ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM

The given data is ungrouped. So the we need to group the data and draw separate
grouped data distribution table for Highest temperature and Lowest Temperature.
Highest Temperature

1. No: of classes, K = 1 + 3.323 log n

Where n = total no: of observations
K = 1 + 3.323 log 31 6

2. Class width = (HV-LV)/K

HV = highest value
LV = lowest value
4122
= 3.167 4
6

The grouped data is as follows:

Class Interval Freq.

(Temp.Range)_ Days m f.m d fd d' fd' cf fd'2 x- (x-)2
20-24 1 22 22 -8 -8 -2 -2 1 4 -11.35 128.82
24-28 2 26 52 -4 -8 -1 -2 3 2 -7.35 54.02
28-32 11 30 330 0 0 0 0 14 0 -3.35 11.22
32-36 7 34 238 4 28 1 7 21 7 0.65 0.422

40-44 3 42 126 12 36 3 9 31 27 8.65 74.82
31 1034 104 26 68
1.Mean by direct method,
= (fm)/n
Where,
f = frequency
m = middle value of the class
n = total no: of observations
= (fm)/n = 33.35 C

2.Mean by Assumed Mean

= A+(fd)/n
Where,
A= Arbitrary mean
d = deviation from Arbitrary mean
= A+(fd)/n =30 + 104/31 = 33.35 C

3.Median

= + ( )

Where,
l1= the lower limit of the class in which the median lies
l2 = the upper limit of the class in which the median lies
f = the frequency of the class in which the median lies
m = the middle item or (n+1)/2th, where n stands for total number of items
c = the cumulative frequency of the class preceding the one in which the
median lies
l1 = 32
l2 = 36
m =(n+1)/2 =16
c =14
3632
M = 32 + (16-14) = 33.142
7
Median = 33.142C

4. Mode

1 0
Mode = 1 +
(1 0 )+(1 2 )

Where,
l1= the lower value of the class in which the mode lies
f1 = the frequency of the class in which the mode lies
f0 = the frequency of the class preceding the model class
f2 = the frequency of the class succeeding the model class
i = the class-interval of the modal class

l1= 28
f1 =11
f0 = 2
f2 = 7

Mode = 30.769C

5. Standard deviation

S.D, =f(x )2 /N
Where,
= mean
N = total no: of observation

= 4.88

6. Variance

2 = f(x )2 /N

Where,
= mean
N = total no: of observation

2 = 23.8144

For Lowest Temperature

1. No: of classes = 6

2. Class width = (HV-LV)/K

HV = highest value
LV = lowest value
229
= 2.166 3

The grouped data for lowest temperature is as follows:

Class Interval Freq.

22-25 1 23.5 23.5 9 9 3 3 31 8.2 67.24
31 482.5 33 11

1.Mean by direct method,

= (fm)/n
Where,
f = frequency
m = middle value of the class
n = total no: of observations
= (fm)/n = 15.56C

2.Median

= + ( )

l1 = 13

13
Median = 15.307C

4. Mode

Mode = 1 +
(1 0 )+(1 2 )

Where,
l1= the lower value of the class in which the mode lies
f1 = the frequency of the class in which the mode lies
f0 = the frequency of the class preceding the model class
f2 = the frequency of the class succeeding the model class
i = the class-interval of the modal class

l1= 13
f1 =13
f0 = 3
f2 = 5

Mode = 14.66C

5. Standard deviation

S.D, =f(x )2 /N
Where,
= mean
N = total no: of observation

= 3.784
6. Variance

2 = f(x )2 /N

Where,
= mean
N = total no: of observation

2 = 14.323

RESULTS

Lowest Temperature Highest Temperature

Mean 15.56 33.35
Median 15.30 33.14
Mode 14.66 30.76
Variance 14.323 23.81
Standard deviation 3.784 4.88

1. For Lowest temperature, Mean > Median > Mode.

Hence it is a Positively skewed distribution

2. For Highest temperature, Mean > Median > Mode.

Hence it is a Positively skewed distribution
CONCLUSION

1. The measures of central tendency and dispersion were calculated and the
values were found out.

2 The standard deviation is more for highest temperature (4.88) than lowest
temperature (3.784).

3. It is found out that in Lucknow during March the highest temperature

deviates from its mean value more when compared to its lowest
temperature.
