Content/Concept Storagedevicesareoneofthecorecomponentsofanycomputersystem.Theystoreallthedataand
applicationsonacomputer,excepthardwarefirmware.Theyareavailableindifferentformfactorsdependingon
thetypeofunderlyingdevice.Forexample,astandardcomputerhasmultiplestoragedevicesincludingRAM,
cache,aharddisk,anopticaldiskdriveandexternallyconnectedUSBdrives.

Therearetwodifferenttypesofstoragedevices:
PrimaryStoragedevices
SecondaryStoragedevices

Definition(s):
PrimaryStorageDevices:Generallysmallerinsize,aredesignedtoholddatatemporarilyandare
internaltothecomputer.Theyhavethefastestdataaccessspeed,andincludeRAMandcache
memory.
SecondaryStorageDevices:Theseusuallyhavelargestoragecapacity,andtheystoredata
permanently.Theycanbebothinternalandexternaltothecomputer,andtheyincludetheharddisk,
compactdiskdriveandUSBstoragedevice.

Secondarystoragedevicesareessentialtostoringdatainacomputersystem.Thesedeviceprovideameans
ofkeepingdataforanextendedperiodoftime.Thisdatacanalsoberetrievedatanygiventimeforusage.
