Aboriginal Studies 10 Theme I: Origin & Settlement Patterns


General Outcome: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the diverse cultural characteristics,
origins, and migration and settlement patterns of Aboriginal peoples.
Specific Outcome 2
Students will demonstrate an understanding that there are distinctive narrations of legends and stories that
are related to cultural characteristics of Aboriginal peoples:
appreciate the role of legends and stories of how Aboriginal peoples are interconnected to the
land and nature

English Language Arts General Learning Outcome:


-Listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
2.2 Respond to Texts
Construct meaning from texts:
compare the choices and behaviours of characters portrayed in oral, print and other media texts
with those of self and others
analyze how plot develops; the connection between plot and subplot; and the interrelationship of
plot, setting and characters
identify and explain conflict, and discuss how it develops and may be resolved
develop, clarify and defend own interpretation, based on evidence from the text with support from
own experiences

Students will:
-Observe and reflect their understanding on the importance of oral tradition and history through creative
writing and critical thinking.
-Express their thoughts and ideas and apply them to creative writing, illustration, and provide examples.
Written/Performance Assessment:
-Formative: Blackfoot Prayer [Formative: pronunciation]
-Summative: Buffalo Robe Report [Total of 15 marks]

Learning Activity #1:


-Students select a Paul Goble book on Native American Legends
-Explain the Buffalo Book Report project and Rubric and how these stories relate to the many stories
found within the film Dreamkeeper
Learning Activity #2:
-Students will spread out and read their books quietly to themselves
Learning Activity #3:
-Begin working on the Buffalo Robe Report; draw and describe the significant items of the story.

Assessment/Differentiation:
-Student comprehension on the importance of Oral Tradition
-Students develop creative thinking and critical thinking skills
-Students will work on their grammar, proper sentence structure, and how they chose to present their art
work on the buffalo robe.
