One of the most beloved Eucharistic texts in the Catholic tradition is without doubt O Sacrum
o pl

Convivium. This text was written by Saint Thomas Aquinas on the occasion of the establishment
of the feast of Corpus Domini. The doctrine of the Eucharist, which was at an important moment
-D m

of its definition at the time, is condensed in this brief but deeply intense text. The musical setting
aims to give importance to the deep spiritual feelings that pervade the Latin text. The words are
set in music with no other intention than to illuminate the theology behind the text; and from the
a

theology, the mystic.

Performance Notes
It is not a romantic piece. The expression, which has to be intense, has to be spiritual, not sensual.
An awareness of the meaning of the text and possibly the theological concepts behind the words can
be helpful for a good interpretation. The beat must to be flexible and follow the stress of the words.
After the pppp in passionis eius, the expression becomes livelier again in Mens impletur gratia.
If performed in liturgical ceremonies during the season of Lent, do not sing the text Alleluia.
Instead, sing the alternative text in the last bars.
