Description of Lesson: Students will identify community helpers in our community. They
will be able to describe the role and importance of these community helpers.

Lesson Title or Essential Question: Who are our Community Helpers?

SC Curriculum Standard(s): Standard 1-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how
individuals, families, and communities live and work together in America and around the world.

SC Academic Indicator(s): 1-4.1 Illustrate different elements of community life, including typical jobs;
the interdependence of family, school, and the community; and the common methods of
transportation and communication.

Objectives:
Before:
Pictures of workers will be
displayed on the board. They will
flip their YES/NO cards to
determine their answers. A rubric
with a scale form 1-3 will be used to
grade. They will receive a 3 for
answering all questions right, a 2
for missing one, and a 1 for missing
2 or more questions.

During: Students will come up to

the smartboard to place the correct
worker that belongs in the city.
They will receive a check if it is right
or an X if it is wrong.

 After: Students will cut, sort and
paste tools to match the community
worker. They will receive a 3 for
getting them all right, a 2 for
missing two or more, and a 1 for
missing 3 or more.

Materials/Resources: Smartboard EXCHANGE, notecards, pencils, Match the tools to the Community
Helper worksheet.

Procedures
1. Students will be at their seats. Inform the class
that today we will be learning about community
helpers.
2. Ask the students to raise their hands if they can
define a community helper.
3. Explain that community helpers are those who
assist in our well-being and health in the
community.
Differentiation
Directions will be simplified for low
performing students throughout
lesson. These students will also be
partnered with a high achieving
student as needed.
High performing students will be
asked to name or explain more than
one way that their preferred
community worker can help out in
the community.

4. Direct students to classroom carpet to go over the

Community Helper PowerPoint.
5. Review complete PowerPoint.
6. Have students return to their desks.
7. Explain to students that they will now cut, sort and
paste the different tools to match the community
helper.
8. Have students write on the back one community
helper they would like to be one day.
