PROPOSAL FOR 900MM DIAMETER BORED PILES WITH ROCK SOCKET INTO GRANITE

Notes :

(1) The 900mm bored pile is designed to socket into the granite formation (RQD = 68%)
(2) From Peck, the allowable bearing stress for this RQD value rock is 10 MPa (ie. 10 N/mm 2)
(3) It is assumed that the total load capacity of the pile will be borne by the rock socket, thus
ignoring the above soil / shaft friction resistance.

(A) Structural properties of 900mm dia bored pile:-

Concrete grade = 35 N/mm2

Base area = 3.142 x 9002 /4 = 636,255 mm2
Circumference = 3.142 x 900 = 2,827.8 mm

Structural Capacity of the bored piles = 636,255 x 35 / 4

= 557 tons

To use working load :- Ft = 450 tons

(B) Geotechnical analysis of pile rock socket & length

Base bearing capacity Fb = 636,255 mm2 x 10 N/mm2

= 6,362,550 N
= 636 tons

Using safety factor = 3 ; Fb = 212 tons

From Figures 1 & 2 ;

Rock Socket Friction, fs = x x Quc (assume Quc = 10 MPa)

= 0.15 x 0.77 x 10 N/mm2
= 1.16 N/mm2

Rock socket frictional resistance, Fs = Ft - Fb

2,827.8 x ds x 1.16 = (450 - 212) x 10000 ; ds = socket length

ds = 725 mm

To provide rock socket length of 2 x diameter = 1800 mm.
