Preface

This section lists various resources that are available for help with using ABAQUS, including technical
engineering and systems support, training seminars, and documentation.

Support

ABAQUS, Inc., offers both technical engineering support and systems support for ABAQUS. Technical
engineering and systems support are provided through the nearest local support ofce. You can contact
our ofces by telephone, fax, electronic mail, the ABAQUS web-based support system, or regular mail.
Information on how to contact each ofce is listed in the front of each ABAQUS manual. The ABAQUS
Online Support System (AOSS) is accessible through the MY ABAQUS section of the ABAQUS Home
Page (www.abaqus.com). When contacting your local support ofce, please specify whether you would
like technical engineering support (you have encountered problems performing an ABAQUS analysis or
creating a model in ABAQUS) or systems support (ABAQUS will not install correctly, licensing does not
work correctly, or other hardware-related issues have arisen).
The ABAQUS Online Support System has a knowledge database of ABAQUS Answers. The ABAQUS
Answers are solutions to questions that we have had to answer or guidelines on how to use ABAQUS. We
welcome any suggestions for improvements to the support program or documentation. We will ensure that
any enhancement requests you make are considered for future releases. If you wish to le a complaint about
the service or products provided by ABAQUS, refer to the ABAQUS Home Page.

Technical engineering support

ABAQUS technical support engineers can assist in clarifying ABAQUS features and checking errors by giving
both general information on using ABAQUS and information on its application to specic analyses. If you
have concerns about an analysis, we suggest that you contact us at an early stage, since it is usually easier to
solve problems at the beginning of a project rather than trying to correct an analysis at the end.
Please have the following information ready before calling the technical engineering support hotline, and
include it in any written contacts:
Your site identier, which can be obtained by typing abaqus whereami at your system prompt (or by
selecting HelpOn Version from the main menu bar in ABAQUS/CAE or ABAQUS/Viewer).
The version of ABAQUS that are you using.
The version numbers for ABAQUS/Standard and ABAQUS/Explicit are given at the top of the data
(.dat) le.
The version numbers for ABAQUS/CAE and ABAQUS/Viewer can be found by selecting
HelpOn Version from the main menu bar.
The version numbers for the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW and the ABAQUS Interface for
MSC.ADAMS are output to the screen.
The version number for ABAQUS for CATIA V5 can be found by selecting HelpAbout
ABAQUS for CATIA V5 from the main menu bar in either of the ABAQUS for CATIA V5
workbenches.

i
The type of computer on which you are running ABAQUS.
The symptoms of any problems, including the exact error messages, if any.
Workarounds or tests that you have already tried.

When calling for support about a specic problem, any available ABAQUS output les may be helpful in
answering questions that the support engineer may ask you.
The support engineer will try to diagnose your problem from the model description and a description of
the difculties you are having. The support engineer may need model sketches, which can be sent via fax,
e-mail, or regular mail. Plots of the nal results or the results near the point that the analysis terminated may
also be needed to understand what may have caused the problem.
If the support engineer cannot diagnose your problem from this information, you may be asked to
supply the input data. The data can be attached to a support incident in the ABAQUS Online Support
System. It may also be sent by means of e-mail, tape, disk, or ftp. Please check the ABAQUS Home Page
(http://www.abaqus.com) for the media formats that are currently accepted.
All support incidents are tracked in the ABAQUS Online Support System. This enables you (as well as
the support engineer) to monitor the progress of a particular problem and to check that we are resolving support
issues efciently. To use the ABAQUS Online Support System, you need to register with the system. Visit the
MY ABAQUS section of the ABAQUS Home Page for instructions on how to register. If you are contacting
us by means outside the AOSS to discuss an existing support problem and you know the incident number,
please mention it so that we can consult the database to see what the latest action has been and, thus, give
you more efcient support as well as avoid duplication of effort. In addition, please give the receptionist the
support engineers name if contacting us via telephone or include it at the top of any e-mail correspondence.

Systems support

ABAQUS systems support engineers can help you resolve issues related to the installation and running of
ABAQUS, including licensing difculties, that are not covered by technical engineering support.
You should install ABAQUS by carefully following the instructions in the ABAQUS Installation and
Licensing Guide. If you are able to complete the installation, please make sure that the product verication
procedure was run successfully at the end of the installation procedure. Successful verication for licensed
products would indicate that you can run these products on your computer; unsuccessful verication for
licensed products indicates problems with the installation or licensing (or both). If you encounter problems
with the installation, licensing, or verication, rst review the instructions in the ABAQUS Installation and
Licensing Guide to ensure that they have been followed correctly. If this does not resolve the problems,
consult the ABAQUS Answers database in the ABAQUS Online Support System for information about known
installation problems. If this does not address your situation, please create an incident in the AOSS and
describe your problem, including the output from abaqus info=support. If you call, mail, e-mail, or fax
us about a problem (instead of using the AOSS), please provide the output from abaqus info=support. It
is important that you provide as much information as possible about your problem: error messages from an
aborted analysis, output from the abaqus info=support command, etc.

installation. For information on installing ABAQUS, see the ABAQUS Installation and Licensing
Guide.

1.1 What information does this manual contain?

This manual explains how to use the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW for two-dimensional
and three-dimensional simulations. For detailed information about using MOLDFLOW, see the
MOLDFLOW documentation collection available from Moldow Corporation.

1.2 What is the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW?

Moldow Corporation creates simulation software that is used by the plastics injection molding
industry. One of these programs, MOLDFLOW PLASTICS INSIGHT (referred to as MOLDFLOW
in this manual), models the mold-lling process. The results of a MOLDFLOW simulation include
calculations of material properties and residual stresses in the plastic part.
The ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW translates nite element model information from a
MOLDFLOW analysis into a partial ABAQUS input le. The translator requires the MOLDFLOW
interface les that are created by the MOLDFLOW analysis. (See The MOLDFLOW interface les,
Section 2.2, for more information.)
For two-dimensional simulations, the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW reads the interface
(.pat and .osp) les created by MOLDFLOW Version MPI 3 or later. Interface (.mab) les created
by MOLDFLOW Version MPI 2 (and supported as an option in Version MPI 3) are not compatible with
this release of the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW.
For three-dimensional simulations, the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW reads the interface
(.pat and .xml) les created using MOLDFLOW Version MPI 4 or later and the Visual Basic script
strintf3d.vbs. This script is available to MOLDFLOW customers from Moldow Community
Center (MCC) on the Moldow Corporation web site.

INTRODUCTION

1.3 What is the general procedure for using the ABAQUS Interface
for MOLDFLOW?
The following procedure summarizes the typical usage of the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW.
The remaining sections of this manual discuss these steps in detail.

To use the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW:

1. Run a MOLDFLOW simulation.
2. Export the data as follows:
For a two-dimensional MOLDFLOW simulation, export the nite element mesh data to a le
named job-name.pat and the results data (material properties and residual stresses) to a le
named job-name.osp.
For a three-dimensional MOLDFLOW simulation, run the Visual Basic script
strintf3d.vbs to export the nite element mesh data to a le named
job-name_mesh.pat and the results data to .xml les. For more information on the
interface les generated using the setup script, see The MOLDFLOW interface les,
Section 2.2.
3. Run the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW to create a partial ABAQUS input le from the
MOLDFLOW interface les.
4. Edit the ABAQUS input le to add appropriate data for the analysis (for example, add boundary
conditions and step data).
5. Submit the ABAQUS input le for analysis.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

This chapter provides a short overview of the data generated by the MOLDFLOW simulation. In
addition, this chapter lists the assumptions used to translate the MOLDFLOW data for the purposes of
an ABAQUS analysis and describes the resulting ABAQUS les. The following topics are covered:

The MOLDFLOW simulation, Section 2.1

The MOLDFLOW interface les, Section 2.2
Assumptions used to translate the MOLDFLOW data for two-dimensional simulations,
Section 2.3
Assumptions used to translate the MOLDFLOW data for three-dimensional simulations,
Section 2.4

2.1 The MOLDFLOW simulation

The MOLDFLOW injection molding simulation of polymers can provide information on the thermo-
mechanical properties and residual stresses of a part resulting from the manufacturing process. This
information is written to interface les for subsequent nite element stress analysis.
All mechanical properties (including the effects of oriented bers, if present) are calculated by
MOLDFLOW and written to the interface les as orthotropic constants at points through the thickness
of the part. Models that contain oriented bers are referred to as lled; models without oriented bers
are referred to as unlled.
The temperature of the model at the end of the analysis is taken to be uniform at the ambient
temperature specied in the MOLDFLOW analysis. Any residual stresses due to cooling are also
included, if requested.
For detailed information on obtaining a solution with MOLDFLOW and preparing the interface
les, please refer to the relevant MOLDFLOW documentation.

Note: The ABAQUS nite element mesh generated by the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW has
the same topology as the MOLDFLOW mesh. Therefore, when you create the mesh for the original
MOLDFLOW analysis, you should design a topology that is appropriate for both the mold-lling
simulation in MOLDFLOW and the structural analysis in ABAQUS.

2.2 The MOLDFLOW interface files

For two-dimensional simulations, you must use MOLDFLOW Version MPI 3 or later to create two
interface les: job-name.pat and job-name.osp. Both les must use the same units.

21
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

For three-dimensional simulations, you must use MOLDFLOW Version MPI 4 or later and a setup
script to create the interface les required for the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW. Table 21 shows
the names of the interface les that are generated for lled and unlled models.

Finite element mesh data (job-name.pat and job-name_mesh.pat):

Nodal coordinates
Element topology
Element property information

Material property data:

Elastic and thermal expansion coefcients for each element. For two-dimensional simulations, these
properties may be isotropic or orthotropic; for three-dimensional simulations, these properties are
orthotropic. Orthotropic coefcients are in the material principal directions.

22
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

Residual stress data:

A plane stress residual stress state is dened in the same directions as the material properties. The
stress state in the material coordinates is dened in terms of the principal stresses (the residual shear
stress is zero).

2.3 Assumptions used to translate the MOLDFLOW data for

two-dimensional simulations
For two-dimensional simulations the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW translator makes a number of
assumptions regarding the topology and properties of the data. These assumptions, listed below, ensure
compatibility with the options available in the current release of ABAQUS.
The MOLDFLOW mesh can consist of 3-node, planar, triangular elements as well as 2-node, one-
dimensional elements that represent components such as runners and ribs. The ABAQUS Interface
for MOLDFLOW translates the triangular elements to an identical mesh of ABAQUS S3R shell
elements. One-dimensional elements in the MOLDFLOW mesh are not translated.
The number of layers in the ABAQUS S3R shell elements created by the ABAQUS Interface for
MOLDFLOW is equal to the number of through-thickness points dened for the MOLDFLOW
analysis. The maximum number of layers is 20.
The ABAQUS input data created by the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW depend on the kind
of material dened in the interface (.osp) le as follows:
For unlled isotropic materials ABAQUS assumes the following:
A homogeneous shell formulation.
Isotropic material constants.
ABAQUS section point initial stresses are interpolated from the values at the
MOLDFLOW through-thickness integration points.
For unlled transversely isotropic materials ABAQUS assumes the following:
A homogeneous shell formulation.
Transversely isotropic material constants dened for the section in terms of material
principal directions plus the orientation with respect to the local ABAQUS coordinate
system.
ABAQUS section point initial stresses are interpolated from the values at the
MOLDFLOW through-thickness integration points.
For ber-lled materials ABAQUS assumes the following:
A composite shell formulation.
Lamina material constants dened for each layer in terms of material principal directions
plus the orientation with respect to the local ABAQUS coordinate system for each layer.

23
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

MOLDFLOW through-thickness integration points are taken as the midpoint of each

ABAQUS layer.
Material properties are constant for each layer.
ABAQUS section point initial stresses are the same as the values at the MOLDFLOW
through-thickness integration points and constant through each layer.
The ABAQUS input le that the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW generates does not contain
boundary condition and load data. You must add this information to the input le manually.

2.4 Assumptions used to translate the MOLDFLOW data for

three-dimensional simulations
For three-dimensional simulations the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW translator makes a number
of assumptions regarding the topology and properties of the data. These assumptions, listed below, ensure
compatibility with the options available in the current release of ABAQUS.

The ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW translates the tetrahedral elements to an identical
mesh of ABAQUS C3D4 or C3D10 solid elements (see Execution procedure for the
ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW, Section 3.1, for more information).
Material principal directions are the eigenvectors of the ber tensor. The highest eigenvalue
corresponds to the 1-1 direction, the second highest eigenvalue corresponds to the 2-2 direction,
and the lowest eigenvalue corresponds to the 3-3 direction.
Orthotropic material constants are in terms of material principal directions.
Material properties are constant for each element.
Initial stresses are computed from the nodal shrinkage percentage, averaged, and weighted in the
same ratio as the thermal expansion properties.
The ABAQUS input le that the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW generates does not contain
boundary condition and load data. You must add this information to the input le manually.

2.5 Files created by the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW

The ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW reads the MOLDFLOW interface les and creates the relevant
les. The les created depend on which options you include on the command line when executing the
ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW. The les are described in the following sections:

Files created for a two-dimensional simulation, Section 2.5.1

Files created for a three-dimensional simulation, Section 2.5.2

24
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

2.5.1 Files created for a two-dimensional simulation

For a two-dimensional simulation the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW creates the following three
les:
Partial ABAQUS input (.inp) file
The partial ABAQUS input le contains model data consisting of nodal coordinates, element
topology, and section denitions. It also contains a *STATIC step with default output requests.
If you are working with isotropic materials, the input le contains material property data. Each
input le begins with a series of comments that summarize the data provided by the MOLDFLOW
interface les and how the data are translated to the ABAQUS input le. Additional data, such as
boundary conditions and loads, and non-default output requests must be added to this le manually.

Neutral (.shf) file containing material data for layered, spatially varying material properties
Material data are translated into an appropriately formatted ASCII neutral le. This le contains
lamina material property data for each layer of each element. The ABAQUS keywords *ELASTIC,
TYPE=SHORT FIBER and *EXPANSION, TYPE=SHORT FIBER in the ABAQUS input (.inp)
le direct ABAQUS/Standard to read material data from this le during the initialization step.

Data lines in the neutral (.shf) file:

First line:
1. Number of elements in the .shf le.
2. Number of layers in each shell section.
Subsequent lines:
1. Element label.
2. Layer identier.

25
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

11. Fiber orientation angle (in degrees), measured relative to an element-dependent reference
coordinate system embedded in the shell midsurface with the local x-axis dened to lie along
the vector connecting the rst two nodes of the element connectivity.
This data line is repeated as often as necessary to dene the above parameters for different
layers of a shell section within different elements.

Initial stress (.str) file containing residual stress data

Residual stress data from the MOLDFLOW analysis are translated into an appropriately formatted
ASCII neutral le. These data are dened in terms of the local ABAQUS coordinate system at each
section point. The ABAQUS keyword *INITIAL CONDITIONS, TYPE=STRESS, SECTION
POINTS in the ABAQUS input (.inp) le directs ABAQUS/Standard to read initial stress data
from this le during the initialization step.

2.5.2 Files created for a three-dimensional simulation

If you are using an unlled model, the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW creates only the partial
ABAQUS input le described below. For a three-dimensional simulation using a lled model, the
ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW creates the following les:
Partial ABAQUS input (.inp) file
The partial ABAQUS input le contains model data consisting of nodal coordinates, element
topology, and section denitions. Each input le begins with a series of comments that summarize
the data provided by the MOLDFLOW interface les and how the data are translated to the
ABAQUS input le. Additional data, such as boundary conditions and loads, and non-default
output requests must be added to this le manually.

Material (.mpt) file containing orthotropic material properties data

Material data from the MOLDFLOW analysis are collected and placed in a binary le. The data
written to the le are in the same form as the information provided for the ABAQUS keyword
*ELASTIC, TYPE=ENGINEERING CONSTANTS. These are dened in terms of the local
ABAQUS coordinate system of each element.

Orientation (.opt) file containing element orientation data

The eigenvectors of the ber orientation tensor data from the MOLDFLOW analysis are computed
and placed in a binary le. These eigenvectors dene the principal directions of the material
properties of each element.

Thermal expansion (.tpt) file containing element thermal expansion coefficient data
The orthotropic thermal expansion data from the MOLDFLOW analysis are collected and placed in
a binary le. These are dened in terms of the local ABAQUS coordinate system of each element.

26
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

Volumetric shrinkage (.vpt) file containing element volumetric shrinkage data

The node-based volumetric shrinkage data from the MOLDFLOW analysis are collected and placed
in a binary le. These are averaged to create an element-based quantity for each element.

USING THE ABAQUS INTERFACE FOR MOLDFLOW

3. USING THE ABAQUS INTERFACE FOR MOLDFLOW

This chapter describes the procedure used to create the ABAQUS input les from the MOLDFLOW
interface les and how to prepare the input les for analysis. The following topics are covered:
Execution procedure for the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW, Section 3.1
Preparing the ABAQUS input (.inp) le for analysis, Section 3.2

3.1 Execution procedure for the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW

Upon execution, the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW reads the MOLDFLOW interface les and
creates the relevant ABAQUS les. The les created depend on the options included on the command
line. You execute the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW using the following command:
abaqus moldflow job=job-name [input=input-name] [mpi3d]
[element_order={1 | 2}]
[initial_stress={on | off}]
You can include the following options on the command line:
job
This option species the name of the ABAQUS input les to be created. It is also the default name
of the les containing the MOLDFLOW interface data.

input
This option is used to specify the name of the les containing the MOLDFLOW interface data if it
is different from job-name.

mpi3d
This option must be specied for three-dimensional simulations to read the MOLDFLOW interface
(.pat and .xml) les created by MOLDFLOW MPI/3D.

element_order
This option is used to specify the order of elements created in the partial input le for
three-dimensional simulations. Possible values are 1 to create rst-order elements (C3D4) and 2
to create second-order elements (C3D10). The default value is 2. This option is valid only when
using the mpi3d option.

initial_stress
This option species whether or not initial stress due to volumetric shrinkage will be included in
the model. Possible values are on and off. The default value is off. This option is valid only
when using the mpi3d option.

31
USING THE ABAQUS INTERFACE FOR MOLDFLOW

3.2 Preparing the ABAQUS input (.inp) file for analysis

Once the ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW has created the ABAQUS input (.inp) le, you must
complete the input le manually before submitting it for analysis. Refer to the ABAQUS Analysis Users
Manual for detailed information on performing an ABAQUS analysis.

3.2.1 Preparing for a shrinkage and warpage analysis

A shrinkage and warpage analysis calculates the deformation caused by the residual stresses in the model
after it is removed from the mold. Usually only rigid body modes must be removed.
In this case you must ensure that residual stresses have been translated and that the initial stress
(job-name.str) le or the volumetric shrinkage (job-name.vpt) le associated with the *INITIAL
CONDITIONS keyword is available. You are now required to add appropriate boundary conditions to
the ABAQUS input le to remove the rigid body modes of the model.
In certain cases problems with convergence can occur when you must account for geometric
nonlinearity and large initial stresses are present. You can overcome these problems by using two
analysis steps:
In the rst step constrain all displacement degrees of freedom.
In the second step use the OP=NEW parameter to apply boundary conditions that remove the rigid
body modes.

3.2.2 Preparing for a service loading analysis

A service loading analysis (with appropriate boundary conditions) assesses the performance of the model.
You can perform this analysis with or without initial stresses. You must specify the appropriate boundary
conditions and loads as history data in the ABAQUS input le.

3.2.3 Preparing for other analysis types

Any ABAQUS/Standard analysis procedure can be performed with the translated model provided that
you specify the correct boundary conditions and loading in the ABAQUS input le. In addition, certain
analysis types may require you to specify additional material constants, model data, and/or solution
controls in the input le.

EXAMPLES

4. EXAMPLES
This chapter provides examples of MOLDFLOW models translated to ABAQUS input les by the
ABAQUS Interface for MOLDFLOW. All of the les associated with these examples are included with
the ABAQUS release. The following topics are covered:

Extracting example problem les, Section 4.1

Example 1: Natural frequency analysis of a ber-lled bracket, Section 4.2
Example 2: Natural frequency analysis of an unlled bracket, Section 4.3
Example 3: Loading of a three-dimensional lled bracket, Section 4.4

4.1 Extracting example problem files

You can use the ABAQUS fetch utility to extract example problem les from the compressed archive
les provided with the ABAQUS release. To extract all of the relevant les for a particular example
problem, you must enter the following commands:

abaqus fetch job=moldflow_exn

abaqus fetch job=moldflow_exn_nodes
abaqus fetch job=moldflow_exn_elements

where n is the example problem number of interest. For example, to extract les for Example 1 you
would enter the following commands:

abaqus fetch job=moldflow_ex1

abaqus fetch job=moldflow_ex1_nodes
abaqus fetch job=moldflow_ex1_elements

4.2 Example 1: Natural frequency analysis of a fiber-filled bracket

The bracket in this example consists of 926 nodes and 1719 S3R elements. The model contains seven
different element sets. Each element set has a different thickness and is modeled as a laminated composite
with 20 layers.
Ten unrestrained vibration modes are computed. The rst six frequencies are approximately zero.
The frequencies for the rst four exible modes are listed in Table 41.

4.3 Example 2: Natural frequency analysis of an unfilled bracket

This example uses the same ABAQUS nite element model as Example 1, but the material properties are
transversely isotropic. The shell section denition is homogeneous instead of composite. Twenty-one
equally spaced Simpson integration points are used through the shell thickness.
The frequencies for the rst four exible vibration modes of the unlled bracket are listed in
Table 42. The unlled material in this example is softer than the lled material in Example 1 and,
consequently, the frequencies are lower.

4.4 Example 3: Loading of a three-dimensional filled bracket

This example uses a solid ABAQUS nite element model that is similar to the model used in Example 1.
The model is restrained by applying boundary conditions to the inside of the two bolt holes on the lower
part of the bracket. The model is loaded by applying concentrated loads in the - and -directions
around the large hole of the bracket.
The ABAQUS nite element model is shown in Figure 42, and a contour plot of the initial stresses
(Mises) is shown in Figure 43.
