3
Upgrading to Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1

This chapter explains how to upgrade from Oracle Discoverer Release 3.1 to Oracle
Discoverer Release 4.1.
Upgrading to Discoverer Release 4.1 is a simple process which utilizes the End User
Layer (EUL) tables from your current version of Discoverer, and recreates them as
Release 4.1 EULs.
The upgrade from Discoverer Release 3.1 to Release 4.1 has been designed to enable
you to move users across to the new release gradually. The upgrade of the End User
Layer (EUL) is non-destructiveduring the upgrade process the Release 3.1 EUL is
copied and upgraded to a Release 4.1 EUL. This allows existing users to continue
working with Discoverer Release 3.1 during the upgrade process.
This process includes the following steps:
Exporting the Release 3.1 End User Layer
Installing Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition Release 4.1
Upgrading the Release 3.1 End User Layer
Upgrading Users to Oracle Discoverer Plus Release 4.1
Removing the Release 3.1 End User Layer
Removing Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition Release 3.1

3.1 Exporting the Release 3.1 End User Layer

Before you upgrade to Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1, you must first export the EUL
tables using the standard database export. This export file is a backup of your
current EUL.

Upgrading to Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1 3-1

Installing Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition Release 4.1

1. From the Windows Start Menu, select MS-DOS Prompt (Windows95/98) or

Command Prompt (WindowsNT) to display the MS-DOS window.
2. Navigate to the directory <ORACLE_HOME>\discvr31.
For example, if the MS-DOS window currently displays C: and the <ORACLE_
HOME> directory is D:\orant, you would:
type D: and press [Return]
type cd \orant\discvr31 and press [Return]
3. At the prompt type the following command:
exp80 [EULowner]/[password] file=[filename.dmp] owner=[eulowner]

For example: exp80 HReul/HRpswrd@HRDB file=hreul.dmp

owner=hrmgr
After all of the EUL tables are exported along with all associated synonyms,
views, and other definitions, you will receive the following message:
Export terminated successfully without warnings.
Your *.dmp file is located in the <ORACLE_HOME>\discvr31 directory.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each EUL.
You are now ready to upgrade your software to Discoverer Release 4.1.

3.2 Installing Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition Release 4.1

After you have exported the Discoverer Release 3.1 EULs, install Oracle Discoverer
Administration Edition Release 4.1 by following the instructions in Chapter 2,
Installing Oracle Discoverer.

WARNING: You cannot install Discoverer Release 4.1 in the same directory
as Discoverer Release 3.1 because Release 3.1 would be disabled. Install
Discoverer Release 4.1 in a separate directory in your ORACLE_HOME, so
that you can still perform administration tasks for both versions.

3.3 Upgrading the Release 3.1 End User Layer

After you have installed Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1, you must upgrade your
Release 3.1 EUL to work with Release 4.1.

3-2 Oracle Discoverer Installation and Upgrade Guide

Upgrading the Release 3.1 End User Layer

To upgrade the EUL, the EUL owner must have the following privileges:
CREATE PROCEDURE
CREATE SESSION
CREATE TABLE
CREATE VIEW
CREATE SEQUENCE
If upgrading to an Oracle 8.1.6 (or above) database, summaries are implemented as
materialized views and the EUL owner therefore requires the following privileges:
CREATE ANY MATERIALIZED VIEW
DROP ANY MATERIALIZED VIEW
ALTER ANY MATERIALIZED VIEW

WARNING: To maintain the consistency of data transferred to the Release

4.1 EUL, it is very important that no administrator sessions are opened on
the Release 3.1 EUL while the upgrade is in progress.

1. From the Windows Start menu select Programs | Oracle Discoverer 4 |

Administration Edition.
2. Enter the user name and password of the Discoverer Release 3.1 EUL that you
want to upgrade.
The EUL Upgrade dialog box appears, through which Administration Edition
automatically prompts you to upgrade your EUL.

Upgrading to Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1 3-3

Upgrading the Release 3.1 End User Layer

Figure 31 EUL Upgrade

3. Click the check box to confirm that you have exported your Discoverer Release
3.1 EUL.

NOTE: If you have not already exported your Release 3.1 EUL, refer to
Section 3.1, Exporting the Release 3.1 End User Layer before continuing.

4. Click Upgrade.
When you choose Upgrade, a new Release 4.1 EUL is created using data copied
from the Release 3.1 EUL. The account which owns the Release 4.1 EUL will be
the same as that which owned the Release 3.1 EUL. Existing Release 3.1 users
are not affected by the upgrade.
If you are using Summary Folders with Discoverer Release 3.1, these Summary
folders have their status set to Refresh Required.
After you have chosen to upgrade the EUL, the EUL Upgrade progress bar
displays the status of the upgrade. When the upgrade is complete, the following
message appears:

Figure 32 Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition EUL upgrade notification

3-4 Oracle Discoverer Installation and Upgrade Guide

Upgrading the Release 3.1 End User Layer

The EUL upgrade is complete. You can use this EUL to connect to the database
using Discoverer Administration Edition Release 4.1. Once you are satisfied that
your EUL is ready for use, upgrade your users to Discoverer Plus Release 4.1.

3.3.1 Upgrading Managed Summary Folders

The definitions of the 3.1 Managed Summary Folders are copied into the new
Release 4.1 EUL. However, the summary data is not gathered at the time of the
upgrade. Instead, the summary refresh setting status is changed to Refresh
Required.
When the Discoverer Administrator refreshes the Managed Summary Folders, they
are refreshed in one of two ways, depending on the Oracle database being used:
Pre-8.1.6 databases - Discoverer creates Summary tables, as used in
Discoverer release 3.1.
8.1.6+ databases - Discoverer creates Materialized Views.
For more information about Summaries and Materialized Views, refer to the
Oracle8i Concepts Release 2 (8.1.6), (Part Number: A76965-01)
Once created, Summaries (in pre-8.1.6 databases) and Materilized Views (8.1.6+
databases) can then be used to optimize queries in Discoverer Plus.
1. Select Tools | Refresh Summaries. An Oracle Discoverer Administration
Edition message box appears, where you can choose to refresh your summary
folders.

Figure 33 Refresh Summaries dialog box

Upgrading to Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1 3-5

Upgrading Users to Oracle Discoverer Plus Release 4.1

2. Click Yes to refresh the summary folders immediately.

Alternatively, you can schedule the refresh directly on the database server.
Your next step is to Upgrade your users to User Edition Release 4.1. Once you are
confident that everyone is up and running in Discoverer Release 4.1, you may then
remove your 3.1 EULs and their associated summary tables.

3.3.2 A note about external summary folders

If you have summary folders external to Discoverer, refresh is still required.
External Independent Summary Folders have their metadata updated within the
EUL when they are refreshed. If you are using Oracle 8.1.6 or later, a database
Materialized View is created that references the external table.

3.4 Upgrading Users to Oracle Discoverer Plus Release 4.1

To upgrade your users, install Oracle Discoverer Plus Release 4.1 from the
Discoverer Plus CD on the client machine. The Oracle Installer automatically
installs Oracle Discoverer Release 4.1 in a separate directory from Discoverer
Release 3.1.

WARNING: You cannot install Discoverer Release 4.1 in the same directory
as Discoverer Release 3.1, as Release 3.1 would be disabled. Install
Discoverer Release 4.1 in a separate directory in your <ORACLE_HOME>,
so that you can still perform administration tasks for both versions.

Note for users upgrading from Discoverer Release 3.1:

This can be done gradually, as your users can continue to work in either
Release 3.1 or Release 4.1. While your users are using Discoverer Release
3.1 and Release 4.1 simultaneously, changes made using Administration
Edition in one version, will not be available to users of the other version.

When the user logs into Discoverer Plus the first time, Discoverer searches for any
Release 4.1 EULs that the user has access to.
If a valid EUL is found, the user connects and can proceed working in
Discoverer Release 4.1.

3-6 Oracle Discoverer Installation and Upgrade Guide

Removing the Release 3.1 End User Layer

If no valid EUL is found, Discoverer alerts the user that they cannot connect to
the database. The user should contact the administrator. Note that the user can
still use Discoverer Release 3.1 User Edition against the existing Release 3.1
EUL.
After Discoverer Plus Release 4.1 is installed and a connection to the database has
been established through a Release 4.1 EUL, remove Discoverer User Edition
Release 3.1 from the users machine using the Oracle Installer from the Discoverer
Release 4.1 CD-ROM.
When all users have been upgraded to Discoverer Plus Release 4.1, remove the
Discoverer Release 3.1 EUL and its associated tables from the database. See
Section 3.5, Removing the Release 3.1 End User Layer for more information. This
procedure will free up the tablespace that was required to copy these tables to the
Release 4.1 EUL.

3.5 Removing the Release 3.1 End User Layer

Once you have upgraded your users to Discoverer Release 4.1 and they are
successfully connecting to the database through your Release 4.1 EUL, remove the
Release 3.1 EUL. This is done through a SQL script, which will remove the Release
3.1 EUL and all associated tables, including Managed Summary Folders.
1. From the Program Group, Oracle for Windows95/NT, run SQL Plus 8.0.
2. Log in as the EUL owner with the EUL password and connect string.
3. Run the SQL script as described below:

Removing Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition Release 3.1

Dropping 3.1 End User Layer Tables ...

Removing public synonyms (if any) ...
Connected.

Finished removing 3.1 End User Layer.

If there are summary jobs owned by users other than the EUL owner, the
upgrade will interrupted with the following message:
The following users have managed summaries which must be dropped before
this EUL can be deinstalled:
User: SCOTT, Summary: Scott's Summary
User: FRED, Summary: Fred's Summary
etc.
Quitting - no changes made.

If this message appears then the specified users must log into Administration
Edition Release 3.1 and remove the specified summaries. See Chapter 8 of the
Oracle Discoverer Administration Guide, Using the Summary Wizard. Once
these summaries have been dropped, rerun the script eul31del.sql in order to
drop the Release 3.1 EUL.
Refer to the readme.html file on your Discoverer Release 4.1 CD for more
information on installing or upgrading Oracle Discoverer.
