Dear Client:

In compliance with the fulfillment of the requirements regarding the subject of the structural design
project, the proponents would like to present the design proposal entitled Law Library, in accordance
with your instructions.

The main purpose of the document is to propose the accomplished final design of the structural steel
framing for a 4-story office building located in Charlotte, North Carolina. We will include the framing
rationale and the finalized design proposal as was per your discretion.

The only recommendation that we would like to make deals with the location of the wind bracing; due to
the intuitions of the geotechnical engineer that we collaborated with, we decided to move the wind
bracing to the exterior of the building. In addition, we were under the impression that we would be dealing
with seismic design; therefore, we did not want to incorporate everything into the core of the building due
to this area being a highly loaded area. These assumptions would allow us to avoid having a foundation
that would be too large. Our reasoning endorsed us to infer that we should move the East-West wind
bracing to a specific location that happens to fall in front of a window. We recommend that you
incorporate the use of a decorative facade to illuminate a creative design.

We hope that this proposal will meet your approval.

Very truly yours,

Team ISIS

PRELIMINARY ENGINEERING REPORT
LAW LIBRARY

The Law Library project is a new law office building located in central North Carolina. The frame for the
building is a standard steel structure with wind-bracing frames for lateral support. The structure sits on top
of concrete footings and also uses a composite floor system for higher efficiency.

The structure was designed with the following conditions:

A wind velocity in central North Carolina of up to 90mph. The wind pressure controlled the design
over seismic lateral acceleration. The structure was treated as a fully-enclosed building allowing
for a simple analysis of the wind loads as specified in ASCE section 7-05.
The live loads used in the design were taken from the 2012 North Carolina Building Code.
The roof system is composed of an adhered single-ply roofing membrane, rigid insulation material
with an R-Value in compliance with the 2012 NC Energy Conservation Code. Nucor Vulcraft Type
1.5B, 22 gage roof-deck supported by Vulcraft K-series open-web steel joists.
The roof-ceiling assembly is designed for a 1-hr fire-rating.

The materials to be used in construction are listed below:

Steel members shall be ASTM:

o A992 for rolled W-Shapes.
o A500 Grade B for hollow sections.
Reinforcing steel shall be ASTM A615 Grade 60.
All bolts shall be ASTM A325.
Concrete used in the composite deck and footings shall have a compressive strength of 4000psi.
Concrete floors shall consist of light-weight concrete while footings shall be normal-weight
concrete.

ISIS Engineering performed an analysis of the expected loads in order to size the steel bays in the
structure. Each of the bays was considered to contribute 25% of its loading to an adjacent column. Using
this method the total loads transferred to the ground were determined. This information was given to our
Geotechnical engineer who did a soil analysis of the site in order to report the bearing pressure of the soil.
ISIS used this information to determine the concrete footing sizes.

Based on our initial analysis of loads we were able to size the steel members for our beams and girders, as
well as design all connections. Vulcraft roof joists and deck were chosen based on the roof loads.

The final 24144 square-feet design includes 133 tons of steel. The average weight-per-area of the structure
is about 11 pounds-per-square-foot.

CE 420: Structural Engineering Project

Fall 2012

CAPSTONE DESIGN PROJECT:

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE

DESIGN OF THE STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING FOR A 4-STORY OFFICE
BUILDING MODELED ON AN ACTUAL STRUCTURE
(Issued: August 23, 2012)
(Revised Aug. 8/27/12)

INTRODUCTION

The culminating project in CE 420 (Structural Engineering Project), the capstone design course
in the structural engineering program, will be based on the general specifications contained in
this document, and the accompanying architectural drawings. Each student team is required to
design the structural steel framing for a four-story office building that is described below and
modeled upon an actual office building that was designed and built recently. At the end of the
semester, the results of each teams work will be documented in a formal report, complete with
an Executive Summary, a detailed description of the design approach, all design calculations,
and a set of near professional-quality engineering drawings (with appropriate specifications).
The drawings will include the structural framing drawings (roof, typical floor, elevations, etc.),
typical connection designs, and typical footing designs. More details on the final project
submittal will be given in class as the project proceeds. Finally, each team will make an oral
presentation before a Design Review Board, during which the teams report is described. The
Board will consist of at least the following members: the practicing structural engineer who
originally designed the structure; one or more faculty members; the teaching assistant, Mr.
Andrew Edwards; and the course instructor, Mr. Irving Nazario. The oral presentations will take
place during the last week of classes.

GENERAL PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The project will involve the design of the structural steel framing, typical bolted and/or welded
connections, and one or more typical reinforced concrete footings for a four-story office
building. The accompanying four drawings provided by the project architect contain floor plans
for each of the floors, and center-to-center spacing for the corner columns. Conceptually, the
project can be broken down into these major parts:

1. Initial analysis of general project specifications and drawings to determine basic data
required for design calculations:
a. Dead and live roof and floor loadings, allowable soil pressure, and design wind speed,
consistent with the 2012 NC Building Code (2009 IBC) and good engineering
practice;

vi
CE 420: Fall 2012 Capstone Design Project General Specifications (Revised 8/27/12) Page 2 of 4

b. Investigation of case histories of actual buildings to determine candidates for a viable

framing scheme, including the requisite lateral-load bracing.

2. Design of all structural shapes for gravity and lateral loads (wind and seismic), i.e., open-
web roof joists, W-shape roof beams (girders), composite floor beams (fillers), composite
floor girders, gravity columns, and bracing;

3. Design of typical bolted and/or welded connections;

4. Design of one or more typical reinforced concrete footings;

5. Development of appropriate, professional-quality, CAD drawings;

6. Formal Project Design Report with Executive Summary, a detailed description of the design
process, and all design calculations. Again, more details on the final project submittal
requirements will be given in class as the project proceeds.

BASIC DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS

Each team shall base their design on the following basic assumptions:

1. The project architect requires that the overall height of the structure shall not exceed 60 feet,
due to local zoning restrictions (the measurement points for this restriction will be described
by the instructor in class);

2. The minimum finished-floor-to-finished-ceiling dimension shall be 10-00 on all floors;

3. The occupied tenant space is to be configured as an open office scheme for Floors 1, 2
and 3, requiring a floor plan as open and as unobstructed as is reasonably possible. Floor 4
is to be partially a law library (Live-Load floor loading=150 psf), in addition to general
office space. These occupancies will have an impact on the bay size and the location of
wind bracing;

4. The project MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) engineer has specified that the
minimum clearance between the top of the hung ceiling panels and the underside of the steel
framing shall be 1-10, to allow for the installation of electrical, communications, fire
safety, HVAC and plumbing systems;

5. The roof system shall be composed of an adhered single-ply roofing membrane, rigid
insulation material with an R-Value in compliance with the 2012 NC Energy Conservation
Code (2 in. minimum thickness), Nucor Corporation (Vulcraft) Type 1.5B, 22 gage, roof
deck with a Factory Mutual-approved maximum span of 6-0 supported by Vulcraft K-
Series open-web steel joists. The corresponding roof-ceiling assembly shall be 1-hr. fire-
rated, restrained, with exposed-grid ceiling tiles forming the protection membrane. The
corresponding UL Design Number is similar to P211 (http://database.ul.com/cgi-
bin/XYV/cgifind.new/LISEXT/1FRAME/srchres.html?collection=/data3/verity_collections/
lisext&vdkhome=/data3/verity_sw_rev24/common&SORT_BY=textlines:asc,ccnshorttitle:a
sc&query=P2*+<IN>File_Number+and+BXUV<IN>CCN);
vii
CE 420: Fall 2012 Capstone Design Project General Specifications (Revised 8/27/12) Page 3 of 4

6. The floor-to-ceiling assembly shall consist of 6.25 lightweight concrete over 20 gage, 2
deep composite steel deck (Vulcraft 2VLI 20), supported by composite W-shape filler
beams and composite W-shape girders. The maximum filler beam spacing is 10-2,
consistent with construction loading requirements and a 1 hr. UL fire-rated assembly similar
to Design Number D219 (http://database.ul.com/cgi-
bin/XYV/cgifind.new/LISEXT/1FRAME/srchres.html?collection=/data3/verity_collections/
lisext&vdkhome=/data3/verity_sw_rev24/common&SORT_BY=textlines:asc,ccnshorttitle:a
sc&query=D2*+<IN>File_Number+and+BXUV<IN>CCN).

7. Finished floor is pad/carpet in office areas, and ceramic tile in public areas (such as
restrooms and elevator lobbies);

8. The owner and architect have specified that no floor live-load reductions are to be permitted,
as allowed in Sec. 1607 of the 2012 NC Building Code (IBC 2009). While this will result in
a somewhat heavier structure than required, it will allow for a variety of tenants in the
future, without the need for expensive structural strengthening. For example, the loading
imposed by increased future storage requirements may exceed the minimum code-specified
live load of 50 psf for offices. If this live load is further reduced, as permitted in Sec.
1607.9, some structural members may be undersized. Thus, many structural engineers do
not take full advantage of live-load reductions (an example of how good engineering
practice mandates that the minimum legal requirement, as specified by the building code, be
exceeded);

9. The basic wind speed is 100 mph (3-second gust). Because the structure is located in a
suburban office park with relatively flat open parking areas all around, assume Wind
Exposure Category C, and because it is ordinary office occupancy, the Wind Importance
Factor is 1.0;

10. The structure is historically in a zone of low seismic activity (so wind usually controls over
seismic). Nevertheless, each design team must undertake a seismic analysis, as required by
the NC Building Code;

11. Assume that all lateral resistance shall be provided by braced frames only (no rigid frames);

12. The chiller plant for the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) system for the
entire building shall be housed in a separate, low-profile structure near the main building,
and is not part of this design project;

13. Hydraulic elevators shall be installed in the structure; as a consequence, there is no

penthouse atop this structure housing elevator hoisting machinery;

14. The faade of the building is to be composed of manufactured panels whose weight shall be
completely supported on a strip footing separate from the steel framing and foundation;

15. The structural steel to be specified shall be:

a. For rolled W-shapes, ASTM A992;
b. For rolled channels (C-shapes), angles (L shapes), and flat plates, ASTM A36;
c. For rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS), ASTM A500 Grade B
CE 420: Fall 2012 Capstone Design Project General Specifications (Revised 8/27/12) Page 4 of 4

16. Reinforcing steel shall be ASTM A615 Grade 60 with a minimum specified yield strength
of
60 ksi;

17. All bolts shall be ASTM A325;

18. All weld electrodes shall be E70XX;

19. All footing and floor designs shall be based on concrete with a compressive strength of
4000 psi;

20. All floors shall consist of lightweight concrete (110 pcf), while all footings shall consist
of normal-weight concrete (150 pcf).

IMPORTANT NOTE

As the semester progresses, some of the information presented in this document may change,
at the discretion of the instructor.

Gravity System
The design loads on the structure shall be taken as the following values.

Roof Framing
The dead load on the roof is determined by adding up the following:

1 psf Membrane
2 psf Steel Deck
3 psf Insulation
2 psf Joists and Bridging
4 psf Mechanical Systems
4 psf Electrical Systems
4 psf Miscellaneous
2 psf Track and Ceiling

TOTAL = 22 psf Taken as 25 psf to be conservative.

The live load is determined from the 2012 North Carolina Building Code Table 1607.1. The 20 psf
uniform loading for All other construction was chosen.

Floor Framing
The dead load for the floor is determined by adding up the following:

4 psf Mechanical Systems

4 psf Electrical Systems
52 psf Composite Floor Weight
8 psf Typical Bay Weight

TOTAL = 68 psf

The live load is determined using the 2012 North Carolina Building Code section 1607. The different
areas of the structure resulted in four different live load cases. Relevant cases are listed below:

150 psf Law Library, Book Stacks

100 psf Fire Escape/Stairs
65 psf Office Plus Partitions
80 psf Corridors Above First Floor
