Indications for Partial Denture Therapy
Partial Edentulism
So that means an overwhelming population of patients are
candidates for RPDs.
The challenge with any RPD is proper diagnosis, treatment
planning, design and recall.
Managing patient expectations can be dificult when assessing
the possibilities for achieving satisfactory esthetic and
functional outcomes.

So Why Dont More People Get Partials?
5
But Cant RPDs be Esthetic?

Video of unbreakable denture
A patient in a local dental ofice broke a flex partial in half (it was
a sample for patient education purposes, not an actual patients
personal prosthesis). This gives me room for reasonable doubt
regarding the unbreakable claim.

Disadvantages
25
What Does The Literature Say?
Flexible partials are highly esthetic but wear out much faster than
metal framework partial dentures do. Moreover, they are very
dificult to repair, usually requiring replacement.
26
What about Hybrid materials?

Partials are a Problem, Period
Only 40% of RPD patients are wearing their prosthesis afer 5 years.
Why?
An improperly designed denture can result in periodontal instability of
abutment teeth, damage to hard and sof tissues or damage to the
prosthesis.
Even a properly designed RPD could have abutment teeth that became
periodontally involved for non-prosthetic reasons or could have
changes to the tissue or underlying bone.
It is abundantly clear that no matter what kind of partial you are
making, treatment planning, proper design/fabrication and recall are
paramount to successful clinical outcomes.
30
So If Flexible Partials are weak, why not just make
a flipper?
31
So What Does This All Mean?
Recommendations:
For the best longevity of the prosthesis, you save money by getting well-designed, high quality
metal framework partial dentures. Flexible partials are more expensive and wear out faster.
Theyre hard to fix, too.
If you are interested in the ultimate party teeth then a flexible partial is a fantastic option.
Alternative hybrid materials are on the market and worth consideration as well.
Experience and judgment are critical to a good outcome with any partial and especially with a
flexible partial.
Flexible partials are not recommended as a permanent prosthesis at this time.
Hybrids have a better clinical prognosis than flexible partials.
Flexible partials stain with relative ease and require meticulous cleaning that is technique
sensitive to prevent increased roughness of the surface.
More research is needed and innovation required in order to create better clinical outcomes for
RPD therapy.

But metal frame RPDs are DINOSAURS...
