LESSON 4

REVOLVE &
PATTERN
Objectives of LESSON 4:

1. Creating 3D model using revolved feature.

2. Detailing 3D model using patterning feature.

Prepared by NCM-2012 Page 1

In this lesson, a new option in creating 3D model for cylindrical and symmetry parts is
introduced using revolved feature. Also, models that have a number of similar shapes
on a surface can be produced easily using pattern function (circular pattern or linear
pattern).

Revolved feature
1. 3D model that has to be developed in this lesson is shown below.

2. Sketch half geometry of the 3D model.

Prepared by NCM-2012 Page 2

3. Create a single line and set as construction line. The line will function as revolve
axis.

4. Click Revolve boss/bas tool on features toolbar. In revolve parameters, select the
construction line as the revolve axis. Angle = 360 deg. Solidwork will
automatically preview the result of revolve. Click OK. A completed revolved
feature will be built and the feature will appear in feature manager design tree.
Save as REVOLVE.

Patterning
1. Using the REVOLVE part, the 3D model will be detailed up with a circular
pattern of holes.

2. Sketch a big circle (16mm dia) on the surface of the revolved part. Then, create
a small circle (2mm-dia) at any position on the big circle line.

3. Click Circular sketch pattern on Sketch toolbar. The circular pattern parameter
box will appear and select the small circle as the entities to pattern; number of
pattern is 8 with 360 deg.

4. Click Cut-Extrude on Feature toolbar. Select small circle as selected contours to
cut. The selected contours will be previewed. Click OK when all the circles
selected. A completed extrude cut feature will be built and the feature will
appear in feature manager design tree. Save as REVOLVE + PATTERN.

Exercise 3:
Based on orthographic view shown below, construct a 3D model.
