Unit Title: The War to End All Wars Name: Damian Torres
Content Area: Social Science Grade Level: 10th Grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
10.5
Students analyze the causes and course of the First World War.
Analyze the arguments for entering into war presented by leaders from all sides of the Great War and the role of political and economic rivalries, ethnic and
ideological conflicts, domestic discontent and disorder, and propaganda and nationalism in mobilizing the civilian population in support of total war.
Examine the principal theaters of battle, major turning points, and the importance of geographic factors in military decisions and outcomes (e.g., topography,
waterways, distance, climate).
Explain how the Russian Revolution and the entry of the United States affected the course and outcome of the war.
Understand the nature of the war and its human costs (military and civilian) on all sides of the conflict, including how colonial peoples contributed to the war
effort.
Discuss human rights violations and genocide, including the Ottoman governments actions against Armenian citizens.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will write a war diary, writing what it was like on the front. They will be writing in the first person as if they were actually experiencing these events.
Primary sources and examples of diaries will be provided so they have something to go off of.

Students will create a timeline using Chronozoom a timeline making website. Students will be put into groups and will be responsible for different events
happening during World War 1 and after each group is finished with their portion we will put it together. The hope is that with each period doing a portion we
will have a lot of the major events of the war on the timeline.

Students will also be creating a dramatization of what happened during World War One between the different world leaders, and will be dramatizing different
events that changed the world!

As I have stated many times in class I LOVE PODCASTS! So its only natural that we will be creating our very own podcast! With all of the information we have
learned in class we will all become story-tellers and bring the First World War to life. Each Student will be assigned some aspect of the First World War and will
be responsible for creating a 5-10 minute podcast about the topic they were given.
Unit Summary:
Within this unit students will be analyzing the origins of the First World War. The reasons and arguments given to join the war from the different world leaders
perspectives. We will then be discussing major battles and turning points throughout the war. We will discuss the Russian revolution and the implications of the
United States getting involved in the war. We will then discuss the nature of war and it's tremendous human costs associated with it. We will then lastly be
looking at the atrocities caused by the Ottoman government against the Armenian people.

Assessment Plan:
