Chapter 1: Scope of the Study

1.1 Introduction

All the children have the right to be protected from violence, exploitation and abuse.
According to an article published by Unicef in March 2011, Violence, exploitation and
abuse are often practiced by someone known to the child, including parents, other family
members, caretakers, teachers etc. Millions of children across the world from all socio-
economic backgrounds, across all ages, religions and cultures suffer violence,
exploitation and abuse every day.
According to Unicef, Every five minutes a child dies as a result of violence. Anthony
Lake Executive Director of Unicef raised the question If we cant unite around
preventing violence against children, what in the world can we unite around? Many
people feel hesitant to speak about violence against children. And many children who
experience violence do not have confidence to speak out to tell a trusted adult.
Families hold the greatest responsibility for protecting children from all forms of
violence. But families can also be dangerous for babies and young children. Referring to
a world report published by Unicef by Paulo Sergio Pinhero (2006), it argues that,
Surveys from around the world suggest that physical violence against children in the
home is widespread in all regions for example, the estimated number of children
witnessing violence in the home is 40.7-88 million in South Asia.
This report discusses the various types of physical, psychological and sexual violence
that occur Maldivian Families. This report would also include the reasons that might have
being the cause for Violence in Children in Homes and families and the responses that
can be used to minimize the violence.
Referring to the latest news and updates in Maldives, child violence in homes and
families has being a serious issue in the country. Maldives is a country where hundred

percent of Muslim population lives and these kind of haram acts needs to eliminated and
the victims of these violence have to be given justice. We live in a globalized world with
differences in religion, culture, race, abilities etc. Despite of all these differences we all
are supposed to live in a violence free environment.

1.2 Problem Statement

According to the censes 2006 Children (0-17 years of age ) of the Maldives represent almost
40% of the population. (Pinhero, 2006) Argues that No violence against children is justifiable;
all violence against children is preventable he also mentioned that the studies confirm that
violence exists in every country of the world, despite of its cultural, religious, economic and
social background.

(Pinhero, 2006)The occurrence of violence against children by parents and other close family
members physical, psychological, and sexual, as well as deliberate neglect - has been
acknowledged and documented in recent decades. Between 133 and 275 million children are
estimated to witness domestic violence worldwide, the exposure of children to violence in their
homes are usually between parents or caused in the form of a physical, cruel or humiliating
punishments as well as in the form of sexual violence (Pinhero, 2006).

In a study published by unicef regarding situation of Children in Maldives it is mentioned that ,

The violence against Children Study (2010, unpublished) in the Maldives reported that 11.6%
OF Maldivian children (aged 4-late teens ) experience violence in a range of setting including in
the family, communities, schools and educational settings, in care and justice systems.

As, this report is based on violence against children in homes and families we will be focusing
this area. The main purpose of preparing this report is due to the prevalence of violence in homes
and families have being vastly increasing in Maldives according to the latest news. According to
admington online, In 2015 January 25 ,a death of 3 year old toddler named Mohamed Ibthihaal
was found unconscious in the sitting room of a house in Rakeedhoo, having suffered multiple
brutal injuries at his body. His mother Afiya has accepted that she had physically abused and

beaten Ibthihaal several times. Apart from this , Referring to an article published in Mihaaru.com
(September 2017) recently a 75 year old men was claimed for sexual abuse of four girl children
in the same family in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll . The 75 year old men abused the first child of the family
when she was 14 years old.

As stated by a report published by WHO (World Health Organization) regarding Maldives, Girls
child sexual abuse appears to be perpetrated by family members (48%) . Acquaintants (26%)
and strangers (26%). This also clears that Maldivian children have huge risk of sexual violence
in families.

Relating to these cases, Violence in homes and families is becoming a serious issue in Maldives.
Therefore, it is important to find ways to stop these crimes and find the reasons for these kinds of
acts. Apart from the sexual abuse or death which occurs due to violence a slap of an angry parent
or harsh words or some form of punishments are also considered as abusive acts which need to
be taught to families. Therefore, another reason for preparing this report is to make parents and
families aware of this and provide information of acts that can be reflected as a form of abuse to
the child.

Theoretical background (theoretical framework)/Literature Review

Here the theoretical background to the problem area is presented.
Discuss the findings from other studies
If we are using hypotheses or priori assumptions, there has to be a proper
reasoning with the help of previous studies.

Methodology
In this section we inform the reader of our research design and why a particular
design is used.
We should inform the reader about our primary and secondary sources of data
along with arguments and justifications.
When discussing the primary sources, we should explain how we collected
information and discuss our population and sampling and in the case of in-depth
interviews or focus group discussions explain how these were organized and
justify why these methods were used.

Findings or empirical study

This section is often a major part of the report as the findings are presented in
detail with supportive tables and figures.
We have to refer back to our research questions or hypotheses and present our
findings in accordance with these in a systematic, structured and logical manner.

Conclusions and recommendations

You should state your conclusions systematically for each study objective,
research questions and check whether or not you have provided conclusions for
each of these.
If the data collected and the analysis do not provide enough information or
support required to draw conclusions, you should clearly state that.
It is important to b specific and concise.
Recommendations for future research or implications should be based on the
findings and conclusions.
