Since the predefined ARCNET protocol features so-called
timeout checks the maximum occurring delay between two participants
must not exceed predetermined values. However, it is possible to adapt
the maximum permissible delay time through software settings at the
Page 10
SH ARC-M3-HUB Description Version 04.00

ARCNET controllers to the network extension (Extended Timeout). The

maximum permissible delay should be set greater than the maximum
occurring real signal delay between two participants in the network. The
SH ARC-M3-HUB features a delay of less than 2.5 Bit (at 2.5 Mbps)
from port to port, which is close to the physically possible limit.

Calculate the minimum timeout time to be set according to the following

formula:

Timeout = S * ( 2 * ( TCable + N * THub ) + TRESPONSE )

S: Safety factor typically 1,2
TCable : max. signal delay calculate between most
remote network participants
with ~ 200m/s signal speed and cable length
acc. to TCable = cabel length/signal speed
N: number of sequentially connected SH ARC-M3-HUBs
THub: delay of a Hub with maximally 2.5 Bit acumulate acc.
to THub = 2.5 Bit/data rate, data rate in Bit/sec
TRESPONSE: max. response time of an ARCNET participant
calculate with response time typically: 32 Bit
TRESPONSE = 32Bit/data rate, data rate in Bit/sec

With a given timeout time calculate the maximum number of cascadable

SH ARC-M3-HUBs with the reversed formula:

N = ( (Timeout/S - TRESPONSE)/2 TCABLE)/THub

Example:
Data rate: 2,5Mbps
Cable: 1200m max: length
Timeout: 74,7s (Standard Timeout)
Safety: S = 1,2

N = ((74,7s/1,2 - 12,8s)/2 - 6s)/1.0s = 18,7 => rounded 18

SH ARC-M3-HUBs

Thus, 18 Hubs can be cascaded for this configuration without exceeding

the Standard Timeout.

With a timeout configured to 298,4s (next higher level up):

Page 11
SH ARC-M3-HUB Description Version 04.00

N = ((298,4s/1,2 - 12,8s)/2 - 6s)/1.0s = 111,9 => rounded 111 SH

ARC-M3-HUBs

With increasing the timeout time by only one level already 111 Hubs can
be cascaded. That is sufficient for almost any possible configuration.
Any port may be used when cascading.
