Pro-Choice

Part 1:
My junior year of high school, we were challenged to write a persuasive essay on anything we
would like. I usually like to be assigned a topic, it makes it easier to begin the process. After a
day or two of thinking, I asked myself what I had a strong belief of. I then came to a decision to
write it on Pro-choice. Another reason behind why I decided to write on such a sensitive issue to
many was because I am strongly passionate about a woman having the right to decide what they
want to do with their own bodies. I felt the need to talk about this because I felt as if people in
my town were so closed-minded and they all believed that being pro-choice was a bad thing.
Once I began to write the paper I was challenged by my teacher, Mr. Lopez. I clearly remember
turning in my first draft and him asking why? to every single thing I had wrote. By the second
draft, I had the same why? to everything I had added. I then moved on to my final draft, which
was about 4-5 pages in detail of why I believed in what I was claiming. By the end of this
assignment, I realized it was just so the outcome of my persuasive essay would turn out to be a
better paper than what I originally had begun with.

Part 2:
Many who are not in the Communications field may wonder what Communication Studies is.
Communication Studies can be a range of topics, from face-to-face conversation to mass media
outlets such as television broadcasting. Communication majors, which fall into the Arts and
Humanities category use reading, writing and some research on the daily. People who study in
the Arts and Humanities field usually make arguments. If they make an argument, they must
back it up with some sort of research theory. One important key factor is that when writing,
people have to focus on their own opinions, arguments, and/or experiences. That is when my
major comes into place. The writing for my major, Communication Studies, is usually always
personal.
When writing in my field, every type of essay is different. When writing a rhetorical
analysis we must choose something that is somehow unique to us, so that we can pick out key
factors to somehow make it personal. When writing a reading journal, we must write it in a way
that the piece is a conversation between the author and the writer. When writing a research paper,
the writing will be different than a scientific paper. For example, we wont be looking into an
experiment; we will be looking into reading in which we will analyze on our own. As you can
see the exigence, context and who the text is proposed to varies on what type of writing piece it
is. Whether it is a rhetorical analysis, or a research paper.
Part 3:
The Arts and Humanities field uses reading, writing and some research on the daily, as well as,
own personal beliefs. The text mentioned in part 1 of this assignment can be considered a good
paper in The Arts and Humanities field for two specific reasons.
One reason this paper that was written about pro-choice is a good paper to turn into an
instructor who specializes in the Arts and Humanities field is because it demonstrates one of the
characteristics in the field, which is the use of personal beliefs. Therefore, when you have a
professor that focuses on interpersonal communication or for a matter of fact any type of
communication, which is what they look for. They typically look for the student that is willing to
share what they think, and/or somehow open up. Like mentioned before, personal belief is one
major key factor is this field.
Furthermore, this specific paper may even get the professor to think of things differently,
it may be an eye-opener for them. This persuasive essay argues that being pro-choice is a good
thing. It includes various detailed scenarios of someone needing/wanting to get the abortion.
Those details and reasons demonstrate the use of application of theory. Application of theory are
observed occurrences that can have solutions to them. In other words, Application of theory is
also a key factor when writing in The Arts and Humanities field.
As has been noted, the text mentioned can be considered a good paper in the Arts and
Humanities field because it uses, one, personal beliefs and two, the use of application of theory.
Overall, a principle one can draw to help in future writing situations would be to refer back to the
California State University Sacramento writing in your field handbook.
