2D Analysis of Filleted Bar

The filleted bar is made of Steel and has dimension which are shown in the sketch. The bar is
subjected to 50KN of force along its axis. We will be focusing on the stress and the deformation on
the fillets of the bar.

Procedure:
1. First of all open the Static Structural in Ansys Workbench.
2. The engineering data is taken to be default material which is structural steel.
3. Open the geometry and draw the filleted bar according to the given dimensions.
4. First of all draw a square of the dimensions of 100mm X 100mm as shown in the screenshot.
5. No draw a rectangle adjacent to it of the 100mm X 50mm dimensions as shown in the screenshot.
6. Add fillets of the given value of radius which is 15mm.

7. Add the thickness value of 10mm.

8. Click generate to generate the sketch drawn.
9. After above step geometry section is completed now open the model section of the static
structural.
10. Click to generate the mesh.
11. Increasing the number of elements of the mesh further increases the accuracy and the precision of
the results we obtain by solving the added solutions
12. In the static structural section add frictional support by right clicking to select insert on the static
structural and selection from the menu.

13. The frictional support is added to on end of the bar as shown in the figure and the force of 50KN
on the opposite end of the bar.
14. After the addition of these now add the X axis Directional deformation by right clicking on the
solution and from the deformation menu.
15. Similarly also insert X axis Normal stress.
16. Also insert X axis normal stress un averaged.
17. By right clicking on the solutions also insert the Normal stress and Structural error.
Usage of Un averaged Stress field
The averaged stress fields are usually efficient for us to interpret the results while un averaged stress
fields provide a way for us to analyze the accuracy of the results.
As the mesh in finer the solutions become more accurate the errors minimize accordingly. Also the
discontinuity of the stress field decreases so lesser the discontinuous the stress field the more accurate
the results.

18. Now modify the sketch.

19. And reduce the fillets to the sharp corners.
20. As we need to use a very fine mesh to study stress concentration reduce the mesh to half
21. After completing the sketch which is actually the half of the original bar we created we have to
apply all the solutions which we previously entered in the solution.
22. The results obtained for the deformation is shown in the above screenshot at the sharp fillet.
