Effectiveness of K to 12 programs as
Preparation for College Courses
A Research Proposal
Submitted by
Brian Felipe
To
The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years
of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High
School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop
lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills
development, employment, and entrepreneurship.
With changes in the curriculum and the two more years added to basic education,
colleges and universities may soon drop some subjects that are essentially remedial high
school courses, thereby shortening college to three years from the usual four years,
according to Education Secretary Armin Luistro.
Senior High School (SHS) covers the last two years of the K to 12 programs and
includes Grades 11 and 12. In SHS, students will go through a core curriculum and
subjects under a track of their choice.
SHS, as part of the K to 12 Basic Curriculum, was developed in line with the curriculum
of the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) the governing body for college and
university education in the Philippines. This ensures that by the time you graduate from
Senior High School, you will have the standard knowledge, skills, and competencies
needed to go to college.
2.2. Materials
The study uses questionnaires, surveys, data collection to have good result in
study.
Survey examine and record the area and features of (an area of land) so as to
construct a map, plan, or description.
Questionnaires a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers,
devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study.
2.3. Participants
The study need student who experience and feel senior high level as a k to 12
program prerequisites in college. The study wants to have participant either a grade 11
section or grade 12
3. Relevant Literature
The new K 12 curriculum guide requires all Filipino students to have one year of
kindergarten, six years of elementary schooling (grades 1 to 6), four years of junior high
school (grades 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school (grades 11 to 12). The K 12
curriculum is designed to enable graduates to join the work force right after high school,
and suitably prepare those who want to go on to higher education.
The new curriculum will also support college graduates seeking work abroad.
Developed countries, according to the Department of Educations (DepEd) briefer, view
the 10-year education cycle as insufficient.

The electives, or areas of specialization, will include academics for those who wish
to pursue higher studies, technical-vocational for those who want to acquire employable
skills after high school, and sports and arts for those who are inclined in the two fields.
Change is never easy, especially when it is about a big undertaking such as the
implementation of the new K-12 curriculum guide in the Philippines. It is high time,
however, that we join the rest of the world and improve the quality of our basic
education system and our graduates.
