Energy

Lesson 1 Food and fuels Kerboodle pages 140 - 141

What is the unit of energy? The unit of energy is joules (J)
How many joules (J) are in a kilojoule (kJ)? There are 1000 joules in a kilojoule.
I kJ = 1000 J
Give three reasons why humans need energy? To keep your body warm, to breathe, to move, to
talk , to grow
Lesson 2 Energy adds up Kerboodle pages 142 - 143

What is the law of the conservation of energy? Energy cannot be created of destroyed, only
transferred.
What is a chemical store? The energy stored in food or fuels

Complete the table

Energy to do with.. Type of store Energy to do with.. Type of store

food, fuel, batteries food, fuel, batteries Chemical
hot objects hot objects thermal
moving objects moving objects kinetic
position in a position in a gravitational gravitational
gravitational field field potential
Changing shape, Changing shape, elastic
stretching or stretching or squashing
squashing

State three ways that energy can be transferred. Energy can be transferred by electric current, light
and sound
What does The energy has dissipated mean? The energy has been given off as heat to the
surroundings.
Lesson 3 Energy and Temperature Kerboodle pages 144 - 145

How do you measure temperature? You cannot measure temperature with your skin.
You use a thermometer
What is the unit of temperature? Degrees Celsius (oC)

What happens when things heat up? The particles vibrate more
The particles spread out.
Hot objects cool down because Hot objects cool down because energy is
transferred from the hot object to the colder
object.
When will objects be in equilibrium? Objects will be in equilibrium when no more
energy is being transferred and both objects are
the same temperature.
Lesson 4 Energy transfer: particles. Kerboodle pages 146 - 147

What is conduction? Conduction is when energy is transferred trough

an objects. The energy is transferred from particle
to particle.
Why is metal a good conductor? Metal is a good conductor because energy is
transferred through it quickly.
What is a insulator? An insulator is an object where energy cannot pass
through it easily. Liquids and gases are good
insulators.
Energy

What is a convection current? A convection current occurs when heated particles

become less dense and rise and cooler, denser
particles sink.
Lesson 5 Energy transfer: radiation Kerboodle pages 148 - 149

How is energy transfer by radiation different to You do not need particles to radiate energy.
concution and convection?
What type of radiation does the sun give out? Infrared radiation (thermal radiation)

How do light and infrared radiation travel? Light and infrared radiation both travel as waves

Why might you feel hotter in the summer if you Dark colours absorb infrared radiation and light or
wear dark clothes? shiny surfaces reflect them.
Lesson 6 Energy resources Kerboodle pages 150 - 151

Name the three fossil fuels Coal, oil and gas

Why are fossil fuels non-renewable? Fossil fuels will run out as you cannot make them
easily.
Put these statements in order to explain how a
power station works.

The steam turns the turbine 2 The steam turns the turbine
A fuel heats water to produce steam 1 A fuel heats water to produce steam
The turbine drives the generator 3 The turbine drives the generator

Give one problem with burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels produce a lot of carbon dioxide which is
a greenhouse gas so it can contribute to climate
change.
What does renewable mean? Renewable means that the energy resource will
not run out.
Name seven renewable energy resources Wind, tidal, waves, biomass, solar,
hydroelectricity, geothermal
Lesson 7 Energy and power Kerboodle pages 152 - 153

What does the power rating of a microwave tell Power rating tells you how much energy the
you? microwave can transfer per second
What is the unit of power rating? Power rating is measured in Watts (W)

What is the equation for power? Power = energy time

How do you calculate the energy used in kilowatt Energy used in kWh = energy used (Kw) x number
hours (kWh)? of hours
Lesson 8 Work, energy and machines Kerboodle pages 154 - 155

In physics what does work mean? Work is another way of transferring energy

When you lift a book you do work against gravity.

How do you calaculate work done? Work done (J) = force (N) x distance (m)

Name two types of simple machines Levers and gears are two simple machine

Both machines are force muliplies. What does this Gears and levers make forces bigger.
