Government
System of Russia
Russias Government Type
Russias government system is called a federal
semipresidential republic. This means that power is
shared between national and small governments, as
well as the president sharing power with the prime
minister even though he still is more powerful. This
also means that the people of Russia get the
opportunity to vote for representatives in the office.
If one is used to the governing system in America
this is an easy system to understand.
Mr. President
The current president of Russia is Vladimir Putin,
serving with the Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Together they share the governing responsibilities.
The president is elected and can serve a total of two
consecutive terms that are each 6 years. The
president is very involved in the foreign and
domestic policies. The president also has the power
to establish laws without any other approval from
any other branch of government.

Three Branches
Russia is divided into three branches the executive,
legislative, and judicial branches.
Executive
Within the executive branch there is the
government which consists of the Prime Minister,
Prime Minister deputy and the federal ministers.
The President is the one who nominates the Prime
Minister and Parliament. However, the legislative
branch has to approve. Together the members of
this branch help to enforce the laws given by the
President and legislative.
Legislative
The legislative branch is broken into two groups the
State Duma and the Federation Counsel. The State
Duma are the first to receive and approve of new
proposals. The approved proposals then go to the
Federation Counsel where they vote on the
proposals or laws. The Duma also has the power to
overrule a veto that the Federation Counsel has
done.
Judicial
The judicial branch makes sure all laws are being
followed in Russia. The judicial branch is divided into
three courts that handle different issues. The first
court is the general jurisdiction which oversees
criminal and civil cases. The second court is the
arbitration court which handle property and
commercial disputes. Lastly, the constitutional court
interprets laws and over turn any they feel are
unconstitutional.
