The meeting that was attended was the Patient Throughput Committee meeting which
was held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center. The
purpose of this meeting was to look at the data that is collected daily such as throughput times,
volumes, census, acuity, incomplete care, and staffing barriers. The information is used to
compare trends and work on improving the care of patients and the overall work amongst staff
members. Some topics that were discussed included concerns from Environmental Services and
isolation status not updated for them to know through ConnectCare, there were also safety
concerns such as patients antibiotics were changed without checking with consultants, and a big
topic that was discussed at the meeting was discharge timing had a rapid increase due to MD
care coordination, transport times, and RNs not taking patients out of the EMR board.
nurses, physicians, and management (Marquis & Huston, 2015). This professional meeting
included an emergency room physician, hospitalist, nurse managers, nurse supervisors, EVS, and
a quality coordinator. This allowed for decision making, and professional communication
amongst different levels of the organization. This meeting included a lot of nurses and per
Marquis and Huston (2005) this type of structure empowers decision makers, and this
empowerment is directed to increasing nurses authority and control over nursing practice. The
nurses had a lot of suggestions in regards to the business aspect of the organization. They dealt
with situations first hand and could provide feedback on what changes should be made and how
they should be made such as keeping the patient updated on the plan of care. When patients are
seen by the physician and are told they are being discharged, the patient does not know the exact
tine. The nurses at the meeting thought of different ideas to make sure the patient is updated on

their discharge such as including placards in their room with information on discharge process,
or seeing if physicians can have a script that they can read to the patient so that all information is
accurate across the continuum. Nurses feedback was very important in the meeting since they are
This meeting also displayed the importance of advocacy, not only for the patient, but for
the staff members and the hospital organization as well. The members discussed the importance
of making sure that all diagnosis is coded correctly such as heart failure, COPD, and pneumonia.
They expressed the importance of this because they wanted to make sure that either Medicaid or
Medicare would pay their portion first and then the rest of it goes to the patient. It is also
important for physician reimbursement and the coding to support it are critically to the
sustained health of any physicians practice (Beck & Morgolin, 2007). They also spoke on the
importance that if the patient is diagnosed with one thing and they come back and in their chart,
it was supposed to be coded as something different that could cause issues in the treatment for
the patient.
Quality improvement was a big part of discussion in the meeting. This is where a lot of
feedback from the physician was expressed and changes that need to be done immediately. This
was all about improving the process and outcomes and promoting safety and a caring culture.
Discharge process was discussed because of transport is not available for a patient, the patient
does not understand the discharge information that they are going home with, or the timeframe of
the physician to discharge them. There were different ways in which it was suggested on how to
revamp the process. One individual suggested that if patients are discharged they should not have
to wait in a room for their transportation. There should be an area where patients go to wait, but
that immediately turned into the negative feedback that was given when there was a trial for that.

This meeting had a lot of communication amongst the members and there was not one person
who did not provide feedback, which indicated communication is key with process improvement
Professional nurse meetings allow nurses to stay current on what is going on in the health
care field. They are are critical for generating the energy, flow of ideas, and proactive work
needed to maintain a healthy profession that advocates for the needs of its clients and nurses
(Matthews, 2012). It allows the nurse to feel confident in what he or she is doing by staying
current. Having meetings like the Patient Throughput meeting, allows for different areas of
specialty within the hospital to come together to determine how can things be improved. For
nurses, it also helps with networking so that they can meet different people and understand other
areas. Being a part of a committee like the one that was attended allows for more respect. If a
nurse was to present an idea alone, it probably would not get as much recognition as it would if
he or she was part of an organization that could assist them in process. There are advantages to
professional nurse meetings that helps the overall structure of the organization.
Reflection. This meeting really allowed me to see how much involvement nurses have
within an organization and how important they are to the organization. The nurses had a lot of
feedback for what they felt needed to change because of what they do and see on a regular basis.
What I appreciated the most was the doctor taking in the suggestions and determining a way to
have those changes come about. I think it is important for nurses to be involved in their
organization or community because they are the individuals who patients see on a regular basis.
They are the ones who know majority of what is going on around them and what could make the
process a better one. I have learned that I should be involved in what is going on in my

organization and my community. From this meeting, I know that my voice will be heard and I
