Practice 3

Procedure

1. The Sketcher icon was selected to start the Sketcher workbench.

2. xy plan was selected to define the sketch plane.
3. First, a circle was created from the origin by clicking the circle icon with the diameter
28.575mm.
4. By using circle icon the second circle was sketched with the diameter 44.45mm.
5. The length was taken 58.725mm from the origin at the positive x-axis.
6. At the length 58.725mm the line of y-axis is sketch.
7. The arc was sketch by selecting the arc function. The arc was sketch from the origin
with radius 58.725mm.
8. The interception was occurred between 58.725mm x-axis line with the arc with radius
58.725mm. At the interception the centre to sketch arc tangent for ellipse shape was
determined.
9. At the centre the first arc tangent is sketch by using the arc function with the radius
11.125mm.
10. From the origin the 40 angle was taken at the positive x-axis and the line was
sketched to sketch another arc tangent with radius 11.125mm.
11. Step 7 is repeated.
12. The interception was occurred between angle 40 line with the arc with radius
58.725mm. Then another centre to sketch arc tangent with radius 11.125mm was
determined.
13. At the centre another arc tangent was sketched using the arc function with radius
11.125mm.
14. The arc tangent was connected by trim function to sketch a line connecting the arc
tangent.
15. The ellipse part was sketched.
16. Step 9-14 was repeated to sketch another ellipse shape with the radius 22.225mm of
the arc tangent at the same centre.
17. The 147.422mm length was taken at the point of 58.725mm length at positive x-axis
to the left side in the x-axis direction.
18. At the 147.422mm length the arc tangent was sketched by selecting the arc function
with 11.1mm, then the same function was used to sketch another arc tangent with
radius 19.05mm.
19. Step 17-18 was repeated with the different length which the length was taken is
122.022mm.
20. The line function was selected and the line was sketched to connect the arc tangent.
21. Then at the positive y-axis the 47.625mm length from the origin was taken.
22. At the 47.625 mm, the 19.05mm length was taken from the negative x-axis.
23. At the point 19.05mm length and 47.625mm height, the circle was sketched by select
the circle icon with the radius 19.05mm.
24. Step 23 was repeated with the 41.275mm radius of the circle.
25. The corner function was selected to sketch a corner with radius 15.875mm. To sketch
the corner, the circle with radius 41.275mm and the arc tangent at the 40 angle of
ellipse with radius 22.225mm was selected by clicking at the part. Then the corner
was automatically sketched between the parts.
26. For another corner the step 25 was repeated with the radius of the corner is 44.45mm
and the corner was connected with the radius 22.225mm circle with the ellipse shape
at the point 147.422mm along x-axis.
27. At the origin a circle was sketched using the circle function with a radius 34.925mm.
28. The corner function was used to sketch a corner with a radius 15.875mm between a
34.925mm circle and the arc tangent with a radius 22.225mm at the point 58.725mm
at the positive x-axis.
29. The line was sketched at the point 88.697mm and connected with a radius 34.925mm
circle by selecting the line function.
Problems statement

From the sketch, there are several problem when using the Catia to sketch the Practice 3
which causes some difficulties and the sketches could be done properly. Firstly the unit for
the sketches. In the module given the practice is in inches. The problem is in Catia the
common unit was used is in S.I unit which is in mm. Next, in this practice there are many
corner need to be sketch. Its causes some difficulties in term of length and the radius.
Besides need to have two part of sketches to sketch the corner. Then, the lack of
understanding the centre or point to sketch the part. Since in this practice, there are many
parts need to be sketch. Others problem is the accuracy of the measurement. If there any
measurements that inaccurate measurement it will causes there other part will not be sketch at
accurate place. The lack of mathematical skills will cause some measurement will be
inaccurate.

Problems solving

Based on the problem that we faced, there had come the solution to overcome the problem
in order to sketch an accurate sketching and to determine the accurate point or centre to start
a sketching. Firstly, to solve the problem regarding the unit use in the sketch. The way to
overcome the problem, we need to find a setting in the Catia in order to convert the unit. In
this practice the module given is in inches. Therefore we go to the setting in the Catia and
changes the unit. Other than that we can convert the unit manually by using the calculation.
In the catia its using the S.I unit which is in mm. Then we convert the unit from inches to
mm which is 1 inches equal to 25.4mm. To prevent the problem regarding to the place of the
centre and a point of the part, we need to sketch the part from the origin. Then arrange the
sketch part by part. Other than that, before we start the sketch make sure we well understand
the module and need to do some calculation. For the corner, we need to sketch 2 part to
connecting the corner between the part. We need to click that part and select the corner
function to connect the part with the given radius. Lastly we are able to use constraint
function in order to get an accurate measurement.
Conclusion

At the end of the practice, we are able to arrange the parts accurately. Besides we had gain a
better understanding and skills because in this practice there are many part need to be sketch.
Besides, its improve our mathematical skills which in this practice need more calculation in
measurement to determine the centre and the point for part that need to be sketch.
