I dont know about you, but when the temperature drops, I get the
urge to escape. Luckily, this season we neednt venture far to fulfill our sense of
adventure. Whatever your destination, chances are its on designers lists of inspirations for
spring. From Moroccos Atlas Mountains to Frances Palace of Versailles to
Chinas ancient cities, no locale was out of reach, and there were the exotic
embroideries, Baroque lace touches, and cultural symbols to prove it. Its a powerful reminder
of fashions ability to transport and excite usno passport required. @ninagarcia

In the beauty world, hairstylist Chris McMillan is practically as famous as his A-list clients. Known for

The FIXER
Uber owes much of its rapid growth and global success to Austin Geidt.
Meet the 30-something who wrote the companys expansion playbook

the companys Advanced Technologies Group. Unofficially,

The ride-hailing apps meteoric rise is all Geidt has known as a working

companys fourth hire (it currently has 9,000 employees), joining long before
to Uber became a verb. In the years since, Uber has raised a jaw-dropping
$18 billion, valuing the company at an estimated $65 billionarguably more
than auto legends General Motors or Ford. I thought it was big when we raised
a million dollars, Geidt recalls. The definition of big keeps changing. The two
have matured in tandem, and Geidts story represents not only Ubers past, but
also where its headed.
Its tough to keep up with her whiplash-inducing trajectory. Shortly after
Geidt graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2010, she cold-
pitched Ubers then-CEO, Ryan Graves, with a self-made video featuring a
couple who each used the service to escape their awkward hookup. This was
years before the world got Uber, and it was clear she did, Graves says. How
would Uber fit into a one- to two-minute-pickup-time world? As a market-
ing intern, then a marketing manager, Geidt did everything from answer
customer-support calls to brainstorm with cofounder Travis Kalanick about
the companys expansion strategy.
In 2011, Geidt was promoted to head of launch, tasked with bringing the orig-
inal Uber black car service to new cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston,
Minneapolis, and Philadelphia. It was during this period that she created the
companys launch playbook. I took notes of absolutely everything I did, Geidt

The first time I saw Dita Von Teese perform was
during an absolutely fabulous Paris Fashion Week
party circa 2005. Her burlesque show was a new cult
8
sensation, and designers were practically falling all
over themselves to have her sit front row at their
shows and appear at their fancy fetes. Watching her
slink around the stage and dance in an oversize
champagne glass (!), I could see why: Between her Beauty Director
milky skin contrasted with onyx pinup-girl hair and ERIN F L AHERT Y
that tiny corseted waist, she was the epitome of retro glamour. Recently,
we connected via e-mail, where she explained that she was originally
drawn to the aesthetic because, as a mediocre-looking blonde girl from
a farming town in Michigan, I didnt feel very special; I couldnt fit into
the mainstream image of modern American beauty, so I liked the idea of
emulating the looks of classic Hollywood icons and vintage pinups.
Mediocre? Hardly! This month, Dita is back with an American tour (it
kicks off February 1 in Chicago; artoftheteese.com) that will no doubt
12 introduce a whole new generation to the art of burlesque. Whether you
make it there or not, this undeniably sexy slew of productswitness

now than ever before. So how do we, the

regular people, take advantage?
First, its important to understand what
great skin really looks like. Its dewy
without being greasysome shine is good,
though oil all over the T-zone is never
desirableand it appears smooth and
hydrated, says New York dermatologist Dr.
Whitney Bowe. What its not is matte. Flat
skin looks older, so even if you prefer a
matte look, thats fine, but you want to add
some sort of luminous sheen to a few key
points for it to look believable, explains
Los Angeles makeup artist Fiona Stiles.
A gorgeous complexion also has some
differentiation in tone. Bowe says its
natural to have color variation in different
areas of your face because of the pigmenta-
tion you get when the sun hits you. While
its not actually healthy (the discoloration
is caused by photodamage), the look of
implied leisure is still stylish. If you have
a sun-kissed appearancesome gentle
hyperpigmentation where rays would
naturally hit across the faceits desirable
in many cultures, Bowe points out.
Redness isnt necessarily a bad thing,
either, so long as its the look of a post-run
flush, not the ruddiness of broken
blood vessels.
To achieve all of the above, there are
factors to consider: the two most impor-
tant being how much (or how little)
makeup you want to put on and what
the lighting situation will be. With that
in mind, we asked the experts to share
some guidelines.

beware of powders, as they can catch on the tiny hairs that cover your face, blotching the
finish. Some of the easiest products to use are the new blurring primers and creams.
Applied in lieu of foundation, they make pores less noticeable, mask uneven texture, and
can even act as color correctors, depending on the formula. Beccas new primer has a
barely-there lavender hue that neutralizes the sallowness skin gets when youre tired, while
LOral Paris Rosy Tone Moisturizer contains a peony extract that works to help protect the

1 For the SELFIE ADDICT

We all know that luminous skin looks brilliant in photos, but dont get carried away with shimmery
2 foundations or highlighting products. Its all about bringing light into the center of your complexion
dont do your whole face! implores Stiles. For an easy update, she suggests applying your makeup
(or lack thereof) as you normally would, then dabbing a product like Revlons highlighting stick from
between your eyebrows to halfway down your nose and across your cheekbones.
If you dont want to deal with a two-step process, swap your usual foundation or tinted moisturizer for
a more radiant formula that gives skin an incandescent glow all over. Shiseidos new fluid foundation
with luminizing particles is a great option. Just remember to spot-powder areas that tend to get oily, like
4 your forehead and chin. Wet n Wilds new pressed powder is also good, because the pigments and oil-
blotting ingredients are micronized, so they wont cause flashbackthat whitish glow cast by some
makeup when hit directly with bright light. Or try Wunder2s destined-to-become-a-cult-classic bouncy
powder that promises to softly erase fine lines and pores for a high-res-friendly, retouched effect.

OFFICE
Lighting doesnt get any more unforgiving
than overhead fluorescents, yet 9-to-5 is
typically when you need to look most
effortless. The irony isnt lost on us. For
these tricky hours, your best bet is a
foundation that offers buildable coverage
(so you can use the minimum amount
necessary to cover flaws) and has an airy
formula that floats above lines and pores.
Cosmetic chemist Ginger Kings test:
Smear a bit of the product on your palm,
rather than the back of your hand. If the
tiny lines are less noticeable, its a keeper.

Finally, when youre in unkind lighting,
make sure the products you apply on top of
your foundation share the same texture so
that the two layers blend seamlessly,

creamy base, like the one from Maybelline,
then pair it with a similarly textured blush.

For a
NIGHT
OUT
Theres a time and place for extra effort,
and that would be after dark or at a big
event. That said, you dont want to look
like youre wearing a mask. Enter the
new kid in town: pigment drops. To
apply these concentrated doses of
skin-matching colorfrom brands like
Hard Candy, Clinique, and Isdinadd
any number of drops to existing prod-
ucts for customized coverage. For a
lighter touch, add one drop to your
moisturizer before applying. Need more
coverage? Use two or three drops with
the moisturizer, or add a few to your
regular daytime foundation to give it
more oomph.
Right about now, anyone with rosacea,
acne scars, vitiligo, or a birthmark is
probably thinking that, while these new
drops sound great in theory, theres no
way theyll cut it in practice. Luckily,
full-coverage foundation has also
improved in the past year. The base of
Laura Gellers new formula is enriched
with hydrators and vitamins, so it can hide
pretty much anything without looking
cakey, and makeup artist Kristofer Buckle
just came out with a stick foundation that
you can sheer out or layer up as needed.
And because a perfect color match is
especially important when youre dealing
with berpigmented formulas, Kat Von D
recently expanded her full-coverage
foundation with 13 new shades (that
makes a total of 30, if youre counting).
Regardless of the state of your skin
or the foundation you end up wearing

At the moment, Danes is more interested in laughing than crying.
Homeland is filming in New York this season (after stints in Berlin; Cape
Town, South Africa; and Morocco), which means Danes is on home turf.
New York is the greatest city on the planet as far as Im concerned, she
says. We filmed at Raouls in Soho the other day, and I went home for
lunch, and Hugh was there; it was bizarre in the best way.
Acting has always been Danes main passion, and theres a sense,
now that shes back in her hometown, of having come full circle. It was
here, growing up with artist parents in a loft on Crosby Street, that
Danes first realized she wanted to performan event she wryly refers
to as my first epiphany. Because Danes is a serious actress, its tempt-
ing to imagine this epiphany happening while watching Sophies Choice
or Masterpiece Theatre, but in fact it came while she was watching
Madonna. I was 5, and I was watching TV, and Madonna was dancing
onstage, and it occurred to me that that could be ones vocation, she
says. I was so excited, I started jumping up and down on the bed, and
I was like, Oh! Yes!
Herein lies the essential complexity of Danes charactershe shifts
effortlessly from brainy to bouncy, intense to playful, fragile to formi-
dable, nerd to glamour-puss. The woman contains multitudes. It is what
makes her a great actress.
Fortunately for Danes, she was born into the kind of family that took
things like her Madonna epiphany seriously. Her mom was a painter
who ran a day care center out of their home. Her dad was a photogra-
