Equilibrium Problems

1. An equilibrium: H2 + I2 2HI (all gases) exists in a container. The concentrations

are: [H2]= 0.200M, [I2]= 0.100M, [HI]= 0.003M. Calculate Keq.

2. N2O4 decomposes to produce NO2 according to the reaction:

N2O4 2NO2. Keq=1.50 x 10-2 under certain conditions. If the concentration of N 2O4
under these conditions is 0.500M, what is the NO2 concentration?

3. At a certain temperature, the following equilibrium exists:

2H2(g) + O2(g) 2H2O(g). . At equilibrium, the concentrations of H2, O2 and H2O are
0.0200 M, 0.0150 M and 1.20 x 10-4 M respectively. Calculate Keq.

4. Given the following Keq values, in which case are products most favoured? Explain. a)
2.30 x 104 b) 2.30 x 10-4 c) 2.30

5. Consider the equilibrium in question 3. If, instead of the indicated concentrations, the
concentrations are 2.30 x 10-4, 2.30 x 10-4 and 2.30 x 10-4 respectively, would it be at
equilibrium? If not, would you expect the amount of water vapour present to increase
or decrease?

6. 0.300 mol A and 0.200 mol B are placed in a 1.00L container and allowed to come to
equilibrium according to the equation: A + 2B C + 3D. At equilibrium, the
concentration of C is 0.0500M. Calculate Keq.

7. 0.400mol P and 1.30 mol Q are placed in a 2.00L container and allowed to come to
equilibrium according to the equation: 2P + Q R + 2S. At equilibrium, the
concentration of S is 0.150M. Calculate Keq.

8. Calculate the hydronium concentration at equilibrium in a 0.100M solution of HA. The

equilibrium is as follows: HA(aq) + H2O(l) H3O(aq) + + A- (aq). The Keq for this reaction
is: 2.34 x 10-8.

9. Calculate the hydronium concentration at equilibrium in a 0.200M solution of HF. The

equilibrium is as follows: HF(aq) + H2O(l) F- (aq) + H3O+ (aq). Keq for the reaction is
7.2 x 10-4.

10. For the synthesis of ammonia at 500oC, the equilibrium constant is

6.0 x 10-2. Predict the direction in which the system will shift to reach equilibrium in
each of the following cases:
a) [NH3]=1.0 x 10-3 M, [N2]=1.0 x 10-5 M and [H2]=2.0 x 10-3 M
b) [NH3]=1.0 x 10-9 M, [N2]=1.0 x 10-3 M and [H2]=2.0 x 10-2 M
