CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND AND ITS SETTING

A. INTRODUCTION

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal,

physical and/or social behavior that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can

involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. In

general term, is a repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behavior that is

harmful towards one or more persons.

In Philippine settings, Bullying is defined as any severe or repeated use by one

or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or

gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of

actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or

damage to his property.

As a student, Bullying may occur from any people, from grade school, secondary

and tertiary, it will arise anywhere. It is the major problem of the students then and up to

present. Many students or even ordinary people in the community hard to deal with the

stress, depression and even thought of suicide.

Nowadays, students encountered different problems in school like bullying and

there are common types of bullying like verbal bullying, it is using negative words like

blaming and accusing others , physical bullying, is hitting, tripping and destroying thing

by others , emotional bullying when a person tries to get what they want by making

others feel angry and afraid and cyber bullying, is using electronic technology like

cellphones, computer and tablets , example of cyber bullying is harassment.

B. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Bullying is a repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behavior that is

harmful towards one or more persons. Dont do unto others what you dont want others

do unto you - Confucius

According to the consolidated report of Department of Education

(DepEd),bullying cases on elementary and high school of both private and public

schools on 2014 rose by 21% or a total of 6,363 cases, compare with the 5,236. This

translates to 31 on 2013 daily bullying cases from a divisor of 201 school days. The

statistics was disclosed via interview in CNN channel9 2 years ago by Rep. Gerald

Anthony Gullas Jr., a member of the House Committee on basic education.

In RA 10627, the Anti-Bullying Act aims to protect the children enrolled in

kindergarten, elementary, and secondary schools and learning center from being

bullied. It requires schools to adopt policies to address the existence of bullying in their

respective institutions was signed by President Aquino, officially placing executive

imprimatur on the Bill passed by the 15th Congress.

The Province of Cavite particularly in Tanza, Cavite, In year 2015 there is a case

of bullying in Tanza National Comprehensive High School said the incident happened

that two female students are seen having an altercation. When the verbal exchange

heated up because those around them teased a fight and the school authorities have

already acted on this matter the day after happened.

C. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The research aims to determine what will be the Causes and Effects of Bullying

to the Grade 11 Students of Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High School. Specifically, the

study aims to answer the following:

1. The common causes of bullying by the Grade 11 students.

2. The effects of bullying to the behavior and attitude of Grade 11 students.

3. How does the Grade 11 student deals with the stress of bullying.

D. OBJECTIVES

This study will focus on the Causes and Effects of Bullying to the Grade 11

Students of Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High School. Specifically it aims to:

1. To determine the common causes of bullying by the Grade 11 students.

2. To determine the effects of bullying to the behavior and attitude of Grade 11

students.

3. How Grade 11 students deals with stress of bullying.

E. ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY

This study is anchored on the assumption that the subjects responded honestly

and objectively in filling out the survey questionnaire provided for this study.

F. SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study will focus on the Causes and Effects of Bullying, one hundred (100)

respondents coming from selected Grade 11 students of Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High

School in South Square Village, Pasong Kawayan II, General Trias, City Cavite during

the study randomly selected as the participants of the study and they will be given a

survey questionnaire and interview in order to gather data for study

G. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of this study can be beneficial to the following:

Guidance Counselors Who regularly handle bullying cases, are expected to

the students involved regardless of the seriousness of the situation. Even minor

cases teasing and name calling should be addressed to prevent worsening of the

scenario.

Parents To help them look through their own kids predisposition to bullying

and allow them to respond to the problem in their very homes where relationship

modeling normally begins.

School To provide knowledge to the students about bullying so they would

know how to be observant and protect the students from bullying.

H. DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following are the significant terms used in the study

a. Experience This refers to a general concept comprising knowledge of or

skill in or observation of something or some event gained through

involvement in or exposure to that thing or event

b. Physical Bullying This is any bullying that hurts someones body or

damages their possessions like stealing, hitting, fighting, and destroying

property

c. Verbal Bullying This includes saying something about someone behind

his/her back. It could be name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, racist

remarks and blackmail

d. Social Bullying Is often harder to recognize and can be carried out behind

the bullied persons back , it is designed to harm someones social reputation

and cause humiliation.

e. Cyber Bullying It is behaviors using digital technologies, including

hardware such as computers and smart phones, and software such as social

media, instant messaging, texts, websites and other online platforms.

f. Emotional Bullying This a deliberate attempt to hurt someone elses

like cruel teasing, talking viciously about people behind their backs,

spreading humiliating rumors, and excluding kids from group activities.

g. Defense Mechanism This a unconscious psychological mechanism that

reduces anxiety arising from unacceptable or potentially harmful stimuli.
