Part 1
Braver than a Brave New World was the last and final major writing assignment in which
high school seniors were required to complete. It was the most significant piece of writing owing
to the fact it was my first time that I have ever conducted a research paper in my entire scholastic
career. One of the requisites the instructor wanted us to fulfill was the length to be at least five
pages long, or more. The purpose for this writing was to train my fellow peers and I to be able to
write extended amounts of pages. As well as, to test my ability of being able to retrieve
information from Aldous Huxleys novel, Brave New World and giving the appropriate
recognition.
By analyzing Huxleys text and making a connection with todays society made me realize
that the dystopian community presented in his textual world is in fact seen in the present days of
humanity. The inquiry our AP English teacher was seeking was if I understood the concept of
when the author had displayed the use of a rhetorical strategy also known as foreshadowing. If
so, the advantage I had procured from the authors ideas made it easier for the process of my
writing to initiate.
As I have mentioned previously above, the context which spurred the need to write came
from the AP English Language instructor. It was within her guidelines where she created a
prompt for her class to be able to address the two societal events that occurred throughout
Huxleys novel. Not only that, but to also write about how those societal events are visible in the
realm of reality.
Many conflicts that had spurred in the process of the writing assignment was retrieving
sources and connecting them to a personal point of view. Another constraint high school students
dealt with was being able to notice what rhetorical strategies the author used throughout his/her
novel. Lastly, the given research paper was only reviewed by the teacher. Therefore, the lack of
feedback from peers really affected writers to see what helpful suggestions their classmates
could implement to better enhance the writing quality.
Since the English teacher was the audience for this project, it was a distinct goal to prove to
her that the prompt was answered and also demonstrate the correct use of incorporating other
writings throughout the paper. Not only that, but to also support the indication of whether or not
Huxley's intention of foreshadowing events is validly seen in the real world.
In all, what a student could acquire from this experience is becoming familiar with
including another authors point of view to support the claim or argument being constructed by
the student. This allows classmates to understand that there is many scholars who have a similar
argument to theirs, but portray their evidence differently.
Part 2
The chosen disciplinary field was the communications major. This specific field is
allocated under the department of Arts and Humanities. The academic expectations is to compel
a personal connection with the text by using analytical references. Students of this particular
field will be asked open-ended questions on multiple types of topics. To help shape their
writing they are expected to include other sources, which will have different viewpoints, and
successfully linking a connection with the sources provided. These will then display the
argument with supported evidence giving the audience the coherent message. A must in the
communications academic writing system is to establish credibility by quoting and paraphrasing
anothers work. Manifesting these strategies will make guide the student to success in the chosen
disciplinary field.
According to the CSUS handbook, Inquiry in the arts and humanities involves a close
and careful analysis of scholarly texts, works of art, and performances and consideration of
social and historical forces that help shape texts (147). It is up to the student, the rhetor
(Grant-Davie 347), to establish their points effectively and correlate the ideas with other
writings. Doing so, it grants the student an advantageous position in authority where their ideas
can be a cohesive message for their audience.
With all the presumable assumptions, there are two non-expected policies in which a
students do not have to acquire in this educational program. Since there are different genres of
majors, all have different writing requirements for the student. Thus, conducting collecting data
or using scientific evidence is not important in the area of Arts and Humanities. So, in correlation
to the communications field, the communicator has to have a purposeful exigence to be able to
discuss the issue. Establishing this, can allow solutions to arise when addressing the public.
In order to publicly establish ideas, a communicator has to be aware that there will be an
array of point of views coming from the audience, and having a firm credible foundation of
where they have retrieved their information is necessary.
In other words, the context of the communicator comes from where they received their
education; those roots would link to their educators in college and even the boss who is asking
for a specific topic to be covered.
In the communications field, the audience is what makes this career a functioning network.
As previously mentioned, those three points are vital when it comes in terms of communicating
with one another. All three must be included when presenting information. Plus, incorporating
academic resources show the skillful ability of a communicator has. Thus, intrigues and
increases the number of supporters and viewers.
Part 3
The research paper selected, Braver than a Brave New World, would not be considered
as a good paper. It would make sense if it were labeled as an okay performance. The
reasoning for that claim was in fact influenced by the AP English literature teacher who made
comments such as: resources that were employed did not make a form fitting connection,
expressed repetitive arguments without including enough evidence to support the repetition,
and lastly, wrote vague ideas in which lacked concreteness.
In, Researching the Arts and Humanities it clearly states, Inquiry in the arts and
humanities involves exploring what other scholars have said about the scholarly text, work of art,
or subject youre investigating and integrating the ideas of other scholars (Cuddon 146).
Without warning, this research paper was only preparing students to meet the academic standards
in the communications field. Which is to direct strong vivid quotes and to express the
subject in a sense that the community is able to grasp the main claim being presented through
the act of communication.
Throughout the field of communications, instructors have high academic writing standards
and if the paper does not suit the expectations then it would be discarded. As stated in the article,
Communications is situated in particular circumstances, motivated by specific goals creating
new knowledge through that interaction thus, the quality of any instance of rhetoric really
must depend on all those factors (Rhetoric , 323). Although, the high school paper did score at a
80 percent, it is obvious that it will not receive good feedback if reviewed by a professional
individual in the Communications field. Since the student lacked key factors in achieving
specific goals it resulted into a penalty for their grade; as well as, not being fully knowledgeable
in that area they were not given the advantage of constructing an effective piece of writing.
Since the high school was a low-funded school they could not supply the student with
helpful guidelines to follow.Whereas, college papers are to be written with broadened ideas,
including substantial credibility which helps the structure of the writing. Second, with the
example essays, conducted by Sac State students, exhibits how the selected research paper
lacked a variety of elements that are crucial to include in academic writings.
A principle which will be adapted into future writings is to not only exercise the usage of
resources, but to include personal connections. Furthermore, the dominant objective is to present
an argument that will move the audience in a positive circumstance. Applying these principles is
also a beneficial in workforce atmosphere.
