Read "The Other Side of the Portrait" and answer questions 1 to 6.

One day, the Emperor, Krishnadevaraya displayed in the court, his portrait done by an artist. Those
in court praised the painting and the artist. Surprisingly. Tenali Rama remained silent, The Emperor
was puzzled. He asked, "Rama, don't you have anything to say?"

"My Lord, I don't find anything great I about this painting. In fact, it is incomplete. It shows only one
side of your face. The artist doesn't deserve any good word!" remarked Rama.

'Rama, you don't know how to judge a good painting. A painting need not be complete. One has to
imagine a lot to judge the beauty of a painting. It's very easy to find mistakes. Tell me, can you draw
anything like this? I doubt whether you can even hold the brush, leave alone paint any object. Will you
draw something and bring it to me?"

No one saw Rama in the court for some days. One day, he entered with two bodyguards holding a
painting. Everyone was confused to see only the back portion of a horse in the painting. "What is this
Rama? I can see only the tail of a horse," commented the Emperor.

"My Lord, its body is outside the canvas. Didn't you say, one has to imagine a lot to judge the value of
a good painting?" said Rama with a mocking laugh. Krishnadevaraya laughed loudly.

"Rama, none can outwit you," said the Emperor, as he reached for a purse to reward Rama.

Read "Are Plastic Bags Harming the Environment?" and answer questions 8 to 13.

ARE PLASTIC BAGS HARMING THE ENVIRONMENT?

'Paper or plastic?' What should our choice be? The answer is not as easy as it may ill seem.
According to environmentalists, plastic bags and paper bags both have problems.

Plastic bags are everywhere. They can be found in pits, stuck on trees, and floating in the ocean.
What is the effect of all of these bags? Some experts say that they harm the environment. Plastic
bags can take hundreds of years to break down into tiny, soft pieces so that they become a part of
the soil. As they break down, they give out poisonous materials into the water and the soil.

Plastic bags in the ocean can choke wildlife. Endangered sea turtles eat the bags and often choke on
them, probably because the bags look like jellyfish, the main food of many sea turtles.

However, plastic bags do have some good points.

Plastic bags are some of the most reused items around the house. They hold school lunches and
carry just about anything. These uses decrease plastic bag waste.

Plastic bags require less energy to produce than paper bags and cause less air pollution. Plus, plastic
bags give out less waste into the water.

Paper bags do, however, break down more quickly than plastic bags. They also don't choke wildlife.
What, then, should people do?

A possible solution would be to use biodegradable plastic bags. 'Biodegradable' means that the bags
naturally break down, like, for example, a banana peel does when you leave it outside.

Perhaps the simplest solution for now, however, is to pack provisions in reusable bags, such as cloth
bags.

Read "What is Gymnastics?" and answer questions 26 to 31.

What is Gymnastics?

Gymnastics is an enjoyable sport that keeps the body fit. Many girls and boys learn it at
school.
Warming up
Training begins with a 10 to 20 minute warm-up to stretch the muscles. It is important to do a warm-
up, so that the muscles and joints don't get injured.
Gymnasts make beautiful shapes with their bodies. Some shapes, such as 'the dish', are quite easy
to do, while for others like 'the bridge', gymnasts need to practise a lot to perform well.

The Bridge
A gymnast must have strong arms and a flexible back and shoulders to perform this movement. From
this position, an experienced gymnast is able to kick her legs over her head to land back on her feet.

The Dish
Gymnasts develop good stomach and leg muscles with this exercise. The lower back is pressed into
the floor. The shoulders, arms and legs are lifted a few centimetres off the ground.

Box splits
In this shape, the back is straight and the legs are stretched wide to form a straight line. It takes a lot
of practice to make the hips and legs do this.

Forward Roll
Rolling is useful for linking one movement with another. It is best practised on a soft mat. The
gymnast starts in a sitting position with the arms stretched forwards and the back straight.
She then leans forwards and puts her hands on the sides of the head to take the body weight, tucking
in the head.
She gives a push with the feet, rolls forwards, then comes back to a sitting
position.

Word Meaning:
flexible: to be able to bend the body easily without feeling any pain
experienced: having deep knowledge or skill in something
tucking: bending or folding inwards into position
