Computing Narayana Dasa

Steps:

(1) Take lagna and 7th from it. See which is stronger. (Rule 1 of strength: A sign occupied by
more planets is stronger. Other rules: see Sanjay's first book.)

(2) Start dasas from that sign. Based on whether the 9th from that sign is odd-footed or even-
footed, dasas will progress in *forward* (Ar, Ta, Ge, Cn etc) or *backward* (Pi, Aq, Cp, Sg etc)
order. [Note: Ar, Ta, Ge and Li, Sc, Sg are odd-footed signs. Rest are even-footed.]

(3) Based on the initiating sign, use one of the 3 progressions:

(a) If the initiating sign is moveable (chara), progression is regular.

Examples: Aries (forward) - Ar, Ta, Ge, Cn etc; Cancer (backward) - Cn, Ge, Ta, Ar etc.

(b) If the initiating sign is fixed (sthira), progression is every 6th.

 Examples: Leo (forward) - Le, Cp, Ge, Sc, Ar etc; Taurus (backward) - Ta, Sg,Cn, Aq,
Vi, Ar etc.

(c) If the initiating sign is dual (dwiswabhava), progression is 5th, 9th, 10thetc (i.e.
finish trines and move to the next set of trines).

Examples: Virgo (forward) - Vi, Cp, Ta, Ge, Li, Aq, Pi, Cn etc; Taurus (backward) - Ge,
Aq, Li, Vi, Ta, Cp, Sg, Le etc.

(4) This is the sequence. Now we have to find the years in each dasa.

(a) Count from dasa sign to dasa sign's lord. In the case of Scorpio and Aquarius, take
the stronger of two lords. (Check rules of strength in Sanjay's book.)

(b) If the dasa sign is odd-footed, count forward and count backward if it is even-footed.

(c) Subtract 1 year from it.

(d) If lord is in that sign itself, it is 12 years.

Examples: (a) Ar dasa is of 2, 6, 10 and 12 years if Mars is in Ge, Li, Aq and Ar

respectively.
(b) Le dasa is of 2, 6, 9 and 12 years if Sun is in Ge, Aq, Sc and Le respectively.

(5) If lord is debilitated, subtract 1 year and add 1 year if lord is exalted (exception: Mercury's
exaltation. It counts just as own house).

Examples: (a) If Mars is in Cp, Ar dasa is of 10 years. If Mars is in Cn, Ar dasa is of 2 years.
(b) If Sun is in Ar, Le dasa is of 5 years. If Sun is in Li, Le dasa is of 9 years.
(c) If Jupiter is in Cn, Sg dasa is of 8 years and Pi dasa is of 9 years. If Jupiter is in Cp, Sg dasa
is of 0 years and Pi dasa is of 1 year.

(6) After dasas of all the 12 signs are over, start the second cycle. Sequence is the same as the
first cycle, but dasa years will be 12 minus previous cycle years.

Example: If we have "Ar: 4yrs, Ta: 2yrs, Ge: 11yrs etc" in the first cycle, second cycle will be
"Ar: 8yrs, Ta: 10yrs, Ge:1yr etc".

Rules for Antardasas:

(1) Find the stronger of dasa sign and the 7th from it.

(2) Take the lord of that sign. See the rasi occupied by him. Start antardasas from there.

(3) If it is an odd sign, go forward. If it is an even sign, go backward. In either case, go in the
regular order.

Examples: (1) Leo (forward) - Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg etc (2) Taurus (backward) - Ta, Ar, Pi, Aq, Cp
etc
(4) All 12 antardasas are of equal duration. So if dasa is of n years, all antardasas will be of n
months.

[Note: 1 year=12 months, 1 month=30 days, 1 day=1 degree motion of Sun]

I have left a few things: (1) A few exceptions, (2) Narayana dasa of divisional charts and (3)
How to weigh the strengths of signs and planets. I may write later. Read Sanjay's books
meanwhile.

Now let us take Donna's chart as an example, as requested by Donna.

Your rasi chart: Rahu in Ar; Moon in Cn; Saturn in Le; Ketu in Li; Jupiter in Cp; Lagna, Sun,
Mars, Mercury and Venus in Aq.

(1) Lagna is in Aq. We have to compare the strengths of Aq and Le. Aq is stronger with 4
planets (as opposed to 1 in Le). Start from Aq.

(2) From Aq, 9th is Libra, an odd-footed sign. So proceed in *forward* order.

(3) Since Aq is a fixed (sthira) sign, 3(b) applies. Progression is every 6th (see examples under
3(b)). Also it is forward from (2) above.

So the dasa sequence is: Aq, Cn, Sg, Ta, Li, Pi, Le, Cp, Ge, Sc, Ar, Vi.

(4) Aq: Rahu is stronger than Saturn (why? Later). Because Aq is even-footed, count backward
from Aq to Ar (where Aq's lord Rahu is). Ar is the 11th house Aq, counting backwards. Subtract
1 and you get 10. Aq dasa is for 10 years.

Cn: It is again even-footed. But lord Moon is in Cancer. So give 12 years.

Sg: It is odd-footed and count forward. Jupiter is in 2nd from Sg. So 2-1=1 year. But he is
debilitated. Subtract one year and it becomes 0. So Sg dasa is 0 years in first cycle (whole of Sg
dasa - 12 years - will come in the second cycle).

Ta dasa: Ta is odd-footed and so count forward. Venus is in 10th from Ta (in Aq). So give 10-
1=9 years.

And so on.

You get:

Now let me give an example for antardasas.

Take Leo dasa (85-91). Find the stronger of Le and Aq (dasa sign and 7th from it). Aq is
stronger. Take its lord. It is Rahu (who is, as mentioned earlier, stronger than Saturn). He is in
Aries. Start there. It is an odd sign. So proceed forward. Antardasa of 6 months each are: Ar,
Ta, Ge, Cn etc.

The following text gives comprehensive explanation on the usage and computation of
NarayanaDasa alias Rasi Padakrama Dasa.

This dasa is the hallmark of the Jaimini Sutras and is in the authors opinion the best for all
predictive purposes. This dasa is powerful because it can also be extended to the divisional
charts.

The Steps:

Dasa Progression

(a) Take lagna and 7th from it. Take the stronger.
(b) Start dasas from that sign. Based on whether the 9th from that sign is odd-footed or even-
footed, dasas will progress in *Zodiacal* (Ar, Ta, Ge, Cn ... Pi) or *Anti-Zodiacal* (Pi, Aq, Cp,
Sg ... Ar) order. [Note: Ar, Ta, Ge and Li, Sc, Sg are odd-footed signs. Rest are even-footed.]
See chart below. The houses with blue shade are ODD_FOOTED the rest are EVEN-FOOTED.

(c) Based on the initiating sign, use one of the 3 progressions:

(aa) If the initiating sign is moveable (chara), progression is regular.
Examples:

Counting of Years

(a) Count from dasa sign to dasa sign's lord. In the case of Scorpio and Aquarius, take the
stronger of two lords.
(b) If the dasa sign is odd-footed, count forward and count backward if it is even-footed.

(c) If lord is in that sign itself, it is 12 years. Do not go to step (d).
(d) Subtract 1 year from it.
Examples: (a) Ar dasa is of 2, 6, 10 and 12 years if
Mars is in Ge, Li, Aq and Ar respectively.
(b) Le dasa is of 2, 6, 9 and 12 years if
Sun is in Ge, Aq, Sc and Le respectively.
(e) If lord is debilitated, subtract 1 year and add 1 year if lord is exalted.
(EXCEPTION: Mercury's exaltation. It counts just as own house, hence Mercury in Virgo will
get 12 years).
Examples: (a) If Mars is in Cp, Ar dasa is of 10 years.
If Mars is in Cn, Ar dasa is of 2 years.
(b) If Sun is in Ar, Le dasa is of 5 years.
If Sun is in Li, Le dasa is of 9 years.
(c) If Jupiter is in Cn, Sg dasa is of 8 years and
Pi dasa is of 9 years.
(d) If Jupiter is in Cp, Sg dasa is of 0 years and
Pi dasa is of 1 year.
(f) After dasas of all the 12 signs are over, start the second cycle. Sequence is the same as the
first cycle, but dasa years will be 12 minus previous cycle years.
Example: If we have "Ar: 4yrs, Ta: 2yrs, Ge: 11yrs etc" in the first cycle,

Antaradasa

(a) Find the stronger of dasa sign and the 7th from it. ( Refer to the section on Strengths ).
(b) Take the lord of that sign. See the rasi occupied by him. Start antardasas from there.
(c) If it is an odd sign, go forward. If it is an even sign, go backward.
In either case, go in the regular order.
Examples: (1) Leo (forward) - Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg etc.
(2) Taurus (backward) - Ta, Ar, Pi, Aq, Cp etc
(d) All 12 antardasas are of equal duration.

So if dasa is of n years, all antardasas will be of n months.

[Note: 1 year=12 months, 1 month=30 days, 1 day=1 degree motion of Sun]

Strength
For comparing the strengths of Rahu/Saturn & Ketu/Mars:

(a) First see if one lord is in that sign. If so, other lord is stronger. For example, if Saturn is in
Aquarius, then invariably Rahu should be taken as its lord.

(b) If one of the above houses is with a larger number of planets, then he is stronger.

(c) "SWAAMI GURUJNA DRIGYOGAHA". If one of them is aspected (SIGN ASPECT or RASI
DRISHTI) by more out of
(aa) Jupiter, (bb) Mercury and (cc) dispositor, then he is stronger.
These carry equal weight.
Example : Lets assume that we are considering Le & Aq(1/7).
Lets also assume that Le is aspected by Ju & Aq by Me, and their lords do not aspect
their respective signs.
Then there is a tie.
When looking for the aspect of lord/dispositor, you can settle for aspect from either lord, but
you have to use the stronger lord in all other rules.

(d) If one of them is exalted, then he is stronger (opposite for debilitation).

(e) One occupying a sign of higher natural strength (Dual>Fixed>Movable) is stronger.

(f) One giving more years is stronger.

(g) A sign whose lord is more advanced in longitude from the beginning of its sign is stronger.
Rahu and Ketu's advancement should be measured from the end of sign rather than beginning.

For comparing the strengths of 1/7 houses

(a) If one of the above houses is with a larger number of planets, then he is stronger.
(b) "SWAAMI GURUJNA DRIGYOGAHA". If one of them is aspected (SIGN ASPECT or RASI
DRISHTI) by more out of
(aa) Jupiter, (bb) Mercury and (cc) dispositor, then he is stronger.
These carry equal weight.
Example : Lets assume that we are considering Le & Aq(1/7).
Lets also assume that Le is aspected by Ju & Aq by Me, and their lords
donot aspect their respective signs.
Then there is a tie.
When looking for the aspect of lord/dispositor, you can settle for
aspect from either lord, but you have to use the stronger lord in all other
rules.

(c) A sign with its lord in a sign with a different oddity (odd/even) is
stronger than a sign with its lord in a sign with the same oddity.

(d) A sign whose lord is more advanced in longitude from the beginning of its sign is stronger.
Rahu and Ketu's advancement should be measured from the end of sign rather than beginning.

Exceptions

(a) Presence of Saturn/Ketu in the stronger of (1/7 houses) will modify

dasa/antardasa sequence.
Saturn makes it go Zodiacally & Regular and Ketu reverses it, no matter what.
Note : The house winning the 1/7 battle and initiating the dasa/antaradasa
cycle has to have the above mentioned planets. This has to be kept
in mind specially for antaradasa, where the cycle is initiated from
the sign occupied by the winner of 1/7 battle.
Example : Le/Aq are fighting it out for anatardasa sequence.
say, Le wins, & Su is in Ar, then Sequence is Ar, Ta, Ge ...etc,
but if Ketu were to be present in Le, then sequence, would be
Ar, Pi, Aq etc. Even if Ketu were to be in Ar with Su, then it
would progress as Ar, Ta, Ge in regular order.
Most importantly for this exception to work Saturn/Ketu has to be
in *STRONGER* OF 1/7 houses.

(b) Supposing Saturn and Ketu occupy the same sign.

Answer : Experiment.

(c) One year is deducted only if the debilitated planet is taken as the lord.
If you take Ketu as the lord and find dasa years based on Ketu, exaltation or
debilitation of Mars no longer matters. (Of course, you have to add/subtract one
year from Aries dasa, because Mars is its only lord.)

Clarification on strength

QUESTION BY MR.ROBERT

There is an example of Narayana dasa that is given by Sanjay in COVA (Crux of Vedic
Astrology), that contradicts one of the basic rules of calculation that we discussed last May.
Please refer to page 393 of that book, where Sanjay is discussing the chart of Srimata Sarada,
wife of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. In the last paragraph of that page, he states as follows:

" TIMING MARRIAGE: The 7th house Capricorn is stronger than the ascendant. Hence, it
shall initiate the Narayana dasas. The antaradasa (1st one) shall begin from Taurus occupied
by Saturn, lord of Capricorn and shall be direct (due to Saturn). " ["Direct" here refers to
forward sequential motion].

So this is exactly as we were instructed. In order for Saturn or Ketu to alter the sequence of
antaradasas, they must be in the stronger of the 1st or 7th of the major period sign, *NOT* in
the antardasa sign itself. In the above example of Sarada Mata's marriage dasa, Saturn should
not alter the sequence of sub-periods, because he is not in the stronger of 1st and 7th.
He is instead in the beginning antaradasa sign (Taurus).

Why does Sanjay thus say that the AD's should go in direct order? Any responses from he
learned list members would be appreciated.

Sanjay should be able to answer that better.

I taught you exactly how I understood it from what Sanjay personally taught me.

If Saturn/Ketu is in the stronger sign of 1st/7th from dasa sign (and not the sign containing the
lord of this stronger sign), then the exceptions apply. Otherwise antardasas in Cp dasa will
always be forward.

In the above example on p.393, antardasas in Cp dasa should, as far as I know/understand,

proceed in the backward order from Ta and not in the forward order as given in the book.

However, this makes no difference as the antardasa of focus is Sc, the 7th from Ta! Whether
you go forward or backward, you get the same sign as the 7th.

Either there was an oversight by Sanjay or I understood the rules incorrectly. Hopefully Sanjay
will correctly instruct us on these exceptions.

ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH

"Sanau Che Tyeke" is difficult to interpret. My understanding is that if the influence of Saturn
dominates the decision on the order, then it shall be regular or Zodiacal. This can happen if
either saturn is placed in the Arambha rasi or in the Dasa rasi. These are both important as one
is akin to Paka Lagna and the other akin to Lagna.

Similarly for Ketu the revere applies. Thus in the case of Sarada Ma, the presence of Sani in the
Paka of the dasa rasi or the Arambha Rasi shall dominate the decision of regular reckoning of
antardasa.
When both Saturn and Ketu influence, the situation is even more difficult to judge. If both are
together in a sign, then the one with a higher longitude shall dominate. If they are in separate
signs like one in dasa Rasi and the other in Arambha rasi, thentheir strenghts are to be
judged as per the strengths of signs.

In this manner the movement of the antardasa are to be determined.

QUESTION BY MR.ROBERT

YOU WROTE: "As far as I know, if Saturn is in the stronger of dasa sign and 7th from it, we do
have to make antardasas go backward, irrespective of where dasa lord is."

Don't you mean "forward", and not "backward", if Saturn is in the stronger of dasa sign and 7th
from it?

Yes.

I am giving some examples.

* * *

DASAS:

(1) Lagna is in Ta and Ta is stronger than Sc. Neither Saturn nor Kewtu is in Ta.

Ta is fixed. So progression is "every 6th". Cp (9th from Ta) is even-footed. So direction is

"backward" (anti-zodiacal).

So dasas go as: Ta, Sg, Cn, Aq, Vi, Ar etc.

(2) Same as (1), but Saturn occupies Ta. Now dasa sequence becomes regular and zodiacal.

So dasas go as: Ta, Ge, Cn, Le, Vi, Li etc.

(3) Same as (1), but Ketu occupies Ta. Now dasa sequence becomes reversed (from anti-
zodiacal/backward to zodiacal/forward).

So dasas go as: Ta, Li, Sg, Le, Cp, Ge etc.

ANTARDASAS - SET 1:

(4) Dasa sign is Ge and Ge is stronger than Sg. Lord Mercury is in Sc. Neither Saturn nor Ketu
is in Ge.

Lord of dasa sign is in Sc. Sc is even (not even-footed). So we have go backward (anti-
zodiacal).

So antardasas go as: Sc, Li, Vi, Le, Cn, Ge etc.

(5) Same as (4), but Saturn occupies dasa sign Ge (not Sc!). Antardasas now become zodiacal.

So antardasas go as: Sc, Sg, Cp, Aq, Pi, Ar etc.

(6) Same as (4), but Ketu occupies dasa sign Ge (not Sc!). Antardasas now become reversed
(from anti-zodiacal to zodiacal).

So antardasas go as: Sc, Sg, Cp, Aq, Pi, Ar etc.

ANTARDASAS - SET 2:

(7) Dasa sign is Ta and Ta is stronger than Sc. Lord Venus is in Le. Neither Saturn nor Ketu is
in Ta.

Lord of dasa sign is in Le. Le is odd (not odd-footed). So we have go forward (zodiacal).

So antardasas go as: Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Cp etc.

(8) Same as (7), but Saturn occupies dasa sign Ta (not Le!). Antardasas have to be zodiacal
(which they anyway are, even without this exception).

So antardasas go as: Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Cp etc.

(9) Same as (7), but Ketu occupies dasa sign Ta (not Le!). Antardasas now become reversed
(from zodiacal to anti-zodiacal).

So antardasas go as: Le, Cn, Ge, Ta, Ar, Pi etc.

If you look at the nine examples above carefully, all the cases will become clear. Except, of
course, tricky situations like Saturn and Ketu both being in the stronger of 1st and 7th from
lagna or dasa sign. I don't want to offer any solutions to such tricky problems.

Narayana Dasa in Divisional charts

QUESTION BY MR.ROBERT

In Sanjay's book "Crux of Vedic Astrology", he states that the sign occupied by the lord of the
4th in the Rasi chart, should initiate the D-4 Narayana dasas. Is this the method you use for
other Varga Narayana dasas, namely taking (1) the sign occupied by the lord of the related
house in the Rasi chart; and then (2) making that sign the first dasa in the related varga chart?
Or, do you just calculate Varga Narayana dasas exactly as you would for the Rasi Narayana
dasas?
ANSWER BY MR.NARASIMHA RAO

Your first approach is almost what I do. But I don't take the "related house". If I am looking at
divisional chart D-n, I take n'th house. I see n'th house in rasi chart, find its lord and take the rasi
occupied by him in D-n. (Note: If n12, divide it by 12 and take the remainder.) I take that rasi as
lagna and then find Narayana dasa just as in the case of rasi chart. For example, for your D-24
Narayana dasa, I took 24th lord (i.e. 12th lord) in your rasi chart - Mercury. I took the rasi
occupied by him in your D-24 - Virgo. So I took the stronger of Virgo and Pisces (Virgo) and
initiated D-24 Narayana dasa from there. (Note: Virgo happens to be your D-24 lagna too! So,
looking at my previously given calculations for your D-24, you may have thought that I follow the
second approach above. This example can be misleading when you try to find my "rules" from
my "calculations"). I was taught the above by Sanjay. He, I think, was taught by his elders. He
also advised me to experiment with "relevant house" approach (i.e. take the 4th lord instead of
12th lord when finding D-24 Narayana dasa). I do it for some special purposes, but my normal
approach is to take the nth lord when looking at D-n. First it did not make sense to me, but I
found it to work better in more charts. The matters D-n (nth harmonic chart) stands for have a
close and subtle link with nth house and this rule captures that link. We understand so little
about the subtleties of these issues that we cannot say "it makes more sense to me if we
take...". Whatever we think - that the nth house should be taken or relevant house - is a matter
of opinion and not of logic. What makes sense to us is irrelevant (just as in the 0 year case).
There is no logic here. We can only attempt both and draw our conclusions.

EXAMPLE OF DIVISIONAL CHART NARAYANA DASA BY MR.NARASIMHA RAO

Birthdata: 4th April 1970, 5:50 pm (IST: 5:30E), 81e12, 16n15

Event data: 5th December 1996, 6:45 pm (EST: 5:00W), 71w12, 42n30
Event: Vehicular accident in which vehicle was totalled (i.e. insurance company found it cheaper
to give a new car than to repair the car)

For vehicles, Parasara recommeded looking at D-16. Here lagna in rasi chart is Virgo.
D-16 here: Mercury, Rahu & Ketu in Ta; Mars in Ge; Lagna in Cn; Venus in Le; Jupiter in Vi;
Sun & Moon in Sc; Saturn in Sg.
Let us compute D-16 Narayana dasa and see if the event makes sense using the principles
explained before. Especially, let us look at prana-antardasa and test my varga transit principle.

DASA SEQUENCE:

"Shodasamsa (D-16) Narayana dasa" starts from the sign occupied in D-16 by 4th lord in rasi
chart (because 4 is the remainder when 16 is divided by 12). Here Virgo is lagna in rasi chart
and Jupiter is 4th lord. He is in Vi in D-16. So dasas start from the stronger of Vi and 7th from it
(i.e., Pi). Because Pi has no planets and Vi has one planet, Vi is stronger. Vi starts dasas.
Vi is a dual sign and so the progression is "every 5th". Ta is 9th from Vi and it is an odd-footed
sign (odd-footed signs are Ar, Ta, Ge, Li, Sc and Sg). So the direction is "zodiacal".
Dasas go as Vi, Cp, Ta, Ge, Li, Aq, Pi, Cn, Sc, Sg, Ar, Le.

DASA DURATIONS:

Vi is even-footed. Count backwards. Mercury is in Ta, i.e. 5th from Vi. We get 5-1=4 years.
1970-74.
Cp is even-footed. Count backwards. Saturn is in Sg, i.e. 2nd from Cp. We get 2-1=1 years.
1974-75.
Ta is odd-footed. Count forward. Venus is in Le, i.e. 4th from Ta. We get 4-1=3 years. 1975-78.
Ge is odd-footed. Count forward. Mercury is in Ta, i.e. 12th from Ge. We get 12-1=11 years.
1978-89.
Li is odd-footed. Count forward. Venus is in Le, i.e. 11th from Li. We get 11-1=10 years. 1989-
99.

DASA DIVISIONS:

Dividing periods into 12 equal sub-periods, you can find antardasas (AD), pratyantardasas (PD),
sookshma-antardasas (SD), prana-antardasas (PAD) in this mahadasa. Just remember to use
Sun's longitude as a measure of time and divide periods equally in terms of Sun's longitude
change.
Or open my rasi dasa division program. Enter birthdata, event data, 10 years under "length of
dasa", 1989 under "dasa started in year" and select "find sub-periods upto 6th level at the date
and time given below". The output is:
Given MD - 10th AD - 3rd PD - 5th SD - 7th PAD - 5th DAD
Now let us find what all these stand for.

AD:

MD is Li. We have to find the stronger of Li and the 7th from it (Ar). Neither is occupied. Look at
rasi aspects from Mercury, Jupiter and lord. Jupiter aspects neither sign. Mercury aspects only
Li. Lord Venus aspects Li, but lord Mars doesn't aspect Ar. So the count is zero for Ar and two
for Li. Li is stronger. Start from Venus. He is in Le, an odd sign. So the progression is "regular
zodiacal". Antardasas go as Le, Vi, Li etc. The 10th AD is Ta.

PD:
AD is Ta. Find the stronger of Ta and Sc. Ta with 3 planets is stronger than Sc with 2 planets.
Lord Venus is in Le, an odd sign. Antardasas should normally go as Le, Vi, Li etc.
However, Ketu is in Taurus (dasa sign). So the exception "Ketoh vipareetam" applies and the
order is reversed. So PDs go as Le, Cn, Ge, Ta etc. The 3rd PD is Ge.

SD (sookshma dasa):

PD is Ge. Find the stronger of Ge and Sg. Both have one planets each. Look for aspects (or
occupancy) from lord, Jupiter and Mercury. Ge is aspected by only Jupiter. Sg is aspected by
Jupiter and its lord (Jupiter again). Its count of two beats Ge's count of one. So Sg is stronger.
Sg initiated sub-periods. Look at the sign containing Sg's lord. Jupiter is in Virgo.
Virgo is an even sign and the order should normally be Vi, Le, Cn, Ge etc. However, here
Saturn occupies Sg. So the exception "Sanou chetyeke" applies and the direction becomes
zodiacal. So SDs go as Vi, Li, Sc, Sg etc. The 5th SD is Cp.

PAD (prana dasa):

SD is Cp. Find the stronger of Cp and Cn. Neither is occupied. Look for aspects from Mercury,
Jupiter and lord. Jupiter aspects neither. Mercury aspects both. Lord Saturn doesn't aspect Cp,
but lord Moon aspects Cn from Sc. So Cn is stronger (count of 2 as opposed to 1 of Cp).
Start sub-periods from Moon, who is in Sc. Sc is an even sign and so the progression is anti-
zodical. PADs are Sc, Li, Vi, Le etc. The 7th PAD is Ta.
So the prana-antardasa running at the time of the event is
Li MD - Ta AD - Ge PD - Cp SD - Ta PAD.

Libra is the 4th house. Its dasa shows happiness from vehicles. This native bought a 2-wheel
vehicle and later a car in this dasa. This dasa brought him happiness from vehicles. The event
under focus was only an aberration in this otherwise good dasa.
AD is Ta. It is the 12th house from A4 (vahana pada, arudha pada of 4th - it represents vehicle).
It has nodes. This antardasa is bad. It not only gave an accident, but forced him to buy a new
car at a bad muhurta. During the next 6 months (Ta's antardasa still), the new car received
several damages in parking lots and the native got rid of the "unlucky" car and bought another
car when the next AD started. He has been happy with the new car.
Basically, being a dusthana from A4 and containing nodes makes Ta a bad sign. Accidents,
damages to the vehicle and change of vehicle are possible then.
PD is Ge. It contains Mars, significator of accidents. Moreover, Mars owns 6th from A4.
SD is Cp. It is the 8th house from A4 and its lord is in 7th from A4. It is a maraka sthana for the
car.
Basically, Sc, Cp and Ta are dusthanas from A4 and they are likely to be active when the car is
damaged in an accident (note: this accident totally destroyed the car, but no individual had any
injury).
PAD is Ta. I said earlier that prana-antardasa should be interpreted based on transits in
vargas. Look at transits in D-16 at that time. Taurus was occupied in D-16 at the time of
the event by Rahu and Ketu!! So the prana-antardasa was conducive to an accident.

When Narayana dasa is computed correctly, it will work upto very low levels in a consistent
fashion. However, the rules as I taught you may not be final. Experiment and search for truth.

For Education, Learning & Intellectual Activities D-24 is the chart. To know the type of learning
or the field of learning, look at the 4H in D24, along with influences on 4L.

In your D-24, Lagna is in Aq, 4H is Ta, is aspected by Sa & Ve. 4L is aspected by Su.
4H has strong argalas from Me & Mo. 4L has aspects & Strong argalas from Me & Mo.

Sa can give interests in History. Me can give interests in Computers, Astrology etc.
Su shows Management studies.

But if your Lagna is moved back to Cp. Then 4H has strong aspect & argala from Sun. Showing
Management related Studies.
4L has aspects from Nodes & Ju. Ju shows astrology. 4H is aspected by Me shows Computers.

Moreover A4 which shows Maya related to learning i.e the type of School etc. is in Aq with Sun
in it. Which shows that it may be a prestigious institute with focus on Management studies. A4
has argalas from Ma shows dynamism/entrepreunerial approach etc.
Also Aq has argalas from Ju & Nodes shows other influences on your *school* like it will be
Philosophical/spiritual oriented but unconventional for example this forum has great gurus(Ju in
Sg) but thru internet not a regular school.

But this is not conclusive enough.

Lets see which Narayana Dasa you are running as per D24.

Here's the equation :

24 modulo 12 gives 12.

Take 12 Lord in D1, which is Ma.

Look at the sign in which Ma is posited in D24. It is Pi.

Now consider the stronger of Pi/Vi.
Pi is stronger as it has more planets.

Progression is 1, 5, 9, 10 etc.
The sequence is Pi, Cn, Sc, Sg, Ar, Le, Vi, Cp, Ta, Ge, Li, Aq.

Pi : 03y : 74 - 77
Cn : 11y : 77 - 87
Sc : 01y : 87 - 88
Sg : 12y : 88 - 2000 <--- Sg Dasa running now.
Ar : 11y : 2000 - 2011

Now AD :

Sg is stronger than Ge.

Sg's lord Ju is in Sg. Sg is odd sign hence seq should be Sg, Cp, ...Sc.
But Ketu is present hence Sequence is reversed, it will be Sg, Sc, ... Cp.

Each AD is approx 1year.

Lets start from the end as its closer to the current date.

Cp : Aug 99 - Aug 2000 <--- Ad running now.

Aq : Aug 98 - Aug 99

So summing up you are running Sg - Cp of D24 Narayana Dasa.

Sg has Ju & Nodes.

Firstly Nodes represents obstacles. But Ju kind of tempers it & provides some direction.
Moreover being a benefic sign the result wont be too dire.

Ju can show interests in Astrology/Philosophy.

Ke exalted can give spiritual interests.
Ra provides mischief/indifference to studies/distraction.

Its as if interests in Astrology/Philosophy will distarct you away from your formal studies.
Cp has Sa shows obstacles, but also shows that you wil be working really hard during the next
one year. Its also aspected by Me & Mo.

If Cp is the D24 Lagna then Me becomes the 6L in 8H gives vipareeta Raja yoga showing that
initially it will be rough but in the end you will emerge victorius.

From 2000 onwards you will be also interested in Computers/MIS etc.

BTW if your lagna is Cp in D24 then your Lagna in D1 will be between 6.15d - 7.45d. in Sg.

You can use other events and rectify it.

Your calculations of rasi Narayana dasa are perfect. D-24 Narayana dasa
is almost correct. You wrote:

No, 77 + 11 = 88. After subtracting one, perhaps you subconsciously subtracted another
one!

Sanjay teaches that Rahu and Ketu are exalted in Ge and Sg respectively. Though this
is wrong as per today's versions of BPHS, it may be because of text corruption. We
should follow Sanjay's teachings.

Ketu is stronger than Mars. Ketu is in 2nd from Sc and so you wrote 2-1=1y for Sc.
However Ketu is *exalted* in Sg and add one year. Answer:

Sc : 02y : 88 - 90

> Sg : 12y : 88 - 2000 <--- Sg Dasa running now.

> Ar : 11y : 2000 - 2011

Shift by 2 years and recalculate ADs.

Primarily, mahadasas are analyzed from Sun and ADs from Moon. This principle of Rath
family applies to Narayana dasa of divisional charts as well. Because Pi is the 8th from
Moon, it can denote some troubles in studies. It also denotes occult and its lord Jupiter
aspects it from 5th from Moon. So astrological studies and occult studies are also
possible in Pi AD.

Taking AD sign Pi as lagna, 4th and 5th lords are in 6th. This suggests not doing well in
studies in this antardasa. Next AD Aq is not only the 7th from Moon, but the 4th lord from
Aq is in own sign in a trine (from Aq) and 5th lord from Aq is in 7th. So Aq antardasa will
be much better for studies.
 [As a matter of fact, even now other people may not really think that Sarajit is doing
badly. Taking Pi as lagna, we get arudha lagna in Ge and the 5th therefrom is powerful.]

By changing the dates, you can verify that he is running Pi AD and not Cp.

Around Last week of september I got off my previous project and was on the bench for 3 days
or so( I am a computer consultant ). I had some time to look at my D10.

For benefit of the readers I am giving my D10:

Asc, Mars : Vi
Ju, HL : Li
Ke, AL : Sc
Sa, GL : Cp
Ve, A10 : Aq
Mo : Pi
Me : Ar
Ra : Ta
Su : Le

GL is in Cp with Saturn in it.

Here's the Narayana Dasa for D10.

10L in D1 is Saturn.
Saturn is in Cp.
Cp is stronger than Cn.
Normally the sequence is Cp, Sg, Sc... Aq.
But since Saturn is posited in the initiating sign the exception applies and hence the sequence is
Cp, Aq, ... Sg. The progression being regular as Cp being a movable sign.

Cp : 12y : 71 - 83
Aq : 9y : 83 - 92 ( Rahu rules Aq )
Pi : 5y : 92 - 97
Ar : 5y : 97 - 2002

So Ar is running from 97 - 2002.

Using Rasi Dasa Division Software or manually one can find out the AD running was that of Cn
from May 28 to Oct 30 1999.

I observed that Cn AD was running. Cn had strong Argala from Sun in Le. I was wondering that
it should give some managerial activity or something similar to that as Sun indicates
management and its in Leo at that!!!
Moreover the next AD is that of Le with Sun!!!!.

Here's what happened:

Around Sept 29th I got a call from one of the project managers that I am assigned to a project
as a team lead with 5 people under me!!!!!

Also GL is in Cp. From Oct 30 Le AD started. Signs aspecting GL tend to give promotion/power
and thats what exactly happened. It happened in AD of Cn as Cn has argala from Sun/Le which
aspects GL.

Also observe that Le is the 12H from Lagna(Self) and I am now temporarily residing in Rhode
Island, visiting home once in 15 days.

I was trying Narayana Dasa, with my D4, and the event being my comming to US. This
happened on Jan 4 95. Here's my calculation: My Ascendant in D1 is Aries. So 4H lord is Mo.
Mo is in Le. So we have to figure out stronger between Le/Aq. Le wins as more planets are
aspecting it.

Your calculation is wrong and that's why you cannot explain the event.

As = Li, Ra = Li, Ma = Cp, Sa = Cp, Ju = Aq, Me = Ar,
Ke = Ar, Ve = Ge, Su = Cn, Mo = Le

Let me go through the steps.

(1) In rasi, 4th lord is Moon. He is in Le in D-4. See the stronger of Le and Aq (7th from Le). (2)
See the number of occupants. Le has one (Moon) and Aq also has one (Jupiter). We have a tie.
(3) See how many planets out of (a) Jupiter, (b) Mercury and (c) lord of the rasi, occupy or
aspect the rasi. The one with a higher number is stronger. We have to use rasi aspects. Here Le
is aspected by Mercury. Sun and Jupiter do NOT aspect it. Count is one. Aq is occupied by
Jupiter and aspected by Mercury and Rahu (one of the two lords). So count is three. So Aq (3)
is stronger than Le (1). So Aq starts dasas and NOT Le as you have taken. That's your
mistake and that cues everything.

Dasas:
Aq: 1 year (71-72) (Saturn is stronger than Rahu, being with another planet) Cn: 11 years (72-
83) Sg: 2 years (83-85) Ta: 1 year (85-86) Li: 8 years (86-94) Pi: 1 year (94-95)

You started Pi-Li-Ar on 4th Jan 1995. In Pi dasa (Apr 94-Apr 95), antardasas start from the
stronger of Pi and Vi. Both have zero planets. Neither is occupied/aspected by Jupiter or
Mercury or its lord. Both are dual signs (and equal in natural strength). Both are even and lords
are in odd signs (a sign with lord in a sign of different oddity (odd/even) is stronger than a sign
with lord in a sign of the same oddity).
Because we have a tie, we compare longitudes of Jupiter and Mercury (lords of the two signs).
Jupiter is more advanced and so Pi is stronger than Vi. Its lord Jupiter is in Aq (in D-4).
So antardasas progress as Aq, Pi, Ar, Ta, Ge etc. Libra antardasa runs from 26th Dec 1994 to
25th Jan 1995 (approx).

In Li antardasa, pratyantardasas start from the stronger of Li and Ar (7th from Li). With 2
planets, Ar is stronger. Ar contains Ketu and so the exception applies. Lord of Ar is Mars and he
is in Cp, an even sign (so backward). Normally pratyantardasas should be Cp, Sg, Sc, Li etc.
However, Ketu's presence in Ar means we have to reverse the direction and so we get Cp, Aq,
Pi, Ar etc.
Natal Sun is at 12Ar40. One-year Pi dasa started in April 1994 when Sun reached 12Ar40 and
lasts till Sun reaches 12Ar40 in April 1995. Li antardasa (9th) runs when Sun is between
12Sg40 and 12Cp40.
Each pratyantardasa will last 30/12 degrees, i.e. 2.5 degrees. So 4th antardasa (Ar) starts when
Sun enters 20Sg10 (12Sg40+3x2.5deg) and lasts 2.5 days. This corresponds to Jan
4-6, 1995. So I wrote above that Pi-Li-Ar was running.

Apart from being a watery sign aspected by 9th and 12th, Pi is not really a strong candidate.
Jupiter is the lord of dasa sign Pi and his rasi transit in Sc (9th from Pi!) in Jan 1995 must've
played a role.
However, antardasa and pratyantardasa signs found above are indeed the two best candidates
for giving foreign trip/residence. Libra's lord Venus is in 9th and more importantly Libra contains
Rahu (significator of foreign residence). Aries is 7th (long trips) and it contains Ketu and 9th and
12th lord Mercury. For foreign residence, 9th and 12th are very important. Clearly, Li and Ar are
the two best candidates and the fact that they happen to be the running antardasa and
pratyantardasa signs on 4th Jan 1995 demonstrates the efficacy of varga Narayana dasas.

We have to see how many of (i) Jupiter, (ii) Mercury and (iii) lord of sign, occupy or aspect the
sign. Ge is aspected by Jupiter and not by Mercury/lord. Count is 1 out of 3. Sg is occupied by
Jupiter and its lord (who is again Jupiter). Sg's count of 2 beats Ge's count of 1. So Sg is
stronger.
? Q2 : Therefore the stronger between Ge/Sg shall initiate the dasa. The answer you gave was
Ar-Ge???? How Aries.

It is in Ar dasa. Ar is stronger with one planet than Li with no planets.Lord of Ar starts

antardasas. Mars is in Sg (an odd sign). So antardasas go as Sg, Cp, Aq, Pi, Ar etc. Ge
antardasa is 7th and it runs during April-Dec 1993 (if you divide 8 years of Ar dasa into 12 equal
parts, each antardasa is 2/3 year or 8 months. Half-point, i.e. start of 7th antardasa, is after 4
years, i.e. in April 1993. April+8 months is Dec).

That's why I said my marriage took place during Ar-Ge.

[Ar is occupied by DK. Ge is owned by DK and occupied by lagna lord Venus.]

Can please anybody remind what is the exact sequence of the dasa sign results: First sign, then
house, and then aspects on it or the other way around - first house, then sign, and then aspects?

If you divide a Narayana dasa into 3 equal parts, the first, second and third parts will give the
results of the sign, its lord and its occupants (respectively).

For example, Rajiv Gandhi (birthdata is given below) ran Cancer's Narayana dasa during Aug
1981-Aug 1992. Cancer is 12th from lagna, 10th from ghati lagna (GL, power & authority) and
3rd from AL. Being an upachaya from AL, it suggests growth of status. Moreover, it is the 10th
from GL. So the first part - which should give the results of Cn - made him India's PM. Second
part - which should give the results of lord Moon - gave good results too. Moon is in Leo and
aspects GL. So he enjoyed power. Third part - which should give the results of occupant Rahu -
saw his fall from power. His party lost in the elections. True to the nature of Rahu, he engaged
in machinations and brought down the V.P. Singh government with the help of Chandrasekhar,
who was happy to split the party in exchange for the PM seat for a few months. Rahu is a
maraka (7th lord in 12th) and he was assissainated in the same one-third.

Narasmha has answered this and I will add the following:-

1. That the period of the sign is to be divided into three parts to understand the trend of the
Narayana Dasa.

2. If the sign is beneficial then the results will be in the first one-third, if malefic then its results
will be in the last one-third. Pisces is the exception where the results will be in the middle
always.

3. The remaining two parts shall be governed by (a) the lord of the sign and (b) the planets
placed in it or if none are placed, then those aspecting it.

4. If the Lord is a Natural malefic, then its results will be felt later than those of the planets in the
sign. Vice-versa if the lord is a benefic.

5. Thus, the natural trend of a dasa sign is to do good in the beginning and evil towards the end.
