Authors: Milton Mayfield, Jacqueline Mayfield, & Cassandra Wheeler

Journal Name: Human Resource Management International Digest

Date of Article: 2016

In order for companies to develop their organization they need to know the importance of
human resources as well as the skills within their organization. Three avenues are defined as helping
organizations gain a competitive advantage. They are talent inventories, training & development, and
workforce planning. Talent inventories refer to the knowledge of what the employee is capably to do.
For human resource to run effectively requires that top management be sure that members have the
required skills. Training and development will be used to check for gaps regarding members skills and
make changes where needed. If any gaps are found this will allow HR to develop additional training
sessions in hopes that members utilize transfer of knowledge. Workforce planning is to set strategies
and goals that will shape the future of a workforce. There are several departments within an
organization that can be affected if adjustments are not made. For an organization to be successful the
three talent functions should be incorporated.
