Language Development Plan

In the Dual language classroom, there are varieties of students from different

culture. Students in the class either speak English, Spanish or both. Couple of students in

the class has the English language as their second language. Students that speak Spanish

communicate in Spanish with other students when given a chance. In the classroom

students are encouraged to speak in English throughout the time to build upon their

English language skill. It is important educators to maintain community-building

relationship with the students.

In my classroom I have 5 Hispanic students, 2 are females and 3 are males. 1 male

name Danny is born and raised in US his level of English proficiency is advanced high.

The other 2 males are from outside of US and the level of English proficiency is advance

these two students require minimum support. The two Hispanic female students are born

and raised in US and those two girls have the basic knowledge of English and are at high

advanced level of English proficiency. Through opportunities these students can improve

in the English language and do well.

Rests of the students in the class are Americans and only speak English language

and learning Spanish. These students are placed in a dual classroom setting in which the

students learn English and Spanish. Teaching the content in Spanish and English rotates.

One week the lesson will be taught in complete English and the next week will be

completely in Spanish and it rotates like that.

Johnson Elementary School has a population of 47% white students, 42%

Hispanics, black 6%, Asian 1% and American Indian/ Alaska Native 1%. Mainly this

school consists of Hispanics and whites. This classroom is a dual language program in
which the students are taught the English language and Spanish. In this class all the

students speak English and Spanish.

How will you handle language errors?

To maintain positive language learning environment, I would implement building

a community of partnership. The students will work in groups with one another to

support each other. Generally, students that are learning the English language will make

mistakes in the language orally and with written expression. Through practice students

may improve in the English language. To help students learn from their mistakes I would

apply the interactionist theory. Through this theory the students would interact with

English speaking students and with the teacher to improve in their errors.

Will you have a classroom routine/procedure/policy to address errors?

I will be maintaining classroom management in my classroom. There will

procedures and rules in the classroom. Students will interact with one another to complete

their assigned job. In the Dual language class I had observed the teacher that if a student

was absent for the day then she would ask the students that if someone would like to take

the responsibility of that student so that they dont lose points.

Consider the routines and procedures in your classroom.

To build a community with leaders every morning I would welcome the students

with a good morning shake. To improve communications with one another affirmation

circle is also great. Students in the morning would get in a circle and quietly sit down till

the teacher gives instruction then the students would share their thoughts. Five students a

day will get to share, but each student will be given a chance.

Consider the physical organization of your classroom.

My classroom will be set up in way that interactions are happening throughout the class.

There are five tables and in each table there is a group of 3 or 4 students. The students

would work together to solve any problem. I have placed English- speaking students with

non-English speaking students so that they can learn from each other. It is important for

students to interact with each other so that they can learn from one another. As a teacher,

implementing stations works in groups also supports interactions.

How will you plan for classroom management that builds community?

Social integration: students are placed in groups and this way the students work together.

Also, each week, I would switch up students group so that by the end of the year the

students have the gotten the chance to speak with all the individuals in the class. It is

believed that communication leads to acquisition. The draw back would be that

understanding might take some time and negotiation for meaning due to

misunderstanding.

Projects are a way to group the students. Multiple projects builds on students

engagement. To keep the class interactive I would do weekly show and tell activity to

learn something different. Students would learn from their own work and listening to

other peoples facts. I would have stations in the classroom to build on communications,

word walls and posters with helpful information around the classroom.

In the classroom I have five tables and each table there is a group of 3 to 4 students. At

each table there are English-speaking students with non-English speaking students. In the

classroom I have computers as one of the stations for students to work on. Computers are

way to engage the students in learning and implement technology in classroom. I will be
using class dojo as classroom management to give rewards for following directions.

Through this app, the students will earn points and they may use their points for rewards

at any time. I have a half round table to work with ELL students to assess them weekly

of how much they are learning. There is also a bulletin board that will have posters in

Spanish and English to support those ELLs.

Implementing activities that are related to the subject of Math, Science and social

studies is not difficult. Providing a story to each concept would help the ELLs in the class

to learn better and improve in the English language. Through the story the students would

be able to connect with and draw interest. Another activity is the use of word wall,

through word wall the students can look into if they would be struggling with words.

Completing a research over a topic would benefit students in reading and writing

development. Researching may sound too much effort for the students, but it could be
done in basic format where the students would gather information based the questions

asked by the teacher. These three ways are great to support ELL students in reading and

writing skills for subject areas.

How will you become a cultural mediator?

Building on diversity in classroom is essential. Having students work together and

sharing their culture would keep an open mind for the students. It is important to learn

about different cultures and have acceptance towards it. As a educator, students need to

cooperate with each other, and background should not matter. An example is having a

show and tell day about different cultures would bring in interactions and engagements.

Through show and tell the students will learn different facts from each culture and the

ELLs would feel confident in talking about their culture to other students. It is important

to see the passion in students about their culture and the passion of learning would help

the ELL students to improve in the English language.

How will you connect to the homes/families of your students?

As a teacher, I would invite my students parents to the classroom for open house

nights. Parents would learn about different types of works their students does and how

they progress throughout the school years. It is important to have an effective

collaboration amongst parents. As a future educator, actively involving parents in their

childs life is necessary; therefore maintaining an effective collaboration is important.

Listening to the students and families is key because it important for them to know that

they are valued, and it is important for both to collaborate with each other.

How can your campus support the education of ELLs?

The schools can provide events to support the education of ELLs. An example is,

brining in technologies in classroom to support ELLs to meet their needs as required. The

school can bring events and much more to provide benefits of education for ELLs.

Another way to support ELLs education is keeping event for parents and teacher to

collaborate with one another. Parents are a support system to their child; they should

always encourage students to pursue what they wish for, but never force their opinions on

their children. It is important to have collaboration in meetings for the betterment of the

students.

How can the community support the education of ELLs?

Community services experiences are great way to provide knowledge to the

ELLs. Examples of community services are After-school tutoring, Student internships,

Medical services, Social services, Clothing/food drive, ESL classes for adults, Continuing

education programs etc. through these services ELLs would be able to understand and

learn from the community works. This would help the students be involved in the

community and build in positive relationship with others.

What are you doing or going to do in the classroom to tap into your students Funds

of Knowledge.

Students would need to gain knowledge from their family and cultural

backgrounds, to make classrooms more inclusive. It is important to involve different

cultures into the lesson. As a future educator, I would have students complete projects

that would involve In their background history. Through this type of research the students

would be more aware of their family background and will be able to explain to others

about their culture history.

What are your teacher tools to promote oral language development in your

classroom?

I would have collaborative interactions with peers

Purposeful and authentic lesson plans,

Restating students comments

Asking questions for comprehension check

Explanatory devices

Wait time

Clear speech

Questions and responses (discussions)

Cognitive empathy

Provide reasons for learning

How will you use these tools to scaffold your ELL students?

Collaborative interactions: think-pair-share, show and tell etc.

Purposeful and authentic: objects, props, visuals etc.

Asking questions for comprehension: student friendly questions,

exit/admit slips etc.

Explanatory devices: role-plays, visual and graphic organizers, props etc.

Wait time: restate question if needed, allow students to think then

answer, think-pair-share is also a great way to implement wait time

Clear speech: Enunciate, use gestures and visuals, repetition etc.

Questions and responses: provide student friendly questions and involve in

discussions.

Cognitive empathy: know the topic; bring out the passion, Frequently

check for understanding etc.

Reasons for learning: connect to future and present.

All of these method/ strategies listed are to use for ELL students because their learning

will be valued. Students will understand concepts and practice in daily life. Students will

also be able to build positive rapport with other students. These tools are effective

strategies to apply on ELL students.

Types of Assessments

Non-verbal assessments:

students will be assessed weekly. This assessment is helpful for students that are

shy or arent as proficient in English, using non-verbal assessments is a great way to see a

students academic progress. Through this type of assessment the students will be able to

express their thoughts without the feeling of being judged and possibly passionately

express how much they know about a topic.

-Students would act out any role-plays

-Vocabulary words

-Summarizing texts by miming it

-Pictures: to draw or collect pictures to show their knowledge on a topic.

-Written expression

Oral presentations or performances:

Many students go through test anxiety and this is great way for students to be

assessed.

-Role-plays: this can be used to assess students individually or as a group. Some

ideas include having students write a play and performing it or even having the

students teach the teacher as part of a review class.

-Interviews: This type of assessment is very helpful if you have students that are

early English learners. To help test students on content knowledge, try to use a lot

of visual cues. For example, have students pick from a pile of pictures, and ask

questions to elicit responses from them. You can assess the student based on

vocabulary used or comparing concepts.

-Describing/explaining/retelling/paraphrasing/summarizing texts: Instead of a

written book report or summary of a piece of text, you can have your students

retell the plot in front of the class or just to you. Other ideas can include asking

the students to pick a character in the book and tell a story from their point of

view, or even to describe their favorite part of the text.

Written assessments:

Students will be able to show their understanding of the content through writing

works. This also applies to students that are afraid to show their understanding orally they

may have it in written form.

-Editing writing: Give students a piece of text with grammatical mistakes and ask

them to correct it, to test their knowledge of grammar.

-Content information: Have students write down facts they learned about a text

and anything that may be confusing for them. This is helpful to see if there are
concepts that may need to be reviewed particularly if many students are not

understanding then it may need to be re-teach.

-Creative and structured writing assignments: Ask students to write a creative

story, or even give them a writing prompt. Students would write their information

with a given prompt.
