Welcoming
Remarks
On Behalf of Rector, Vice Rector of Academic and
Learning, Research, and Public Services,
Prof. Dr. H. Achmad Syahrani, MS., Apt

Sugeng Rawuh.
Welcome to Surabaya.

I warmly welcome you to Universitas Airlangga for this remarkable 1st Asian
Undergraduate Summit. This summit has the main goal to foster the understanding of the
participants to be ready to face the complexities of the environmental problems that are
being faced by Asia, particularly by Indonesia and Singapore. Food, water, and energy are
essential for human beings, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. These three
sectors are actually interrelated to each other and thus the use of a right approach that
can solve one problem in one sector without creating any other problems in other sectors
is really needed. Nexus approach is the answer of this question as this approach provides a
beneficial response to all sectors mutually.

In this event, we would like to discuss the basic idea of nexus particularly in Indonesia
and Singapore context. As the awareness of nexus approach in Indonesia is still low, this
program could be an initiative to the government, as the policy maker, to start using
nexus approach in making decision regarding to the environmental problems, especially
in Surabaya. Moreover, we hope that all participants can present brilliant ideas, have
meaningful discussions, and share precious experiences. Therefore, we can learn from each
other more closely to contribute to the betterment of our societies and to support the idea
of this summit which is to create significant future leaders in this complex world.

Last but not least, I wish that all of you have a productive and meaningful meeting while
you are at the campus of Universitas Airlangga in the great and sparkling city of Surabaya.

the topic. The topics will focus more on the issues and crisis that are currently encountered
particularly in Indonesia.

The organizer invites the lecturers of the Faculty of Science and Technology and Public
Health who possess related academic background to the main theme of this program. A
competent alumnus will also be invited to give a lecture. The alumnus takes a special role as
