Fall Semester 2014-2015
Course Description:
The Engineering geology course intends to give the student a comprehensive idea about the
formation and existence of minerals and rocks together with their types and use. The student
will learn how to distinguish between different types of aggregates and their testing procedure
and how to investigate any site for construction purpose. The concept of ground water origin
and Occurrence will be discussed.
1. The student must be familiar with earth structure, its core, mantle and crust.
2. The student must be able to distinguish between minerals, metallic, non-metallic
and to understand their properties and their classification.
3. The student must understand the different types of rocks, their classifications and
the rocks forming minerals and the use of rocks in construction of buildings and
roads.
4. The student must be familiar with the site investigation and exploration methods
and the in situ-testing.
5. The student must understand the ground water occurrence and to be familiar
with the different types of aquifers and the prevention of ground water
contamination.
6. The student must be familiar with the concept of mass movement and measures
to prevent it.
7. The student has to understand the earthquake mechanism and the types of waves
it generates.
