plan for Young
Learners
Harry has learned to live with his bullying Uncle
Vernon his callous Aunt Petunia and the constant
whining of his greedy, spoiled cousin Dudley. He's
even learned to live with sleeping in the cupboard
under the stairs.

Harry's relatives have just as reluctantly learned

to live with the unwelcome presence of their
orphaned relation, a constant reminder of
Petunia's wayward sister and brother-in-law and
their mysterious and untimely demise.
Even the impending arrival of his 11th birthday
offers no excitement for Harry - as usual, there's
little chance of cards, presents or any kind of
birthday treat.
This year, however, is different
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone tells the

that he is the orphaned son of two powerful

his own. Invited to attend Hogwarts School of

Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry embarks on the
adventure of a lifetime. At Hogwarts, he finds the
home and the family he has never had.
Students are highly motivated and keen to
come to your classes every time.
Much more language is learned because you
can use class time much more effectively.
Benefits of good behavior management

A reward system encourages competition

with the other teams in the class. Kids love
competition!
Students are encouraged to help each other,
especially students weaker at language acquisition.
Students behave far better, which creates a
wonderful learning environment and lets you relax
and really enjoy your teaching.
Children respond to positive reinforcement.
Telling a child they did well today and giving them
points woks far better than yelling at them!
Your kids will be highly focused throughout
the class and stimulated by the goal orientated
learning.
Far less discipline issues - class time is fun!

Materials needed: One A1 piece of card or paper, name tags for every child in the class,
the Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone DVD, a big, floppy hat (you can make one if
you want I did!), safety pins or tape to attach the name tags.
What to do: The night before the class, make sure to watch
the selected clips so you are comfortable with what the kids
are about to see. It will help you to understand this plan and
leave you well prepared and relaxed for the class!
Go to the shops and buy one large A1 piece of paper or card.
Draw a large table on the card like on the previous page,
except that you should have 20-30 boxes along (otherwise
theyll fill too quickly!)
Print out the house symbols on p.4 and stick them at the left
end of your rows. You will be left with a wonderful points chart
to hang on your classroom wall!
Prepare some name card tags (enough for all the students in
your class). Have an equal number of Gryffindor, Slytherin,
Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff name tags. The students can write
on their own names or you can help them after you have put
the kids into their houses.
Bring in a big, floppy hat which will choose which houses each

child will join (actually it will be you crouching behind the

choosing chair!!
If a child behaves well, does good homework, helps others, etc
you can award their house a point. If a child misbehaves,
doesnt do homework, speaks too much L1, is late for class, etc
you take away a point! The house with the most points at the
end of the term gets sweets or a small present. I do this for all
my YL classes and they go wild (and I have a really well-
behaved, motivated class!) Good luck!
After watching the film clip Which house will she be in??

Gryffindor? Hufflepuff?
Clip One (Start to 4:00mins) The clip introduces Harry as a baby left
on the door step of his mean aunt and uncle. Magic is in the air!

Clip Two (6:00mins to 8:32mins) Harry goes on a trip with his family
to the zoo. His family are really horrid and Harry first realises he has
a little magic when he talks to a snake and puts his nasty step-
brother in the snake pool! Very funny!

Clip Three (10:04mins to 12:20mins) Owls keep appearing outside

the house to deliver a letter to Harry. His nasty step-father keeps
tearing up the letter, so more and more owls start turning up.
Eventually, letters fill the house!

Clip Four (15:50mins to 18:30mins) Harry gets an invitation letter to

Hogsworth School from Hagrid. He learns that his parents were
famous wizards!

Clip Five (24:40mins to 28:47mins) Harry is in a magical shop in

London where he chooses his first magic wand and learns more
about his past! Great watching for children!

Clip Six (31:08mins to 34:20mins) The famous part where Harry

catches the Hogwarts Express from station 9 . The magic of Harry
Potter!

Clip Seven (39:38mins to 46:10mins) The students get off the train
and make their way to Hogsworth School by boats. They get a quick
welcome at then are lead into the Great Hall! The students are then

asked one at a time to sit on a special throne and a talking hat is

placed on their heads. This talking hat then chooses which house each
Hogsworth student will go into. This is the most important clip as this
is what you will do with your class. Your students will never forget
this classgood luck!
